John 11:1-45

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

Jesus Weeps

28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him,

  1. Jesus has compassion on His people. He loves us and will weep with us when we are hurting. If we trust and have faith, His words and the Holy Spirit will guide us to eternal life.

  2. They always told me that John 17:35 “Jesus wept” was the shortest verse in the Bible.
Why did Jesus weep? He knew that He could heal Lazarus.

So was it because of the sisters’s doubting him or what? I wonder about this passage of scripture.
Also, where was Lazarus during the 4 days?

  3. Jesus calls to all of us. if we hear him and believe he can save us even in our deepest, worst state. Don’t ever doubt the power and glory of God .

  4. Amen. God loves us so dearly. Jesus wept!! Having emotions like me and you can only be attested to the goodness of the Lord. God I pray you continue to abide in me…and me in you

  5. “Lazarus, come forth” This is the call that raised Lazarus from the dead. Any of us can enter our name into the call…”Keith, come forth”, “Jarett, come forth”, “Amy, come forth”, “Whomever, come forth”. Jesus is calling today and if you come forth you shall receive life eternal and shall never die! There is no greater gift than this in all of the world. Jesus loves you and me and wants us to come to him for salvation that is eternal. Everyone is invited to “come forth”!

  6. I have Never been sure about this regarding it being accurate in regard to how we feel about all the weeping. Yes Lazarus had passed and Jesus was calling him to be resurracted and all his relatives , and others were mourning the passing, but in those four days, Lazarus has seen the glory of Heaven, and did he really want to return to the mess of the earth. JESUS prevail

  7. I love this scripture because it allows us to see Jesus’s human emotions and his true feelings for His friends. He knew Lazarus was dead when He went but He wanted Mary and Martha’s faith to be known for the sake of others inorder that God would get all the glory and others would believe. He didnot have to go and call Lazarus name, he could have spoken it from where He was and raised him from the dead, but would they have believed it the way they believed when they actually saw what happened.
Do we believe God can resurrect any dead life due to sin and allow us to live again in Him by faith. He can certainly do that.

    Be blessed church

  8. The Death of Lazarus

Jesus loves us all but, it has been appointed unto us to die once, but afterward comes judgment. We pray for healing and wait on Jesus to answer our prayers and he does, but we still have an appointment to keep.

Sin is the sickness that leads to death. With Jesus being our Lord and savior, we will die only once. God will have kept his promise and given us eternal life.

We should live our life in such a way that even in death God gets the glory. Only what you do for Christ will last.

Jesus was willing to go back to raise Lazarus from the dead in the face of opposition. In the present of God’s chosen people, the Jews, who sort to kill Jesus? They were chosen, but they didn’t believe in Jesus.

Jesus told his disciples that God’s word gives light enabling one not to live a life of sin and that light exposes the darkness in the heart of men causing them to sin.

Jesus disciples did not have the scrolls; they had Jesus, the living word. Jesus was glad that he was not there when Lazarus died; so that there would be no doubt that he was the resurrection and the life. Jesus was strengthening their faith in him and glorifying the Father. Jesus is still working that miracle, raising people from a sin sick life that leads to death, to a renewed life in him.

Thomas, the twin was willing to follow Jesus back to Judea in the face of known opposition and certain death. We too must be willing to follow Jesus wherever he leads. He is the path, the light, and the life to follow.

  9. I Am the Resurrection and the Life

Jesus went to Lazarus who had been in the tomb for four days, implies that Jesus can work miracles in the lives of those who seems to be doomed beyond redemption. Four days represent a time span. God is alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. He created the days, so time has no restraints on God. He speaks, men live; again, he speak and men die. He’s God, the creator; he controls the time.

Our grief can seem like a two edge sword, it can cause us to run to Jesus for consolation or it can cause us to be still and wait on consolation from Jesus, nonetheless, our hope remains in him.

Martha had head knowledge that Jesus was Lord. She believed that he was the Son of God. And that God was the only one who can raise the dead. She believed that God would give him whatever he asked. She blamed him for not being on time, “if you had been here my brother would not have died.” Still she cast no doubt in his ability to keep Lazarus from dying.

Martha knew of the resurrection in the last day. But now, she is about to witness the resurrection in her present day. Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever. The same resurrection power that raised Jesus from the dead is yet raising us from a sin sick death.

It’s good to believe in Jesus, die once and be raised to eternal life.
It’s not good to deny Jesus, die twice and spend eternity apart from him.
Jesus is the light of the world.

  10. Jesus Weeps
After Martha left Jesus, She went to Mary in private and said that The Teacher is asking for you. By Martha referring to Jesus as Teacher implies that Jesus taught women. Apostle Paul tells us there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female; for we are all one in Christ.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)
Lazarus and his sisters were Jesus’ friends, he loved them very much the scriptures tells us. He had visited their home and dined with them on occasions. So, when Jesus saw Martha and Mary and the friends weeping, he too responded with compassion of tears. Jesus identifies with us in our infirmities. Just as the angels in heaven rejoice when one is saved, Jesus groans in his spirit when he sees how sin has ravaged our lives especially when the kingdom of heaven is near.

Yes, God can keep us from dying, but what kind of God would he be to allow sin to go unpunished. The old life must pass away to make way for new life in Christ Jesus.

  11. Jesus Raises Lazarus
Death represents a separation from life. The smell of a decomposed body is unbearable even for love ones to tolerate. Jesus tells Martha to take away the stone and she reminds Jesus what a four-day-old body smells like. Martha is allowing her past to interfere with her future. Jesus has to remind her that he is the past and the present by reminding her, “If she believes, she would see God’s power and sovereignty over death.

Jesus called Lazarus with a loud voice to come forth as he will do with all believers, according to 1 Thessalonians 4:16; For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. When he call his creation must obey.

Lazarus came out with his hands, feet and mouth wrapped, unable to free himself. Jesus freed Lazarus from both spiritual and physical death. Jesus employs us in the ministry to loosening the bonds that keep others from serving him. We are called into the ministry to further the kingdom of God..
