For the next 15 days we will be reading through the Psalms of Ascent together as a church! The Psalms of Ascent are a collection of 15 psalms (Psalms 120-134) that pilgrims would sing on their way up to Jerusalem to worship. These songs are meant to instruct and prepare the hearts of the traveler to worship the Lord! As sojourners and aliens in this world, we too need to have our hearts prepared for and instructed in the worship of our God. Let’s meditate on these psalms and allow the Spirit of the Lord to move us to true worship as we seek Him together!

In the final song of ascents, the pilgrim disciple has finally arrived at their destination: the Temple in Jerusalem, the place of God’s presence with His people. Having worshipped the Lord at the Temple, the pilgrim calls others to bless the Lord and then receives a blessing as well!

As sojourners on the earth, we too are on a journey to the place of the Lord’s presence with His people. We have His presence with us now via the Holy Spirit, but we journey toward a destination where He will dwell with us fully and completely, where we will experience the fullness of His glory and worship Him forever!

As you journey along today, let this psalm remind you of the immensity of the blessing that is God’s presence with His people, and let it fill you with great joy in the hope of the eternal future with Him that is still to come!

Psalm 134

Come, Bless the Lord
A Song of Ascents.

134 Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord,
who stand by night in the house of the Lord!
Lift up your hands to the holy place
    and bless the Lord!

May the Lord bless you from Zion,
he who made heaven and earth

Family Discussion Question:

  • How does the hope of being in the direct presence of God for all of eternity encourage you to bless His name through worship in the here and now?

  2. Dear Heavenly Father,
Bless Your holy name! In all of the turmoil we are experiencing in the world today, it is sometimes hard to quieten the noise and calm the spirit. However, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us, we are reminded of Your promise of everlasting life with You and the cares of the world just fade away. Thank You for loving us so much that You are preparing a place with You right now. Give us patience and courage to meet the challenges of the days before us until we see You in Paradise. In Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen.

  3. We are made to glorify the Lord in all we say and do and to lead others to glorify Him.
When we give praise to the Lord here with others it is a rehearsal for what we will do when we all are with Him in eternity. Worship the Lord in the beauty of His Holiness!!!
Thank you Lord for this present opportunity to praise and glorify You, because of who you are to us….Creator, Redeemer, Deliverer and King!

  6. Lord I come to you every morning in worship music to bless your name give you honor and praise.

  7. For us to be in God’s house at night no be deal but in that time it was a big deal. Only oil lamp and dangers travel back to where they were lodging.
My take is it should always be a big deal when we go to worship in God’s house.

  8. God is with us now, and we will be with him in glory. I pray that I can more fully experience His presence and that his power will be reflected in how I live my life to benefit others, a living sacrifice.

  9. Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this site.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance”
between usability and visual appearance. I must say that you’ve done a amazing job with this.
Also, the blog loads super fast for me on Firefox.
    Exceptional Blog!

  10. May my spirit forever bless you my Father! I pray you use me to bring Glory to your name as long as you give me breath. Thank you for blessing me. In Jesus name I pray??

  11. Excellent blog here! Also your website loads up very fast!
What web host are you using? Can I get your affiliate link to your host?

I wish my web site loaded up as quickly as yours lol

  12. What concerns me is that we have lost our sense of worship. The sanctuary is no longer a sanctuary, a place set aside for God. In its place, we have made it a social hall. It is not a place where people enter to prepare their hearts and minds to meet with a Holy God. Instead of preparation to worship, we socialize with laughter, back slapping and story telling. Is it any wonder that we don’t sense God’s movement? Let’s get back to God.
