{"id":380,"date":"2020-04-04T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-04T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=380"},"modified":"2020-04-03T12:56:16","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T18:56:16","slug":"mark-april-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/mark-april-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Chapter 14"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Day 14: April 4, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is\nappropriate as we approach Holy Week (April 5-11) that today\u2019s reading covers\nmany of the events of the last week of Jesus\u2019 life before the Resurrection. We\nsee Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Anointed at Bethany<\/li><li>Betrayed by Judas<\/li><li>Instituting the Lord\u2019s Supper with\nthe disciples<\/li><li>Tried by Jewish religious leaders<\/li><li>Mocked and beaten by the guards<\/li><li>And dramatically denied by Peter<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>CFBC-JV has\nbeen performing an outdoor drama called \u201cJourney to the Cross\u201d for years\n(except this year, unfortunately). As a result of walking through that\nheart-wrenching drama, any time I read about Jesus\u2019 last days, I am transported\nto that time and place. I can see the scenes in my mind. As you read today, ask\nthe Lord to transport you to that special series of events, when our Lord\nwillingly gave Himself to be sacrificed for us. \u201cFor our sake he made him to be\nsin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.\u201d\n(2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-1790aca ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-1790aca-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}.ugb-1790aca-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-1790aca-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-1790aca-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mark 14<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Plot to Kill Jesus<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>1&nbsp;It was now two days before&nbsp;the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes&nbsp;were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>for they said, \u201cNot during the feast,&nbsp;lest there be an uproar from the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Anointed at Bethany<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>And while he was at&nbsp;Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,&nbsp;as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>There were some who said to themselves indignantly, \u201cWhy was the ointment wasted like that?&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii&nbsp;and&nbsp;given to the poor.\u201d And they&nbsp;scolded her.&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>But Jesus said,&nbsp;\u201cLeave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;you always have the poor with you, and whenever&nbsp;you want, you can do good for them. But&nbsp;you will not always have me.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand&nbsp;for burial.&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And truly, I say to you, wherever&nbsp;the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told&nbsp;in memory of her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Judas to Betray Jesus<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>Then&nbsp;Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve,&nbsp;went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to&nbsp;betray him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Passover with the Disciples<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And on&nbsp;the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they&nbsp;sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, \u201cWhere will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And he sent&nbsp;two of his disciples and said to them,&nbsp;\u201cGo into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him,&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,&nbsp;\u2018The Teacher says, Where is&nbsp;my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?\u2019&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>And he will show you&nbsp;a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>And when it was evening, he came with the twelve.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>And as they were reclining at table and eating,&nbsp;Jesus said,&nbsp;\u201cTruly, I say to you, one of you will betray me,&nbsp;one who is eating with me.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, \u201cIs it I?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>He said to them,&nbsp;\u201cIt is&nbsp;one of the twelve,&nbsp;one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>For the Son of Man goes&nbsp;as it is written of him, but&nbsp;woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed!&nbsp;It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Institution of the Lord&#8217;s Supper<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>And as they were eating, he took bread, and after&nbsp;blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said,&nbsp;\u201cTake;&nbsp;this is my body.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>And he took a cup, and when he had&nbsp;given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cThis is my&nbsp;blood of the&nbsp;covenant, which is poured out for&nbsp;many.&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Foretells Peter&#8217;s Denial<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they had sung a hymn,&nbsp;they went out to&nbsp;the Mount of Olives.&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus said to them,&nbsp;\u201cYou will all fall away, for it is written, \u2018I will&nbsp;strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>But after I am raised up,&nbsp;I will go before you to Galilee.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>Peter said to him, \u201cEven though they all fall away, I will not.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;Jesus said to him,&nbsp;\u201cTruly, I tell you, this very night, before&nbsp;the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;he said emphatically, \u201cIf I must die with you, I will not deny you.\u201d And they all said the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Prays in Gethsemane<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>And they went&nbsp;to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples,&nbsp;\u201cSit here while I pray.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>And he took with him&nbsp;Peter and James and John, and began&nbsp;to be greatly distressed and troubled.&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cMy soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and&nbsp;watch.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>And going a little farther, he fell on the ground&nbsp;and prayed that, if it were possible,&nbsp;the hour might pass from him.&nbsp;<sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said,&nbsp;\u201cAbba, Father,&nbsp;all things are possible for you. Remove&nbsp;this cup from me.&nbsp;Yet not what I will, but what you will.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter,&nbsp;\u201cSimon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>Watch and&nbsp;pray that you may not&nbsp;enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>And again he went away and prayed,&nbsp;saying the same words.&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>And again he came and found them sleeping, for&nbsp;their eyes were very heavy, and&nbsp;they did not know what to answer him.&nbsp;<sup>41&nbsp;<\/sup>And he came the third time and said to them,&nbsp;\u201cAre you still sleeping and taking your rest?&nbsp;It is enough;&nbsp;the hour has come.&nbsp;The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.&nbsp;<sup>42&nbsp;<\/sup>Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>43&nbsp;<\/sup>And immediately, while he was still speaking,&nbsp;Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.&nbsp;<sup>44&nbsp;<\/sup>Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, \u201cThe one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>45&nbsp;<\/sup>And when he came, he went up to him at once and said,&nbsp;\u201cRabbi!\u201d And he&nbsp;kissed him.&nbsp;<sup>46&nbsp;<\/sup>And they laid hands on him and seized him.&nbsp;<sup>47&nbsp;<\/sup>But one of those who stood by drew his&nbsp;sword and struck the servant&nbsp;of the high priest and cut off his ear.&nbsp;<sup>48&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus said to them,&nbsp;\u201cHave you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?&nbsp;<sup>49&nbsp;<\/sup>Day after day I was with you in the temple&nbsp;teaching, and you did not seize me. But&nbsp;let the Scriptures be fulfilled.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>50&nbsp;<\/sup>And they all left him and fled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Young Man Flees<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>51&nbsp;<\/sup>And a young man followed him, with nothing but&nbsp;a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,&nbsp;<sup>52&nbsp;<\/sup>but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Before the Council<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>53&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.&nbsp;<sup>54&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;Peter had followed him at a distance,&nbsp;right into&nbsp;the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with&nbsp;the guards and&nbsp;warming himself at the fire.&nbsp;<sup>55&nbsp;<\/sup>Now the chief priests and the whole council&nbsp;were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.&nbsp;<sup>56&nbsp;<\/sup>For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony&nbsp;did not agree.&nbsp;<sup>57&nbsp;<\/sup>And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,&nbsp;<sup>58&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWe heard him say,&nbsp;\u2018I will destroy this temple&nbsp;that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another,&nbsp;not made with hands.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<sup>59&nbsp;<\/sup>Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.&nbsp;<sup>60&nbsp;<\/sup>And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, \u201cHave you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>61&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;he remained silent and made no answer.&nbsp;Again the high priest asked him, \u201cAre you&nbsp;the Christ, the Son of&nbsp;the Blessed?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>62&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus said,&nbsp;\u201cI am, and&nbsp;you will see the Son of Man&nbsp;seated at the right hand of Power, and&nbsp;coming with the clouds of heaven.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>63&nbsp;<\/sup>And the high priest&nbsp;tore his garments and said, \u201cWhat further witnesses do we need?&nbsp;<sup>64&nbsp;<\/sup>You have heard&nbsp;his blasphemy. What is your decision?\u201d And they&nbsp;all condemned him as&nbsp;deserving death.&nbsp;<sup>65&nbsp;<\/sup>And some began&nbsp;to spit on him and&nbsp;to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, \u201cProphesy!\u201d And the guards received him&nbsp;with blows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peter Denies Jesus<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>66&nbsp;<\/sup>And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,&nbsp;<sup>67&nbsp;<\/sup>and seeing Peter&nbsp;warming himself, she looked at him and said, \u201cYou also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>68&nbsp;<\/sup>But he denied it, saying, \u201cI neither know nor understand what you mean.\u201d And he went out into the gateway&nbsp;and&nbsp;the rooster crowed.&nbsp;<sup>69&nbsp;<\/sup>And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, \u201cThis man is one of them.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>70&nbsp;<\/sup>But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, \u201cCertainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>71&nbsp;<\/sup>But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, \u201cI do not know this man of whom you speak.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>72&nbsp;<\/sup>And immediately the rooster crowed&nbsp;a second time. What\nwould you have done if you were one of his disciples? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many\nbiblical scholars believe Mark\u2019s Gospel relied heavily on the eyewitness\naccount of Peter. Imagine Peter sharing his worse moments with Mark. Notice the\ncontrast between our Savior, the perfect Son of God, doing exactly what He said\nHe would do, and Peter, a sinful man, doing exactly what he said he would NOT\ndo. Put your trust in the never changing, always truthful character of our\nLord.
