For it is written, \u2018I will&nbsp;strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.\u2019<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>But after I am raised up,&nbsp;I will go before you to Galilee.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>Peter answered him, \u201cThough they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>Jesus said to him,&nbsp;\u201cTruly, I tell you, this very night,&nbsp;before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>Peter said to him, \u201cEven if I must die with you, I will not deny you!\u201d And all the disciples said the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Prays in Gethsemane<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus went with them\u00a0to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples,\u00a0\u201cSit here, while I go over there and pray.\u201d\u00a0<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>And taking with him\u00a0Peter and\u00a0the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.\u00a0<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>Then he said to them,\u00a0\u201cMy soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and\u00a0watch with me.\u201d\u00a0<sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>And going a little farther he fell on his face\u00a0and prayed, saying,\u00a0\u201cMy Father, if it be possible, let\u00a0this cup pass from me;\u00a0nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.\u201d\u00a0<sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter,\u00a0\u201cSo, could you not watch with me one hour?\u00a0<sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>Watch and\u00a0pray that you\u00a0may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.\u201d<sup>42\u00a0<\/sup>Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed,\u00a0\u201cMy Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it,\u00a0your will be done.\u201d\u00a0<sup>43\u00a0<\/sup>And again he came and found them sleeping, for\u00a0their eyes were heavy.\u00a0<sup>44\u00a0<\/sup>So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for\u00a0the third time, saying the same words again.\u00a0<sup>45\u00a0<\/sup>Then he came to the disciples and said to them,\u00a0\u201cSleep and take your rest later on.\u00a0See,\u00a0the hour is at hand, and\u00a0the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.\u00a0<sup>46\u00a0<\/sup>Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>47\u00a0<\/sup>While he was still speaking,\u00a0Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.<sup>48\u00a0<\/sup>Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, \u201cThe one I will kiss is the man; seize him.\u201d\u00a0<sup>49\u00a0<\/sup>And he came up to Jesus at once and said, \u201cGreetings,\u00a0Rabbi!\u201d And he kissed him.\u00a0<sup>50\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to him,\u00a0\u201cFriend,\u00a0do what you came to do.\u201d\u00a0Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.\u00a0<sup>51\u00a0<\/sup>And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his\u00a0sword and struck the servant\u00a0of the high priest and cut off his ear.\u00a0<sup>52\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus said to him,\u00a0\u201cPut your sword back into its place. For\u00a0all who take the sword will perish by the sword.<sup>53\u00a0<\/sup>Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me\u00a0more than twelve\u00a0legions of angels?\u00a0<sup>54\u00a0<\/sup>But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?\u201d\u00a0<sup>55\u00a0<\/sup>At that hour Jesus said to the crowds,\u00a0\u201cHave you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? In a garden, in the darkness of night, Jesus is left without His followers and closest friends. He is left alone to endure the coming hours of trials, beatings, mocking, and, eventually, the cross\u2014alone, with no one to stand up for Him or stand with Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Garden of Eden was where betrayal against God started, and now, in the Garden of Gethsemane, betrayal and abandonment against Jesus fulfill prophecy, revealing He is our awaited Redeemer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just hours before the arrest of Jesus and the scattering of His disciples into the night, Peter boldly proclaimed that even if all the others left Him, he never would. He would die for Jesus. Where is Peter now? Where are the others who claimed they loved Him, who saw firsthand the miracles and signs of the promised Messiah? Where is their faith in their Lord? Fear overcame their faith\u2014but only for a moment in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had just told them, \u201cWatch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.\u202fThe spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak\u201d (Matthew 26:41). Yet they slept while He prayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even when Jesus knew what was coming\u2014the betrayal, the abandonment, the trials, torture, and crucifixion\u2014He was thinking of His disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He gave them a final encouragement: \u201cBut after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee\u201d (Matthew 26:32).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They would see Him again. He would rise from the dead. Their faith would be restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you think you\u2019ve lost your faith in your Lord and Savior, Jesus, look for encouragement in His Word. Not all is lost in the darkness. Fear cannot steal your faith. It is only the beginning of the end. We will see Jesus again. No matter how dark it gets, watch and pray.
