What do you notice about their location? What kind of place are they in? How does Jesus view the crowd? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands?&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>Is not this&nbsp;the carpenter, the son of Mary and&nbsp;brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?\u201d And&nbsp;they took offense at him.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus said to them,&nbsp;\u201cA prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;he could do no mighty work there, except that&nbsp;he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;he marveled because of their unbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he went about among the villages teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff\u2014no bread, no bag, no money in their belts\u2014&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>but to&nbsp;wear sandals and not put on two tunics.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cWhenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave,&nbsp;shake off the dust that is on your feet&nbsp;as a testimony against them.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>So they went out and&nbsp;proclaimed&nbsp;that people should repent.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And they cast out many demons and&nbsp;anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Death of John the Baptist<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>King Herod heard of it, for Jesus&#8217;&nbsp;name had become known. Some&nbsp;said,&nbsp;\u201cJohn the Baptist&nbsp;has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>But others said, \u201cHe is Elijah.\u201d And others said, \u201cHe is&nbsp;a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>But when Herod heard of it, he said, \u201cJohn, whom I beheaded, has been raised.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and&nbsp;bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip&#8217;s wife, because he had married her.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>For John had been saying to Herod,&nbsp;\u201cIt is not lawful for you to have your brother&#8217;s wife.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not,&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>for Herod&nbsp;feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he&nbsp;heard him gladly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>But an opportunity came when Herod&nbsp;on his birthday&nbsp;gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>For when Herodias&#8217;s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, \u201cAsk me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>And he vowed to her, \u201cWhatever you ask me, I will give you,&nbsp;up to half of my kingdom.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And she went out and said to her mother, \u201cFor what should I ask?\u201d And she said, \u201cThe head of John the Baptist.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, \u201cI want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her.&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John&#8217;s&nbsp;head. He went and beheaded him in the prison&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>When his&nbsp;disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.&nbsp;<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cCome away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.\u201d&nbsp;For many were coming and going, and&nbsp;they had no leisure even to eat.&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>And they went away in&nbsp;the boat to a desolate place by themselves.&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>Now many saw them going and&nbsp;recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>When he went ashore he&nbsp;saw a great crowd, and&nbsp;he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, \u201cThis is a desolate place, and the hour is now late.&nbsp;<sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>But he answered them,&nbsp;\u201cYou give them something to eat.\u201d&nbsp;And&nbsp;they said to him,&nbsp;\u201cShall we go and buy two hundred denarii&nbsp;worth of bread and give it to them to eat?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cHow many loaves do you have? Go and see.\u201d&nbsp;And when they had found out, they said,&nbsp;\u201cFive, and two fish.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.&nbsp;<sup>41&nbsp;<\/sup>And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he&nbsp;looked up to heaven and&nbsp;said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all.&nbsp;<sup>42&nbsp;<\/sup>And they all ate and were satisfied.&nbsp;<sup>43&nbsp;<\/sup>And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.&nbsp;<sup>44&nbsp;<\/sup>And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Walks on the Water<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>45&nbsp;<\/sup>Immediately he&nbsp;made his disciples get into&nbsp;the boat and go before him to the other side,&nbsp;to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.&nbsp;<sup>46&nbsp;<\/sup>And after he had taken leave of them,&nbsp;he went up on the mountain to pray.&nbsp;<sup>47&nbsp;<\/sup>And when&nbsp;evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.&nbsp;<sup>48&nbsp;<\/sup>And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about&nbsp;the fourth watch of the night&nbsp;he came to them, walking on the sea.&nbsp;He meant to pass by them,&nbsp;<sup>49&nbsp;<\/sup>but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out,&nbsp;<sup>50&nbsp;<\/sup>for they all saw him and&nbsp;were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said,&nbsp;\u201cTake heart; it is I.&nbsp;Do not be afraid.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>51&nbsp;<\/sup>And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded,&nbsp;<sup>52&nbsp;<\/sup>for&nbsp;they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts&nbsp;were hardened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>53&nbsp;<\/sup>When they had crossed over, they came to land at&nbsp;Gennesaret and moored to the shore.&nbsp;<sup>54&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately&nbsp;recognized him&nbsp;<sup>55&nbsp;<\/sup>and ran about the whole region and began to bring&nbsp;the sick people&nbsp;on their beds to wherever they heard he was.&nbsp;<sup>56&nbsp;<\/sup>And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside,&nbsp;they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even&nbsp;the fringe of his garment. And&nbsp;as many as touched it were made well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#ededed\" class=\"has-background\">The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae (ESV\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-7224f98 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-7224f98 hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-7224f98 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you notice that Jesus, his disciples, and the crowd are in a&nbsp;<em>desolate<\/em>&nbsp;place? Here\u2019s the definition for desolate:&nbsp;<em>deserted of people and in a state of bleak and dismal emptiness.<\/em>&nbsp;What is Jesus doing here? If you remember, this isn\u2019t the first time we\u2019ve seen Jesus going to desolate places. He went to a desolate place to be alone with the Father and pray in 1:35. Then, people come to&nbsp;<em>him<\/em>&nbsp;in the desolate place to hear his teachings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, we have Jesus calling his disciples to a&nbsp;<em>desolate place<\/em>&nbsp;to rest. People see where they\u2019re going, the great crowd shows up and Jesus has<em>compassion<\/em>&nbsp;on them. The same compassion Jesus has for people today. The disciples question and doubt that Jesus can provide these people (v.35) \u2026 after all, they\u2019re in a&nbsp;<em>desolate place<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus, though, turns the&nbsp;<em>desolate place<\/em>&nbsp;into a place of&nbsp;<em>abundance<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>satisfaction<\/em>&nbsp;(vv.42-43)! Jesus does some of his greatest work in&nbsp;<em>desolate places<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you in a desolate place right now? Jesus went to those places: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To pray! <\/li><li>To provide abundance and satisfaction.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you commit to prayer and looking for satisfaction in Jesus alone during this time?
