Isaiah 59:1-21

Evil and Oppression

59 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save,
    or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
but your iniquities have made a separation
    between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
    so that he does not hear.
For your hands are defiled with blood
    and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies;
    your tongue mutters wickedness.
No one enters suit justly;
    no one goes to law honestly;
they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies,
    they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.
They hatch adders’ eggs;
    they weave the spider’s web;
he who eats their eggs dies,
    and from one that is crushed a viper is hatched.
Their webs will not serve as clothing;
    men will not cover themselves with what they make.
Their works are works of iniquity,
    and deeds of violence are in their hands.
Their feet run to evil,
    and they are swift to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
    desolation and destruction are in their highways.
The way of peace they do not know,
    and there is no justice in their paths;
they have made their roads crooked;
    no one who treads on them knows peace.

Therefore justice is far from us,
    and righteousness does not overtake us;
we hope for light, and behold, darkness,
    and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We grope for the wall like the blind;
    we grope like those who have no eyes;
we stumble at noon as in the twilight,
    among those in full vigor we are like dead men.
11 We all growl like bears;
    we moan and moan like doves;
we hope for justice, but there is none;
    for salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our transgressions are multiplied before you,
    and our sins testify against us;
for our transgressions are with us,
    and we know our iniquities:
13 transgressing, and denying the Lord,
    and turning back from following our God,
speaking oppression and revolt,
    conceiving and uttering from the heart lying words.

Judgment and Redemption

14 Justice is turned back,
    and righteousness stands far away;
for truth has stumbled in the public squares,
    and uprightness cannot enter.
15 Truth is lacking,
    and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.

The Lord saw it, and it displeased him
    that there was no justice.
16 He saw that there was no man,
    and wondered that there was no one to intercede;
then his own arm brought him salvation,
    and his righteousness upheld him.
17 He put on righteousness as a breastplate,
    and a helmet of salvation on his head;
he put on garments of vengeance for clothing,
    and wrapped himself in zeal as a cloak.
18 According to their deeds, so will he repay,
    wrath to his adversaries, repayment to his enemies;
    to the coastlands he will render repayment.
19 So they shall fear the name of the Lord from the west,
    and his glory from the rising of the sun;
for he will come like a rushing stream,
    which the wind of the Lord drives.

20 “And a Redeemer will come to Zion,
    to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,” declares the Lord.

21 “And as for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord: “My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children’s offspring,” says the Lord, “from this time forth and forevermore.”

  1. Dear Heavenly Father,
    Thank you for putting out your hand of salvation, for washing us of our iniquities
    Please do not turn your face on us but deliver us from all evil. Keep us forever near to Thee, oh Lord I pray. Amen.

    1. Father keep me on the right path to you my Lord. I want to walk beside you everyday. Amen and Glory be to our Lord and Savior,🙏🏻✝🙏🏻✝💜💜

  2. Verses 18-20 really jump out at me because depending on where your heart is, Christ’s second coming will look different:
    As Believers, we will REJOICE our Redeemer but Jesus’ enemies will be terrified !!

  3. “but your iniquities have made a separation
    between you and your God,
    and your sins have hidden his face from you
    so that he does not hear.”

    Heavenly Father, help me to hear your voice in all that I do, that I may act through the Holy Spirit, rather than to satisfy my own fleshly desires. Help me to do everything I must so that there is no separation between you and me. Help me to live close to you and to be your light. In Jesus’ most holy name. Amen

  4. Justice is turned back,
    and righteousness stands far away;
    for truth has stumbled in the public squares,
    and uprightness cannot enter

    man, this sounds an awful lot like the day and age we live in. We live in an America where few are hungry and homeless, and there are wonderful aspects to living in the U.S. But we have radically allowed truth to slide.

  5. “Truth has stumbled in the public squares…The Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice. He ….wondered that there was no one to intercede.”

  6. Amen. Lord Jesus as we fast and pray pressing into You Lord May we hear You speak. I come from a people of unclean lips. Forgive me Lord. Wash me Jesus white as snow so I can hear You more clearly. In Jesus Name Amen.

  7. Even in the face of oppression, God is faithful and His help is always close by. We need to remember that He is there and all we have to do is to stretch out our hand and hold tight. He will always come through for us. May the Holy Spirit be our guide today in all that we do in Jesus’s name.

  8. May the lord bring hope and truth to his believers and destruction to evil doers. God loves everyone with grace and hope. I prayed that the lord forgives our sins and brings joy to our spirit.com

  9. Isaiah 59:2 “but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,
    and your sins have hidden his face from you
    so that he does not hear.”

    JESUS – the One who bridges the gap of sin through the cross!

    Dear Lord, Because of the cross, we can walk in freedom, in forgiveness and in truth! Light of the World, we love You! Amen

  10. Loved reading all the above commentaries. I agree with them. Thank you, Lord, for dropping me into this company of fellow students of your word, today. And, thank you that your Word is always alive.

  11. “16 He saw that there was no man,
    and wondered that there was no one to intercede;
    then His own arm brought him salvation,
    and His righteousness upheld him.”

    Thank You Father for supplying my greatest need.

  12. Verse 15-17 describe why God had to provide a Redeemer. The Lord saw all the evil and was displeased to find no steps taken against sin. He saw no one helping so he stepped in to save us.

  13. Our Lord sees and knows everything going on in our world and in our lives and our heart of hearts. And His Sovereign plan is going forth. As believers we know the mercy and grace of God and the power of His Spirit will enable us to stand in these last days, holding forth the word of life. He Himself will take care of all evil and bring forth true righteousness.

  14. Thank GOD for HIS saving Grace & for solving a problem that we could not fix. because of our sin & rebellion kept widening the gap b/w man (us) & GOD. GOD is able to save, He’s Omnipotent & He’s omnipresent, so HIS arm is not to short to reach us. The LORD is GOD, I will praise HIS greatness & give HIM thanks, because HE is good & HIS love is eternal.
    Don, thank you for the blessing and many, many, many more blessings back to you & Judy.

  15. Isaiah 59: Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save,
    or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
    2 but your iniquities have made a separation
    between you and your God,
    and your sins have hidden his face from you
    so that he does not hear.

    Father, thanks you for your saving grace and for providing Reconciliation through Jesus Christ our Savior. Guide is Holy Spirit to live lives worthy of God’s live and grace! AMEN

  16. .
    What a promise!

    What a promise we have if we turn back to our Lord. He gives us HIS SPIRIT and puts His words in our mouth. But not only our mouths but our children’s and our children’s children …forevermore!

  17. Thank you Lord that you removed my heart of stone towards you and replaced it with a heart of flesh, so that I am no longer Your enemy, but now an adopted son and heir with Christ. I know it was You alone, by Your Grace alone that I am now saved from Your wrath that is coming. You alone are holy.

    “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭5:8-11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

    “And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, He has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him,”
    ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:21-22‬ ‭ESV‬‬

    “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:16-17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

  18. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23

    “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

    Sin separates us from God. When we are not walking with God, we are walking in darkness. Our first step towards freedom in Christ and walking in the light, is acknowledging that we are sinners, repenting from our sin, making Jesus the Lord of our lives, turning from sin, beholding God daily as our mirror, allowing God to transform us from glory to glory, (through prayer, worship, reading the Word, fasting; dwelling and living in His glorious presence), into becoming more like Him; living a righteous (right living), holy life, sharing the gospel and drawing others towards Christ, making the great commission our mission.

    Christ is returning. His words will not be returned void. He is faithful to his promises and they will come to pass. ❤️
