Peter closes out his second letter by encouraging the believers to remember what the prophets had foretold long ago, and what the Lord had promised through the apostles about the last days.  He exhorts them to not grow weary when scoffers call into question the coming of the Lord.  Christians must keep in mind that the Lord is patient and desires for all people to repent.  But Peter also reminds believers that, just as the Lord spoke the world into existence by his word, he will one day bring time to an end in the same way.

2 Peter 3

The Day of the Lord Will Come

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Final Words

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Reflection:

  • How does Peter describe when the heavens and earth pass away?
  • How should God’s people live in these last days?
  • Are you grateful for God’s patience?

Prayer: Thank you Lord for your promises and faithfulness.  Thank you for your patience towards us. Keep us faithful in these last days as we patiently await your appearing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Father,

Good morning LORD. Thank you for another day.

Help me, Father, to erase me today. Shine through me into this dark and dying world. Only you give light. Shine on those who are hurting. Encourage the downtrodden.

Help us to not lose hope. As the sun comes up this morning, remind us that everything will be O.K. in your timing.

Thank you for saving my soul for all eternity. I lift up the wanders in my life. Whisper into their ears that you love them. Open their eyes to see your power and glory. May they open their hearts to receive you this day.

Forgive me Father when I fail you. Help me to overcome the evil one.

Take my life for you good this day. I surrender all.

In Jesus precious holy name, I pray,

    1. Ms. Vickie, I joined the Saints to lift you and your family up in prayer this morning. One song we sing says “Though the sadness may last for the night, His joy comes in the morning”. I pray this morning that the joy of the Lord will renew your strength, that His peace that surpasses all understanding will surround you and your family within this time, that the Lord will guide both your family, the medical people and everyone involved with decisions regarding your husband’s health with His wisdom, I pray that both your body and soul will rest on His promise as you go through this season, I pray that the Lord will remove the spirit of fear, confusion, anger, doubt; and continue to bless you with His sound mind. In Jesus saving and healing name I pray??.

  7. Since Christ is coming again, you want HIM to find us holy. Pray that the lost will come to repentance- this is the greatest prayer for the lost.
