{"id":342,"date":"2020-03-28T01:00:55","date_gmt":"2020-03-28T07:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=342"},"modified":"2020-03-28T13:55:17","modified_gmt":"2020-03-28T19:55:17","slug":"mark-march-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/mark-march-28\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Chapter 7"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Day 7: March 28, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scribes and the\nPharisees had a bad habit of \u201cworshipping\u201d man\u2019s traditions and outward\nsuperstitions. Jesus called them hypocrites (Greek for \u201cactor\u201d) and took the\nopportunity to teach on worthy worship: honoring God, not man. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defilement does <strong>not<\/strong>\ncome from what we see and hear, but is instead manifested in the evil we <em>do<\/em>\nand how we <em>act<\/em>. On the other hand, when we worship and focus on God, we\nshow compassion and love! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, when Jesus\nheals the deaf man, this Gentile could hear the Words of Life, and he could not\nstop worshipping in spirit and truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-73636bd ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-73636bd-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}.ugb-73636bd-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-73636bd-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-73636bd-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mark 7<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traditions and Commandments<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes&nbsp;who had come from Jerusalem,&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were&nbsp;defiled, that is, unwashed.&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,&nbsp;holding to&nbsp;the tradition of&nbsp;the elders,&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.&nbsp;And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as&nbsp;the washing of&nbsp;cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.)&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, \u201cWhy do your disciples not walk according to&nbsp;the tradition of&nbsp;the elders,&nbsp;but eat with&nbsp;defiled hands?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cWell did Isaiah prophesy of you&nbsp;hypocrites, as it is written,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018This people honors me with their lips,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;but their heart is far from me;<br><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>in vain do they worship me,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;teaching as&nbsp;doctrines the commandments of men.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cYou have a fine way of&nbsp;rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>For Moses said,&nbsp;\u2018Honor your father and your mother\u2019; and,&nbsp;\u2018Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>But you say, \u2018If a man tells his father or his mother, \u201cWhatever you would have gained from me is Corban\u201d\u2019 (that is, given to God)\u2014&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>thus&nbsp;making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Defiles a Person<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>And he called the people to him again and said to them,&nbsp;\u201cHear me, all of you, and understand:&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>And when he had entered&nbsp;the house and left the people,&nbsp;his disciples asked him about the parable.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cThen&nbsp;are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>since it enters not his heart&nbsp;but his stomach, and is expelled?\u201d&nbsp;(Thus he declared all foods clean.)&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said,&nbsp;\u201cWhat comes out of a person is what defiles him.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft,&nbsp;murder, adultery,&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>coveting, wickedness, deceit,&nbsp;sensuality,&nbsp;envy,&nbsp;slander,&nbsp;pride,&nbsp;foolishness.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Syrophoenician Woman&#8217;s Faith<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.&nbsp;And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>Now the woman was a&nbsp;Gentile,&nbsp;a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to her,&nbsp;\u201cLet the children be&nbsp;fed first, for it is not right to take the children&#8217;s bread and&nbsp;throw it to the dogs.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>But she answered him, \u201cYes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children&#8217;s&nbsp;crumbs.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to her,&nbsp;\u201cFor this statement you may&nbsp;go your way; the demon has left your daughter.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Heals a Deaf Man<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to&nbsp;the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the&nbsp;Decapolis.&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>And they brought to him&nbsp;a man who was deaf and&nbsp;had a speech impediment, and they begged him to&nbsp;lay his hand on him.&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and&nbsp;after spitting touched his tongue.&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;looking up to heaven,&nbsp;he sighed and said to him,&nbsp;\u201cEphphatha,\u201d&nbsp;that is,&nbsp;\u201cBe opened.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.&nbsp;<sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;Jesus&nbsp;charged them to tell no one. But&nbsp;the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.&nbsp;<sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>And they were&nbsp;astonished beyond measure, saying, \u201cHe has done all things well.
