It makes all the difference when you take refuge in God alone, doesn’t it?

This Psalm begins with a petition. David is simply asking God to “Keep me safe.” During this pandemic, it seems like this prayer is on a lot of our lips! Yet the psalmist does not look to anything or anyone but God alone for safety. He trusts Him fully for his safety as seen in verses 2-4.

In verses 5–6 the psalmist addresses the Lord himself as his true, spiritual inheritance and credits him with good gifts in life. David’s life was blessed, and he realized he had a delightful earthly inheritance; however, David recognized that no earthly inheritance was greater than his spiritual inheritance which was his relationship with God!

The next stanza of the psalm, verses 7–8, shows us the natural result of turning to God and trusting him for our needs: praise! This praise is met with affirmation that God will not abandon His followers.

Finally, the Psalm concludes with the psalmist’s joy and the confidence that the Lord will protect him from death. This shows us how awareness of God’s presence brings both direction in this life and hope for all eternity!

Psalm 16 is an ancient hymn of Confidence in the Lord and early Christian communities applied it to the resurrection of Christ. Peter and Paul (Acts 2:25–28; 13:35) extend this interpretation to Jesus, the ultimate Davidic heir in whom the psalm is fulfilled!

Today Psalm 16 can show us that we can experience joy in God’s presence and catch a glimpse of our salvation as eternal life.  Read Psalm 16 and take refuge in the Lord alone: ask Him to keep you safe, and continually proclaim the joy of your salvation!  It will make all the difference in your life.

Psalm 16

You Will Not Abandon My Soul
A Miktam of David.

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    I have no good apart from you.”

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.

The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or take their names on my lips.

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
    or let your holy one see corruption.

11 You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

I praise you because I know that You will always guide me to what is best for me.  Father there is nothing greater than having a relationship with you and knowing you have given me eternal life.

  1. Dear Heavenly Father,
    Thank you for loving me and for always being by my side.
    I have known You since I was a young child and I have always rejoiced at the sound of Your name. You are my Counselor, my Protector, my Savior and my Friend and there is no joy or hope for this life without You. When things are trying or sad I can still find courage and strength to go on because I am reminded that this life is but a temporary dwelling place.
    You are already preparing a home for me to live with you forever. The things of this world, though beautiful as they can be, pale against the promise of living in Eternity with you. Because I have this assurance I can face all of my days. Help me daily in my walks and talks with others to be an instrument for Your glory. Lead me in the paths that You would have me go and help me direct others to you. In the name of Jesus, the name above all names, I pray. Amen!

      1. Amen thank you Jesus. I want to be with you I want to love you. You are my refuge, you are my best friend. I can talk to when ever I want. You are my Lord and Savior. HALLELUJAh!!

  2. 2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)
    But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

    Thank you Jesus that we are able to receive the blessings God has for us in the midst of difficult times when we seek refuge in you alone. Amen

  3. Thank You Lord for joy You give. Enable me to pass that joy on to others. Some of the sweetest times I spend with You are when I wake up in the middle of the night and there’s a song singing in my heart or a prayer on my lips. It’s as if You’re instructing me, comforting me, and guiding me as I sleep. Your constant care over me blesses me.

    You are always with me, and I shall not fear the unknown because You are already there. Keep my thoughts steadfast on Your promises as I walk through these uncertain times, Lord. I pray You will help me to share how great and amazing You are to those around me. The world is in need. And You are the answer. Bless Your Holy name! Amen.

  22. I’m so thankful that He is always with me. I thought of this old song by Merle Haggard:

    I come to the garden alone
    While the dew is still on the roses
    And the voice I hear falling on my ear
    The son of god discloses
    And he walks with me and he talks with me
    And he tells me I am his own
    And the joy we share as we tarry there
    None other has ever known
    He speaks and the sound of his voice
    Is so sweet the birds hush their singing
    And the melody that he gave to me
    Within my heart is ringing
    And he walks with me and he talks with me
    And he tells me I am his own…
    Thank you Lord that you are our protector and help us to always rejoice in you.

  23. Thank you Lord for your everlasting love & protection. Thank you for keeping my family & me safe during these trying times. Thank you for all that you do to bless me! In Jesus name, Amen

  24. In these unhappy circumstances, give me joy Lord. A joy based on my spiritual reality, not this temporary reality, but my relationship with you, that you have saved me and that you are with me now, and forever.

  25. Father, there is no safer place than under your wings. There is no one who has the power to save but you. There is no scientist, government, and another human being that is worthy to be called holy. That belongs to you only. What is mere man that we should dare to believe that we do not need a savior, for our foolishness we are under the impression that we can do it ourselves. I am so thankful Lord that you have called me your own. I need you, oh I need you every hour I need you. Never allow me to stray so far from you that I can no longer hear your voice.

  26. Thanks my God because you are all for me, thank you for found me and to be here for me every single day. You know my soul, everything of me and you continue loved me. I’m here. I love you!

  27. Love this verse!

    You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
