{"id":301,"date":"2020-03-23T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=301"},"modified":"2020-03-24T23:01:59","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T05:01:59","slug":"mark-march-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/mark-march-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Chapter 2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Day 2: <\/strong><em>March 23, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this passage, we see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Jesus moving to forgive sins and heal in response to faith <em>(v.1-12)<\/em><\/li><li>Eating with the socially unacceptable of his day <em>(v.13-17)<\/em><\/li><li>Answering objections about the way he and his disciples were doing things <em>(v.18-22)<\/em><\/li><li>Claiming authority over the Sabbath day <em>(v.23-28)<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice that when he heals the paralytic, his first response to the faith of the friends is not to grant him physical healing: Jesus knows that the man\u2019s true need is far deeper than that, and instead tells him that his sins are forgiven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The faith of the paralytic\u2019s friends moved the heart of Jesus on their friend\u2019s behalf, and our faith can move God\u2019s heart on behalf of others as well! Unlike the friends in this passage, it isn\u2019t a matter of us getting people to Jesus; we are the body of Christ, so now it is a matter of us <strong>getting Jesus to people!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-90646ec ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-90646ec-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}.ugb-90646ec-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-90646ec-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-90646ec-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mark 2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Heals a Paralytic<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>And when he returned to&nbsp;Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they could not get near him because of the crowd,&nbsp;they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>And when Jesus&nbsp;saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,&nbsp;\u201cSon,&nbsp;your sins are forgiven.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWhy does this man speak like that?&nbsp;He is blaspheming!&nbsp;Who can forgive sins but God alone?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And immediately Jesus,&nbsp;perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them,&nbsp;\u201cWhy do you question these things in your hearts?&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, \u2018Your sins are forgiven,\u2019 or to say, \u2018Rise, take up your bed and walk\u2019?&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>But that you may know that&nbsp;the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins\u201d\u2014he said to the paralytic\u2014&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cI say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and&nbsp;glorified God, saying, \u201cWe never saw anything like this!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Calls Levi<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>He went out again beside the sea, and&nbsp;all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>And as he passed by, he saw&nbsp;Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him,&nbsp;\u201cFollow me.\u201d&nbsp;And he rose and followed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>And as he reclined at table in his house, many&nbsp;tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;the scribes of&nbsp;the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples,&nbsp;\u201cWhy does he eat&nbsp;with tax collectors and sinners?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>And when Jesus heard it, he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cThose who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.&nbsp;I came not to call the righteous,&nbsp;but sinners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Question About Fasting<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>Now&nbsp;John&#8217;s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him,&nbsp;\u201cWhy do John&#8217;s disciples and&nbsp;the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus said to them,&nbsp;\u201cCan the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and&nbsp;then they will fast in that day.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>And no one puts new wine into old&nbsp;wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins\u2014and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples&nbsp;began to pluck heads of grain.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Pharisees were saying to him, \u201cLook,&nbsp;why are they doing&nbsp;what is not lawful on the Sabbath?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cHave you never read&nbsp;what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him:&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>how he entered the house of God, in the time of&nbsp;Abiathar the high priest, and ate&nbsp;the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cThe Sabbath was made for man,&nbsp;not man for the Sabbath.&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>So&nbsp;the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#ededed\" class=\"has-background\">The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae (ESV\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-a66dff0 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-a66dff0 hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-a66dff0 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How might you use this time as an opportunity to bring Jesus to your family and your neighbors?
