Pilate said to them,\u00a0\u201cBehold the man!\u201d When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, \u201cCrucify him, crucify him!\u201d Pilate said to them,\u00a0\u201cTake him yourselves and crucify him, for\u00a0I find no guilt in him.&#8221; The Jews\u00a0answered him, \u201cWe have a law, and\u00a0according to that law he ought to die because\u00a0he has made himself the Son of God.\u201d\u00a0When Pilate heard this statement,\u00a0he was even more afraid. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus,\u00a0ch. 7:27\u00a0\u201cWhere are you from?\u201d But\u00a0Jesus gave him no answer. So Pilate said to him, \u201cYou will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?\u201d Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cYou would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore\u00a0he who delivered me over to you\u00a0has the greater sin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From then on\u00a0Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, \u201cIf you release this man, you are not Caesar\u2019s friend.\u00a0Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.&#8221; So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on\u00a0the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic\u00a0Gabbatha. Now it was\u00a0the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.\u00a0He said to the Jews,\u00a0\u201cBehold your King!.&#8221; They cried out,\u00a0\u201cAway with him, away with him, crucify him!\u201d Pilate said to them, \u201cShall I crucify your King?\u201d The chief priests answered, \u201cWe have no king but Caesar.&#8221; So he\u00a0delivered him over to them to be crucified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Crucifixion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So they took Jesus, and\u00a0he went out,\u00a0bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate\u00a0also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, \u201cJesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.&#8221; Many of the Jews read this inscription, for\u00a0the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, \u201cDo not write, \u2018The King of the Jews,\u2019 but rather, \u2018This man said, I am King of the Jews.\u2019\u201d Pilate answered,\u00a0\u201cWhat I have written I have written.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.\u00a0But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom,\u00a0so they said to one another, \u201cLet us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.\u201d\u00a0This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey divided my garments among them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and for my clothing they cast lots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the soldiers did these things,\u00a0but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother\u2019s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and\u00a0the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother,\u00a0\u201cWoman, behold, your son!\u201d Then he said to the disciple,\u00a0\u201cBehold, your mother!\u201d\u00a0And from that hour the disciple took her to\u00a0his own home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Death of Jesus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now\u00a0finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture),\u00a0\u201cI thirst.\u201d A jar full of sour wine stood there,\u00a0so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said,\u00a0\u201cIt is finished,\u201d\u00a0and he bowed his head and\u00a0gave up his spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus\u2019 Side Is Pierced<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it was\u00a0the day of Preparation, and\u00a0so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was\u00a0a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other\u00a0who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out\u00a0blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness\u2014his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth\u2014that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled:\u00a0\u201cNot one of his bones\u00a0will be broken.\u201d And again another Scripture says,\u00a0\u201cThey will look on him whom they have pierced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus Is Buried<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly\u00a0for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus\u00a0by night, came\u00a0bringing a mixture of\u00a0myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds\u00a0in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and\u00a0bound it in\u00a0linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. The garden in today\u2019s text is no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John 19 is the darkest text in all of Scripture, yet even here our eyes are drawn to a garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I read these verses, I sense no accident in the authors\u2019 choice to describe a garden in verse 41\u2014this detail, rich with meaning, connects the past, the present, and the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Look back and see Eden. <\/strong>Here, humanity\u2019s story began in fellowship with God. Eden symbolized life, beauty, and abundance, yet, it was there that sin first cast its shadow upon humanity. Once a place of unadulterated communion with God, Eden now marked the beginning of separation from God. Adam and Eve were then driven out, and death was introduced into humanity\u2019s story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Look around and see the tomb, surrounded by a garden <\/strong>(John 19:41). Though death reigns within the tomb, life slowly awakens around it. The garden continues quietly germinating\u2014waiting, growing, preparing to burst forth in all its fullness, just as Jesus\u2019 victory over death will soon bring eternal life to all who believe. The garden symbolizes life\u2019s quiet resilience, despite death\u2019s dark shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Look forward and see the coming garden.<\/strong> This one symbolizing a future restoration, when Eden will be renewed and God\u2019s people will dwell with Him forever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as the tomb stands as a somber symbol of death, the garden quietly whispers of a hopeful ending that is coming. In Christ, life awakens again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How does the presence of a garden at the site of Jesus\u2019 death subtly communicate God\u2019s redemptive plan? One of his most well-known was to the disciples when they traveled to Caesarea Phillippi. There, surrounded by idol worship of all kinds, Jesus asked, \u201cWho do people say that I am? (Matt. 16:13). He quickly follows it up with another question directed to each of the disciples, \u201cBut who do you say that I am?
