So, if you seek me, let these men go.\u201d\u00a0This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken:\u00a0\u201cOf those whom you gave me I have lost not one.\u201d Then Simon Peter,\u00a0having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest\u2019s servant\u00a0and cut off his right ear. (The servant\u2019s name was Malchus.)\u00a0So Jesus said to Peter,\u00a0\u201cPut your sword into its sheath;\u00a0shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews\u00a0arrested Jesus and bound him.\u00a0First they\u00a0led him to\u00a0Annas, for he was the father-in-law of\u00a0Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews\u00a0that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Peter Denies Jesus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. The servant girl at the door said to Peter, \u201cYou also are not one of this man\u2019s disciples, are you?\u201d He said, \u201cI am not.&#8221; Now the servants\u00a0and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves.\u00a0Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The High Priest Questions Jesus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cI have spoken\u00a0openly\u00a0to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together.\u00a0I have said nothing in secret. Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.\u201d When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying,\u00a0\u201cIs that how you answer the high priest?&#8221; Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cIf what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?\u201d\u00a0Annas then sent him bound to\u00a0Caiaphas the high priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Peter Denies Jesus Again<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, \u201cYou also are not one of his disciples, are you?\u201d He denied it and said, \u201cI am not.&#8221; One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of\u00a0the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, \u201cDid I not see you\u00a0in the garden with him?&#8221; Peter again denied it, and\u00a0at once a rooster crowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus Before Pilate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then they led Jesus\u00a0from the house of Caiaphas to\u00a0the governor\u2019s headquarters.\u00a0It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor\u2019s headquarters,\u00a0so that they would not be defiled,\u00a0but could eat the Passover. So Pilate went outside to them and said, \u201cWhat accusation do you bring against this man?&#8221; They answered him, \u201cIf this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.&#8221; Pilate said to them,\u00a0\u201cTake him yourselves and judge him by your own law.\u201d The Jews said to him, \u201cIt is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.&#8221; This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken\u00a0to show by what kind of death he was going to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My Kingdom Is Not of This World<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him,\u00a0\u201cAre you the King of the Jews?&#8221; Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cDo you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?\u201dPilate answered, \u201cAm I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?\u201d Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cMy kingdom\u00a0is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world,\u00a0my servants would have been fighting, that\u00a0I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.&#8221; Then Pilate said to him, \u201cSo you are a king?\u201d Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cYou say that I am a king.\u00a0For this purpose I was born and for this purpose\u00a0I have come into the world\u2014to bear witness to the truth.\u00a0Everyone who is\u00a0of the truth\u00a0listens to my voice.\u201d\u00a0Pilate said to him, \u201cWhat is truth?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After he had said this,\u00a0he went back outside to the Jews and told them,\u00a0\u201cI find no guilt in him. But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. The ESV may not be translated in whole or in part into any other language.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Devotional<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John 18 presents a clear distinction between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world as the actions of Jesus are contrasted with those of Peter and the Jews who want to kill Him. When Jesus is betrayed by Judas, Peter\u2019s short-sightedness leads him to be a hindrance to God&#8217;s plans, but Jesus&#8217; eternal perspective leads Him to willingly hand Himself over to His persecutors. When Jesus is taken to court, Peter hides from and denies any association with Him, while Jesus openly and truthfully speaks about His identity to His accusers. While the Jews are persistent in calling for the crucifixion of their God and Creator, Jesus is persistently willing to be the King who dies for His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the many contrasts presented in this chapter, here are some Kingdom characteristics that can be gleaned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>God\u2019s Kingdom is an eternal one; therefore, those who are in His Kingdom have an eternal perspective on this Earth. (John 18:11)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God is the source of truth; therefore, those in His Kingdom carry and believe in that truth. (John 18:20-21)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In God\u2019s Kingdom, Jesus is King, and anyone in His Kingdom is His servant. A King\u2019s servants always follow and recognize the reign of their King. (John 18:17-18, 25-27, 36-37)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>John 18 causes its readers to pause and reflect on which Kingdom they are a part of. If you are a follower of Jesus, you are in God\u2019s Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In what ways have I allowed the pleasures and problems of the world to make me short-sighted? How can I reframe my perspective so that I\u2019m placing my hope in eternity with Jesus?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-f0575d6 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\"><style>.ugb-f0575d6 hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-f0575d6 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jesus asked hundreds of questions during his earthly ministry. One of his most well-known was to the disciples when they traveled to Caesarea Phillippi. There, surrounded by idol worship of all kinds, Jesus asked, \u201cWho do people say that I am? (Matt. 16:13). He quickly follows it up with another question directed to each of the disciples, \u201cBut who do you say that I am?
