Genesis 3:1-24

The Fall

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,
    cursed are you above all livestock
    and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
    and dust you shall eat
    all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
    and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
    in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to your husband,
    but he shall rule over you.”

17 And to Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
    and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
    ‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
    in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
    and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face
    you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
    for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
    and to dust you shall return.”

20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

  3. Thank you Jesus for your love and compassion even in the garden of Eden when you clothed Adam and Eve. Thank you Jesus for loving sinners so much that you went to the cross. There was a plan from the very beginning.

  4. Lord Jesus teach us how to bruise the head of satan. As we suite up with the armoire of God renew our minds with the mind of Christ. We go forth with Your banner. Your banner of love. In Jesus Name Amen.

  5. Because of Adam & Eve’s acts in the garden, our paradise was removed. We toil and experience pain and hardships. BUT GOD is good and provides a way thru His SON Jesus to allow us to enter a better paradise when we accept this Free gift. Jesus covered our sin. Paise God. Thank you Jesus!!!

  6. Lord, Your mercy and grace were with us from the very beginning as You sought out Your sinning children and promised a coming Savior born of woman Who would conquer our enemy and sin and death. You mercifully provided a substitute blood sacrifice for the sinning couple to cover their sin and shame – until the day You , the promised Seed, made the ultimate, once for all , perfect sacrifice for us, giving us eternal salvation and eternal life and restored fellowship with You.

  7. Thank you for dying for our sins once and for all. Satan today is cunning like he was at the garden making sinful things more attractive. We have to be on our guard at all times so that we do not succumb to them and mAke us fall.

  8. God loves me so much that He made sure that I have a way to have my many sins erased and then join Him in heaven when my journey in Earth is done. So amazing!

  9. When we disobey God’s instructions, we become naked and lose His protection and everything that comes with it. It is my prayer that God the Father will help us this day to listen to Him and follow His lead in all that we do.

  10. Thank you Father, for forgiveness – guard me from wickedness & thank you for the hope of Heaven.

  11. Thank you Jesus for your endless love, help us today to be able to say No to the voices of Satan and to always say Yes to your command.help us through our journey of faith here on earth as we can not do it alone without your grace.hy spirit of God fill us and uphold us till you come.Amen

  12. Thank you Jesus for being our Risen Redeemer! Your blood covers our sins so we can walk in newness of life. All PRAISE to you! Amen

    1. Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44), and he comes to kill steal and destroy. Thankful that Jesus came so that we may have life and have it more abundantly (to the fullest/ a rich life; John 10:10).

      While studying Genesis as a family, last week I came across an awesome commentary that discussed the correlation between God clothing Adam and Eve with animal skins and the death of Christ.

      When Adam and Eve sinned, in order for God to have clothed them with skins, an animal had to die. God declared from the beginning that the payment for sin is death, so blood must be shed to cover sin (Leviticus 17:11, Hebrews 9:22). Fast forward to the New Testament; animal sacrifice was a temporary fix and a more permanent solution was needed (Hebrews 10:4), a human for human sin, but after Adam and Eve sinned, all of humanity since have been born sinners. A sinner dying for a sinner just wouldn’t work. The only way it would work is if God (perfection) did it himself. So, God Himself became man (Jesus meaning The Lord saved), and He died for our sins. Everyone who makes Jesus the Lord of their life, is covered by His blood, and will spend eternity with Him in Heaven. 🙌🙌

  13. We can’t have confidence in God if we question His love for us. Satan shook Eve’s confidence in what God said by causing her to doubt God’s love in what He had said.

  14. Lord God,
    I acknowledge you as Lord of all. I thank you for Your continuous provision for me both physically and spiritually. Help me know You…truly KNOW You and give me Your wisdom and knowledge and discernment so I will not be deceived but build my life on obedience to You alone. In Jesus Name. Amen.

  15. You are a good, good Father. That is who You Are. Thank You for your mercy though I am not deserving. In your son’s precious name. Amen
