He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel,&nbsp;tied it around his waist.&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>Then he&nbsp;poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples&#8217; feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>When he had washed their feet and&nbsp;put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cDo you understand what I have done to you?&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>You call me&nbsp;Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,&nbsp;you also ought to wash one another&#8217;s feet.&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>For I have given you an example,&nbsp;that you also should do just as I have done to you.<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>Truly, truly, I say to you,&nbsp;a servant&nbsp;is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>If you know these things,&nbsp;blessed are you if you do them.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>I am not speaking of all of you; I know&nbsp;whom I have chosen. But&nbsp;the Scripture will be fulfilled,&nbsp;\u2018He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>Truly, truly, I say to you,&nbsp;whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One of You Will Betray Me<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>After saying these things,\u00a0Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified,\u00a0\u201cTruly, truly, I say to you,\u00a0one of you will betray me.\u201d\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke.\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table\u00a0at Jesus&#8217; side,\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus\u00a0of whom he was speaking.\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>So that disciple,\u00a0leaning back against Jesus, said to him, \u201cLord, who is it?\u201d\u00a0<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cIt is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread\u00a0when I have dipped it.\u201d\u00a0So when he had dipped the morsel,\u00a0he gave it to Judas,\u00a0the son of Simon Iscariot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zechariah 11:12-13<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Then I said to them, \u201cIf it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.\u201d And they weighed out as my wages\u00a0thirty pieces of silver.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Then the\u00a0Lord said to me, \u201cThrow it to the potter\u201d\u2014the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the\u00a0thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the\u00a0Lord, to the potter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Matthew 26:14-16<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>Then one of the twelve, whose name was&nbsp;Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>and said, \u201cWhat will you give me if I deliver him over to you?\u201d And they&nbsp;paid him&nbsp;thirty pieces of silver.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>And from that moment he sought an opportunity&nbsp;to betray him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. But this verse also points ahead to Jesus, who was betrayed by one of His closest followers\u2014Judas Iscariot. In ancient times, sharing a meal was a sign of friendship and trust. The act of eating together was more than just a physical necessity; it established bonds of loyalty. To turn against someone after breaking bread together was one of the deepest betrayals imaginable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Centuries later, in John 13:18, after Jesus and His disciples had shared the Passover meal\u2014the Last Supper\u2014and He had washed their feet, Jesus quotes this very passage, saying: <em>&#8220;The one who eats my bread has raised his heel against me.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus knew what was coming. He wasn\u2019t caught off guard by Judas\u2019 betrayal; instead, He saw it as part of God\u2019s plan. The phrase <em>\u201craised his heel\u201d<\/em> suggests a deep act of treachery\u2014like someone preparing to strike. Yet, even knowing what Judas would do, Jesus still washed his feet and shared a meal with him. This moment shows Jesus\u2019 incredible love and obedience to God\u2019s plan, even in the face of betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zechariah foretells the exact price for which Jesus would be betrayed\u2014thirty pieces of silver. This detail is directly connected to the moment in Matthew\u2019s Gospel when Judas makes his fateful decision, unknowingly fulfilling what had been written centuries earlier. Even more striking, the prophecy describes the silver being thrown into the temple and used to buy a potter\u2019s field\u2014precisely what happens after Judas, overcome with regret, returns the money (Matthew 27:3-5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The betrayal of Jesus by a trusted friend set into motion a series of events\u2014rejection, false accusations, humiliation, and unimaginable suffering.
