{"id":346,"date":"2020-03-29T01:00:24","date_gmt":"2020-03-29T07:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=346"},"modified":"2020-03-28T13:57:59","modified_gmt":"2020-03-28T19:57:59","slug":"mark-march-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/mark-march-29\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Chapter 8"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Day 8: March 29, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 8 contains some of the most popular accounts of Jesus\u2019 ministry: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the feeding of the 4000 (a\ndifferent, but similar account to the feeding of the 5000, which by the way is\nthe only miracle found in all 4 gospels)<\/li><li>the healing of a blind man<\/li><li>Peter confessing Jesus as\nthe Christ (Greek for Messiah)<\/li><li>Jesus rebuking Peter as the\nSatan<\/li><li>Jesus\u2019 command to deny,\ntake up and follow.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, allow me to highlight the seemingly lesser elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Jesus was constantly frustrated with the Pharisees\u2013\u2013in this case, seeking a sign. Jesus did not come to impress mankind so we will follow Him, but to seek and save the lost sheep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, the disciples\nFORGOT to bring bread! We never talk about this, but Jesus turns it around to\nbe a teachable moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Third, when Jesus heals the blind man, he had\nto do it in two stages. Perhaps He was paralleling the previous and following\naccounts (v.14ff &amp; v.31ff) when the disciples were shown something, they\nhad a warped view of it, and needed a second \u201ctouch\u201d from Jesus to get things\ncleared up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-10111f0 ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-10111f0-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}.ugb-10111f0-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-10111f0-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-10111f0-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mark 8<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them,&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cI have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat.&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>And his disciples answered him, \u201cHow can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>And he asked them,&nbsp;\u201cHow many loaves do you have?\u201d&nbsp;They said,&nbsp;\u201cSeven.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and&nbsp;having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And they had a few small fish. And&nbsp;having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over,&nbsp;seven baskets full.&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>And immediately he got into&nbsp;the boat with his disciples and went to the district of&nbsp;Dalmanutha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pharisees Demand a Sign<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>The Pharisees came and began to argue with him,&nbsp;seeking from him&nbsp;a sign from heaven&nbsp;to test him.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;he sighed deeply&nbsp;in his spirit and said,&nbsp;\u201cWhy does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>And he cautioned them, saying,&nbsp;\u201cWatch out;&nbsp;beware of&nbsp;the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of&nbsp;Herod.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;Jesus, aware of this, said to them,&nbsp;\u201cWhy are you discussing the fact that you have no bread?&nbsp;Do you not yet perceive&nbsp;or understand?&nbsp;Are your hearts hardened?&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember?&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>When I broke&nbsp;the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?\u201d&nbsp;They said to him, \u201cTwelve.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cAnd&nbsp;the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?\u201d&nbsp;And they said to him, \u201cSeven.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cDo you not yet understand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>And they came&nbsp;to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when&nbsp;he had&nbsp;spit on his eyes and&nbsp;laid his hands on him, he asked him,&nbsp;\u201cDo you see anything?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And he looked up and said, \u201cI see people, but they look like trees, walking.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Jesus&nbsp;laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>And he sent him to his home, saying,&nbsp;\u201cDo not even enter the village.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples,&nbsp;\u201cWho do people say that I am?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>And they told him,&nbsp;\u201cJohn the Baptist; and others say,&nbsp;Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>And he asked them,&nbsp;\u201cBut who do you say that I am?\u201d&nbsp;Peter answered him,&nbsp;\u201cYou are&nbsp;the Christ.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>And he began to teach them that&nbsp;the Son of Man must&nbsp;suffer many things and&nbsp;be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and&nbsp;after three days rise again.&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said this&nbsp;plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said,&nbsp;\u201cGet behind me, Satan! For you&nbsp;are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cIf anyone would come after me, let him&nbsp;deny himself and&nbsp;take up his cross and follow me.&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;whoever would save his life&nbsp;will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake&nbsp;and the gospel&#8217;s will save it.&nbsp;<sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?&nbsp;<sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;what can a man give in return for his soul?&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this&nbsp;adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed&nbsp;when he comes in the glory of his Father with&nbsp;the holy angels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#ededed\" class=\"has-background\">The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae (ESV\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-490f10b ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-490f10b hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-490f10b .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My final lesser element is\nseen in Jesus\u2019 teaching that we must lose our life, not just give it to Jesus\nfor death insurance. The implications are that in this life we have nothing to\nlose because we are dead (and already gained everything we will ever need)! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No virus, stock market\ndrop, job loss, nor loss of normalcy means anything to the dead. We are not our\nown; we\u2019ve been bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). In times like these,\nwhat are ways can we show we are not ashamed of Jesus, but that we trust Him on\nall points?
