{"id":768,"date":"2020-06-16T00:10:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T05:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=768"},"modified":"2020-06-15T13:27:08","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T18:27:08","slug":"6-16-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/6-16-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Devotional-June 16"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>June 16, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are going to spend the next two weeks together as a church reading Jesus\u2019 teachings in the Sermon on the Mount! The Sermon on the Mount is the first of Jesus\u2019 major teachings recorded in the gospel of Matthew. In it, Jesus explains the ethics and values of the kingdom of Heaven as opposed to the ethics and values of the world. The values and principles that are to govern our lives as followers of Jesus and citizens of the kingdom of Heaven are wildly different from those that govern the various cultures of our world, including the culture in which we live. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next two weeks, allow the words of the Lord Jesus to challenge the way you think, expose the worldly and idolatrous values and desires of your heart, and transform you to live in the new way that He has laid before us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s passage Jesus describes His followers as\u00a0<em>the salt of the earth<\/em> and as\u00a0<em>the light of the world<\/em>. Both of these descriptors refer to the way in which followers of Jesus are meant to interact with and influence the world around them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1<sup>st<\/sup> century salt was used in two ways: to preserve and enhance flavor. Jesus could have had either or both of these uses in mind when he called us the salt of the earth! As disciples of the Holy One, we are meant to preserve the world from spiritual and moral decay\u00a0<em>as well as<\/em>enhancing the world. Our presence in our neighborhoods, our communities, and our culture should work to stave off the advance of darkness and evil as well as to bring about light and goodness and beauty and truth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus\u2019 reference to His followers as the light of the world means that, because we have. Been. Inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit, we are now empowered to put the glory, holiness, love, and goodness of God on display through our good works! When people look at our lives, they should see a picture of who God is and give glory to Him!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we step into a world that remains in the darkness, confusion, and chaos produced by sin, may we ever stand against the darkness, adding beauty and light and life to the world around us by our lives, and pointing others to who Jesus is through the good works that we perform!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-d1849fb ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-d1849fb-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}.ugb-d1849fb-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-d1849fb-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-d1849fb-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Matthew 5:13-16<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Salt and Light<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cYou are the salt of the earth,&nbsp;but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people&#8217;s feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYou are the light of the world.
