Kid Life Groups: October 4

Jesus Resisted Temptation (1st-5th Grade)

Today in KidLife Groups, 1st-5th Graders learn that God can help us resist temptation just as Jesus did. When the devil tempts us, we can recall Scripture, and just like Jesus, we can rely on God’s Word to rebuke the enemy.

Review the Bible story. Jesus resisted temptation by quoting Scripture relevant to the temptation. Ask your child about temptations he faces. Help him find and learn Scriptures relating to specific temptations.

Andrew Brought His Brother to Jesus (Preschool)

Today in KidLife Groups, Preschoolers learn that people can learn about who Jesus is and what He did.

Sit with your child or family and turn pages in the Bible through the New Testament. Tell your child that the New Testament is the part of the Bible that tells what Jesus said and did when He was here on earth. Help your child open the Bible to John 1 and find Jesus’ name in the Bible text. Tell your child that he can learn about Jesus at home and at church. He can learn who Jesus is and what Jesus did.

Use these simple steps to guide your family during today’s Life Group time.

Step 1: Print Activity Pages

Print one for each child. This is a great tool to have as you go through the videos. Each download includes the Activity Page for your child and a One Conversation page for you to use with the Bible reference and story.

Step 2: Watch Bible Story Video

Before you press play, sit together and pray. Thank God for this special day to worship and learn about Him. Then, watch the Bible story video together.

Bible Verse Tree

  • Have your child draw a picture of a tree trunk on a sheet of paper.
  • Have them draw 6 leaves on that tree trunk.
  • On 3 leaves they should write Proverbs 15:1; Luke 6:35; Philippians 2:14
  • On the remaining 3 leaves, they should write what the verse is telling them to remember.
  • Remind your child that God helps us resist temptation just a Jesus did.

  • Recall William Dove’s story about talking with a friend about David and Goliath.
  • Invite kids to share their own stories about times when they talked with their friends about Jesus.
  • Pray that the missionaries serving in Norway will have many opportunities to tell friends about Jesus.

5. Pray

  • Ask God to keep us strong and resist temptation.
  • Thank God for his forgiveness.
  • Thank God for sending Jesus to set the ultimate example on how to live.

October DBR

Daily Bible Reading (DBR) prepares 1st-5th Graders for what they will learn on Sunday. Your child will discover new and amazing things about God, Jesus and the Bible! Encourage your child to have a journal and write what they learn each day. Set a goal to spend time daily reading the Bible and praying with your child. Or encourage them to do so independently.

Follow Jesus’ Example

In this month’s Daily Bible Reading (DBR) kids will discover that people can follow Jesus’ example. Kids will focus on stories of Jesus’ interactions with people—specifically, His disciples, a tax collector, and some children. Kids also will hear how Jesus resisted temptation and how He prayed in the garden. All these Bible stories point to the fact that people can be in right relationship with God through Jesus—isn’t that the truth of the gospel?

Kids will be reminded that people are God’s most valuable creation. Because He loves us so much, He will help us take deliberate actions to follow Jesus and honor Him with our choices.

The CFBC Kids Ministry team joins you in praying that kids might walk in the footsteps of Jesus, emulating His love and becoming both disciples and disciple-makers.

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Today in KidLife Groups, children learn that God gives people strength to obey in difficult times. Daniel was thrown into a lions’ den for disobeying the king’s law, but God protected him.

Help your child understand that she will face difficulties in her Christian faith. Talk about situations she might have already faced because of her beliefs. Remind your child that God is with her, just as God was with Daniel.

Use these simple steps to guide your family during today’s Life Group time.

Step 1: Print Activity Pages

Print one for each child. This is a great tool to have as you go through the videos. Each download includes the Activity Page for your child and a One Conversation page for you to use with the Bible reference and story.

Activities

Babies-Kinder

One’s & Two’s
Build A Lions’ Den With Blocks
Gather: Kids Activity Page, blocks, toy lions (if you have them).

  • Invite your child to play with his/her blocks. Use your Kids Activity Page or Bible to tell the Bible story as your child plays.
  • Comment that God helps people obey Him.
  • Suggest that your child use blocks to build a lions’ den. They can place toy lions inside. Talk about the Bible story and go over the Weekly Verse, Psalm 50:15, “Call to Me, and I will help you.”

Three’s – PreK
Make An Obey Mobile
Gather: Kids Activity Page, Bible, heavyweight paper, stamps and stamp pad (optional), index cards, markers, yarn, hole punch, scissors.

  • Fold paper in half (lengthwise) and print “Obey God” on it.
  • Go over Bible story using the Kids Activity Page and Bible.
  • Invite your child to use the index cards to make cards to go on his/her mobile. He/she could draw a picture of themselves obeying God. Help him/her write “God helps people,” and “Call to Me, and I will help you, Psalm 50:15” on index cards. Another verse he/she can write is the Unit Verse, “Love God and always do what He says” Deuteronomy 30:20. Your child can use any materials you have to create however many index cards he/she would like. Ask your child to think about how he/she can obey God.
  • When finished creating the index cards, help child punch holes at the top (and bottom of some) of each card and string cards together at varying lengths to create a mobile. Review the Bible story as you both work.

Kindergarten
Make A Bible Verse Quilt
Gather: Kids Activity Page, construction paper of different colors, masking tape (colored, if you have it), scissors, markers, gel pens.

  • Cut construction paper into 3-inch squares (child will need nine squares).
  • Go over Kids Activity Page with your child, discuss the Bible story. Tell your child that God helped Daniel know how to obey Him. Go over the Weekly Verse, “Call to Me, and I will help you. Psalm 50:15”
  • Ask your child to print one word and the reference (from the Weekly Verse) on each square of construction paper. He/she can decorate their squares with markers and gel pens.
  • When your child is finished with his/her writing and drawing, help him/her cut tape to attach the squares in a 3-by-3 grid arrangement with the words in order. Enjoy the beautiful quilt and Bible verse together.

1st-5th Grade

Strength Building

  • Lead your child/children in basic exercises. (toe touches, running in place, jumping jacks, arm circles, & squats)
  • Tell the kids that these exercises are designed to strengthen our bodies. Today we will hear a story about how God gives a different kind of strength. God gives us strength to obey even when it’s hard.

Difficult Toss

  • Place a plastic cup on the floor. Ball up a sheet of paper or ball that would fit in the cup.
  • Stand close and toss the ball into the cup.
  • After your child makes the toss into the cup, have him/her take a step back. Then toss.
  • Repeat a few times.
  • Ask if the toss became more difficult?
  • Remind your children that is just like in our lives. Some things can be difficult. Daniel was faced with a difficult decision and God gave him the strength to obey.

Four in a Row

  • If you have a connect 4 game- great! If not, just draw a grid with 16 squares on a paper.
  • Ask your child a review question and every correct answer gets a turn. Have them try to get 4 in a row.
  • Remind them God is powerful and in control of all things. Just like God was with Daniel in our Bible story today, God is with each one of us every single day.

Memory Verse Review

  • Have your child look up and read aloud Deuteronomy 30:20.
  • Make up hand motions and a chant as they shout the memory verse.

4. Missions Emphasis

  • Guide kids to review the missions story.
  • Explain that even though Luis and Betty Soto serve in a church where most people speak English, God is using them to share the good news of Jesus in Spanish.
  • Show kids a Spanish Bible passage either found online or using a Spanish Bible.
  • Use the “Jesus Loves You” printable from the missions download above and display it.
  • Lead kids to say the phrase in English and then in Spanish.
  • Pray and thank God for the Sotos and the work they are doing in Salt Lake City, Utah.

5. Pray

  • Thank God for always being there for us, every single day.
  • Ask God to help give us strength to obey His commands.
  • Thank God for his forgiveness when we do not obey Him.
  • Thank God for sending Jesus to be our Savior.

God Sent Rain (Babies-PreK)

Today Babies-PreK learn that God told Elijah He was going to send rain, and He did! God can do all things. Name things that people can do and things only God can do. Ask your child to identify the things that only God can do.

Use these simple steps to guide your family during today’s Life Group time.

REVIEW
Supplies: Bag of Marbles for each team.

  • Form two teams and give each player a marble. Teams will compete to collect the most marbles.
  • Demonstrate how to knock marbles out of the circle by flicking a marble toward the marbles in  the circle to knock them out. Explain that the team will get to keep the marbles if they  correctly answers a Review Question.
  • Repeat, allowing new players from each team to knock  out marbles. Play until each child has a turn or until kids answer all the questions. If needed,  supplement the Review Questions with true/false statements.
  • Declare the team with the most  marbles the winner.
    • Whom did God tell Elijah to go and find? (King Ahab)
    • What did Elijah say had caused trouble in Israel? (Ahab’s family had followed false gods.)
    • What did Elijah ask the people to decide? (whether to follow God or Baal)
    • What was Elijah’s plan to prove who was the true God? (Two bulls would be placed on altars. The  God who answered with fire would be known as the true God.)
    • What did Elijah do that made the contest more difficult? (He told helpers to pour water over his  altar and sacrifice.)
    • How did the contest end? (Nothing happened to the sacrifice to Baal. God sent fire to burn Elijah’s  sacrifice. The people cried out that the Lord is God.)
    • Where in the Bible is today’s story found?
    • What is one way you obeyed God this week?
    • What distractions keep you from making God number one in your life?

BIBLE SKILLS / Old or New Testament?
Supplies: Create cards on 3×5 note cards with all the books of bible

Sit in a circle. Spread the “Books of the Bible Cards” face down in the circle. Kids take turns picking one card. If an Old Testament card is chosen, the child will make up a dance move. The child continues to dance while each team member says the name of the book of the Bible. If the player picks a New Testament card, the player must make up a random sound. The child continues to make the sound while each team member says the name of the book of the Bible. Invite children to confirm the book has been identified in the correct part of the Bible. Continue the exercise until kids choose all the cards.

GAME / FOCUS ON THE BALL
Supplies: 3 Balls

  • Guide the kids to form a large circle. Going around the circle, ask the kids to each say their first names. Afterwards, toss a ball to the child with the name that comes first alphabetically. Continue tossing the ball to each other in alphabetical order of the children’s names. Repeat tossing in alphabetical order for a few rounds.
  • When children have a good rhythm passing the ball, toss a second ball to the first child as the first ball is thrown to the third child. After a few rounds of using two balls, add a third ball.
  • Ask: “What made the game challenging?” Explain how hard it was to focus when there were so many balls in the circle. Sometimes there are things that distract us from making good decisions. For example, we might get busy playing a game and forget to clean our rooms. ʹ Explain that in today’s Bible story, the people of Israel were called to follow the one true God, but something happened.

4. Missions Emphasis

  • Call attention to the “Map of the United States,” the “Utah Photos,” and the “Utah Photo Captions.”
  • Invite kids to share things they remember about Luis and Betty Soto and the work they are doing in Salt Lake City.
  • Show the “Intro to Salt Lake City” video.
  • Remind kids that many of the people in Utah have heard of Jesus, but they do not know the truth of who Jesus is that is found in the Bible.
  • Invite volunteers to pray that many people in Utah would discover the truth that Jesus is God’s Son and trust in Him as Savior.

5. Pray

  • Heavenly Father thank you for all that you provide for us.
  • Thank you for being the one true God.
  • We pray for our church leaders and the decisions they have to make.
  • Thank you for me family and friends.

PSC Update 9.17.2020

The following is an update from the Pastor Search Committee.
September 17, 2020

On behalf of the nine-member Pastor Search Committee, we want to share with you a brief update on where we are in our process.

In our August 4th, update, we wanted to bring to your attention two items that are worth reiterating:

  1. The PSC, in conjunction with our consultant, Vanderbloemen, officially began “seeking” internal and external candidates for the Senior Pastor Role at CFBC.
  2. The PSC provided a Key Milestones Flow Chart describing the PSC’s overall process, along with the numerous steps completed and the remaining tasks, toward finding our next Sr Pastor.

Since August 4th, Vanderbloemen, under the direction of the PSC, has moved from candidate identification to actively screening candidates via phone and personal interviews. This part of the search process will continue until God’s man for the Senior Pastor has been selected. Currently, PSC is awaiting Vanderbloemen’s recommendation of potential candidates to be interviewed by PSC.  The PSC Team is busy formulating key questions that we will want to ask each candidate in the PSC interview processes.

Major input to the Senior Pastor Profile, and questions the PSC will be asking to each candidate in the interview processes, includes valuable and insightful information from the survey results provided by you, the congregation, and the CFBC staff. We want to thank you for your participation.

We covet your prayers in the days ahead. We would encourage you to periodically check the website for additional progress made.  Please view the updated Key Milestones Flow Chart so you will know exactly how to pray for the PSC.

Joshua and Jericho

Today children learn that God expects people to obey Him. When the Israelites were ready to conquer Jericho, God gave specific instructions. Joshua and the people followed God’s plan and won!

Remind your child how Joshua and the people followed God’s direction for conquering Jericho. Help your child search the Bible to find instructions God has provided for us to follow to show our obedience to Him.

Use these simple steps to guide your family during today’s Life Group time.

Step 1: Print Activity Pages

Print one for each child. This is a great tool to have as you go through the videos. Each download includes the Activity Page for your child and a One Conversation page for you to use with the Bible reference and story.

  • Go over Kids Activity Page with your child.
  • Give your child at least four graham crackers squares and frosting. Guide him/her to spread the frosting on the edge of the crackers and build a structure.
  • Mention that the city of Jericho had tall walls all around it. Remind your child that God told Joshua what to do so the walls would fall.
  • Go over weekly verse (Deut. 30:20, “Love God and always do what He says”) in the Bible and comment that Joshua loved God and did what He said. Say that God tells us to do what He says.

Kindergarten
Build A Walled City

  • Go over Kids Activity Page with your child. Be sure to point out picture of Joshua and the people next to the tall wall.
  • Talk about the Bible story as your child begins to build a walled city. Say that God gave instructions to Joshua for what the people were to do. Comment that when the people shouted, God caused the walls to fall down.
  • Invite your child to work to build a large, walled city using the blocks and materials you have gathered. Remind him/her that the people listened to God when He told them to obey Him. Lead your child to repeal Deuteronomy 30:20 with you, “Love God and always do what He says.”

1st-5th Grade

Water Ballon Books of the Bible

  • You will to have water balloons filled and ready.
  • Go outside and have family members pair off and stand about 6 feet apart.
  • Toss balloon back and forth saying each book of the Bible in order.
  • When a balloon breaks, start over with Genesis.
  • See which team can say the most books of the Bible without breaking a balloon.

7 Hidden Instructions

  • Write 7 different instructions on pieces of paper. (i.e. make chicken noises, jog in place for 10 steps, walk backward until you find the next note, etc)
  • Hide the notes in a room.
  • Have your child find the notes and follow the instructions on the notes.
  • After a little time, ask your child to bring you the notes. Read them aloud & note that they make very little sense.
  • Remind kids that in today’s story, following God’s instructions probably did not make sense. But by obeying God, the people were able to capture a whole city.

Knock it Down

  • You will need 10 plastic cups and a tennis ball.
  • Set up the cups like bowling pins.
  • Have your child answer a review question.
    • What was the name of city God gave the people of Israel?
    • How was Jericho protected?
    • What did the priests carry with them as they marched?
    • What did the army do after they marched on the 7th day?
    • Did God’s plan work?
    • Was God’s plan the usual way an army would attack a city?
  • If they answer correctly, they roll the tennis ball to knock down cups and get points for every cup they knock down.

4. Missions Emphasis

  • Review the missions story about Luis and Betty Soto, missionaries living in Salt Lake City, Utah. Remind kids that Luis preaches and teaches in Spanish so that people can understand and choose to trust Jesus as Savior.
  • Lead kids to match the “Utah Photo Captions” to the “Utah Photos.”
  • Provide tape pieces for kids to attach the captions to the wall near the photos.
  • Pray that many people would come to the church in Salt Lake City. Pray that they would hear the good news and trust in Jesus as their Savior.

5. Pray

  • Thank God for his faithfulness and His love for all of us.
  • Ask God to help us obey His commands.
  • Thank God for his forgiveness when we do not obey Him.
  • Thank God for sending Jesus to be our Savior.

Into Faith I Go

Into Faith I Go (Jersey Village)

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1

When we read through Hebrews 11, we are given examples of those who have been defined by their faith: Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and many others. What was the measure of their faith? It was that they sought God and followed in the path where He directed them.

It can be hard to step out into the unknown, but there are times that God calls us to do just that: to be obedient and to go where he would send us, do what He asks of us, and become who He is calling us to be. You may not see the end of the road, but Psalm 119:105 tell us that he will illuminate our path every step of the way – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

This song from our Jersey Village Campus worship team is an encouragement to seek the Father and follow in faith where He leads.

Lyrics

Verse 1
I’ve never been good at change
If I’m honest, it’s always scared me
But I can’t deny this stirring deep inside me
Now I know it’s time to stop resisting

‘Cause I’m not getting any younger
Fear is a such a sad way to live a life
So face to the wind, I’m jumping out, I’m walking in
Every single thing You want to show me

Chorus
To the ups and downs, the highs and lows
The taking in, the letting go
To tears and laughter, the great unknown
To the open journey, into faith, I go
Into faith, I go

Verse 2
Nobody said this would be easy
Anyone who did never went through anything painful
But faith is not some fragile thing that
Shatters when we walk through something hard
So, we walk on whatever may come

Chorus
To the ups and downs, the highs and lows
The taking in, the letting go
To tears and laughter, the great unknown
To the open journey, into faith, I go

Bridge
Running like a child in an open field
Stepping off the edge, I’m facing all my fears
If this is what it feels like to be born again
I’ll be born again

Verse 3
So when I feel like giving up
When I feel like throwing it all away
I look back over my shoulder
And I can see Your goodness
Every single step that I have taken

And it beats like a drum
And it rings like a bell
And it sings like a choir
And it’s leading me on my way
Oh, You lead me on my way

Chorus
To the ups and downs, the highs and lows
The taking in, the letting go
To tears and laughter, the great unknown
To the open journey, into faith, I go
Into faith, I go
Into faith, I go
