This psalm is known as an individual lament, whose primary function is to lay a troubled situation before the Lord, asking him for help.

This is the first instance of a psalm with prayers for the personal downfall of enemies. It is an honest call for help that expresses urgency and expectation. The psalmist praises God for loving what is right and hating what is evil. He recognizes that it is only because of the abundant and steadfast love of God that we can have a relationship with Him.

The warning to evildoers in this psalm would serve also as a warning to the singers of a potential judgment to come if they followed a similar path, but faithful believers can sing for joy as the Lord “spreads his protection” over his children.

Psalm 5

Lead Me in Your Righteousness
To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.

1 Give ear to my words, O Lord;
    consider my groaning.
Give attention to the sound of my cry,
    my King and my God,
    for to you do I pray.
O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
    in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
    evil may not dwell with you.
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
    you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
    the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in the fear of you.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies;
    make your way straight before me.

For there is no truth in their mouth;
    their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
    they flatter with their tongue.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
    let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
    for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
    you cover him with favor as with a shield.

Prayer:

Father,

I am desperately crying out to you. Please hear my prayer.

I know you are not a god that delights in wickedness. Your character is holy, righteous and just. Help me to allow you to deal with those that might do me harm.

Thank you, Lord, that because of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, I have direct access to you.

Lead me in your righteousness and make my choices obvious. Help me to rejoice in your presence and protection even if I don’t feel like rejoicing.

May the joy of my salvation be contagious and a witness for you!

Amen.

  19. Lord you said as I draw nigh to you, you draw nigh to me. I thank you Lord for these precious moments of prayer where I feel you all around me and you invite in the throne room to worship you. Thank you in this place you hear my prayer. Lord I ask for protection for those who are on the front line today doing the work of the Lord. Father protect them shield them from harm and place in them peace that surpasses understanding and fill with great joy that only you can. As we are in prayer forgive you people foe our mistake, let us turn for our ways that are not pleasing to you as we repent. Lastly, father heal our land as only you can.

    In your name I pray. Amen!

    1. Amen! Protect our frontline workers with the shield you give each of us from Ps 5.

  20. Lord I lift up my students today. Specifically the one student who is defeated without hope. The student who has just lost her relationship and been hurt by the pain of loss. I pray you give me wisdom as I work with her today. Lord let the holy spirit work in me to give her mercy as well as help her to build hope in her future. Lord I confess my patience is gone, but this scripture today has convicted me that I must be merciful – as you are merciful. I must show her grace – as you have shown me grace. I must share your love and hope as I professionally help her.

    I lift this prayer for all the teachers today – as well as the parents who are struggling to teach their children. Teaching is a privilege Lord. Thank you for calling me to this frontline.

  21. Thank You, Lord, for this day and for this time to focus on Your Word and to be reminded of Your faithfulness and love for us in all circumstances. Forgive us, Father, when we forget that the Lord of Creation is walking beside us in this journey. May we strive to let others see Jesus in us in what we do and say. In the midst of this storm that isn’t yet over, we thank you for how far we’ve come. We know that one day…….one day there will be a rainbow. Amen.

  22. Father,

  25. Verse 7
    But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house.
    I will bow down toward your holy temple..

    Rejoicing in the steadfast love of the Lord. It’s only because of that love, we can approach Him and worship Him.

  26. V.8 Lead me in your righteousness
    v12 For You bless the righteous

    My prayer is that when I’m in trouble, that the Lord will lead me in His righteousness and yield to His will. Every battle I fight with God as my captain will always lead to victory. Thank you Lord for the blessed assurance of hope that only comes from you.

  27. Praise God His word is true and when we pray the scripture He must answer because He doesn’t lie. Praise God for answered prayers.

  28. Lord, help me to always trust in your love and in nothing else. I do not want to engage in any wickedness or evil because it cannot dwell with you! Help me rejoice and sing always because I take refuge in You!

  29. Lord, I know that You have not given me a spirit of fear, so I reject that and instead claim the power, love and sound mind You have for me. Help me to know Your WORD so well that I will reject fear the moment it enters my mind and soul. I pray for the frontliners for wisdom, strength, perseverance and patience . And keep them safe always. I pray in the mighty Name of our Savior JESUS CHRIST. AMEN.

  30. Heavenly Father, I praise You and glorify Your name. Father, You are my Lord and Savior. Thank you, Father. I come to you today and pray for the enemies of my children and my enemies. Only you Father know what is happening in our enemies lifes and I believe it must not be good if they have hate in their hearts. Father, take control and counsel them with ministering angles. Surround them with love and understanding that their hearts of hate will turn into hearts seeking Your love. I pray for opportunities to arise that we may express our love for You and pray the salvation prayer with our enemies. I ask for a hedge of protection over my family that when others look upon us they see You and not us. In Jesus Name, Amen!

  31. Thanking the Lord for all the times I can now see that he protected me from disaster, even when I was rebelling against Him. Yes, He let me experience the consequences of many of my bad decisions, but other times He showed me great mercy and grace. His timing and judgement are always perfect.

  32. But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy,
    and spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may exult in you.

    Oh Jesus, I will take refuge in you and my heart will forever sing for joy! You are my strength, my peace, my help in troubling times! I exult in you and love your name!

  33. Father, we are to rejoice always and give thanks in all things. You tell us not to be anxious about anything. Sometimes I do get anxious, but I know I can trust you and when I get that uneasy feeling, I can call on you and You give me strength to be content, and the pease of Holy God will guard my heart and mind in Jesus Christ.
    Amen

  34. ” Lead me Lord,
    Lead me in thy righteousness,
    make thy way straight before my face.
    For it is thou Lord, thou Lord only, that makest me dwell in safety!!”

  35. Psalm 5:8
    Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of [fill-in-the-blank];
    make your way straight before me.

    David filled in the blank with “my enemies”. He had troubles and concerns but, still, his desire was for the Lord’s righteousness. He desired the Lord to make his way straight BECAUSE of his enemies. Many of us have troubles and concerns, in the center of which might be our “enemy”, COVID-19. My prayer today is that God would use my concerns to make my way straight. My husband and I have been routinely walking in our neighborhood and twice now in recent days, the Lord has prompted me to ask if we can pray for them. Yes, right there on the sidewalk! One neighbor we already knew, the other we did not know but both were eager to be prayed over. I believe that God is eager to welcome His children into the kind of spontaneous prayer that Stephen mentioned in Sunday’s sermon.

  36. Thank you Lord that you cover us with your shield of favor! I am safe in my Father’s arms! I can take refuge in you my Lord & be glad & sing praises of joy because of you!

  37. I loved the verse n.3. “ … in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch…”
    always I‘ll wait for you, my Lord, I’ll wait for you answer, for you hands with help for me and my family. You always respond…I’ll just WATCH you glory.
    Thanks my God!!

  38. “Make my choices obvious” – AMEN! I wish to perceive clearly your will, Father.

  39. Thank you Father that you hear our cries and our prayers. That we have a father that listens! I am thankful that we have direct access and can come into His house through His steadfast love and not by anything that we have earned.
    Thank you that we can take refuge in you and we will be covered by your protection and shield! What a comforting thought in this time!

  40. Thank you Lord for the reminder of the protection You offer. We pray for protection for our entire family. These are difficult times Lord and how grateful we are that You are our refuge. In Jesus’ powerful Name we pray!
    Amen
