Indeed,\u00a0the hour is coming when\u00a0whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.\u00a0And they will do these things\u00a0because they have not known the Father, nor me. But\u00a0I have said these things to you, that when\u00a0their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Work of the Holy Spirit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI did not say these things to you from the beginning,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0because I was with you. But now\u00a0I am going to him who sent me, and\u00a0none of you asks me, \u2018Where are you going?&#8217; But because I have said these things to you,\u00a0sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for\u00a0if I do not go away,\u00a0the Helper will not come to you. But\u00a0if\u00a0I go,\u00a0I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will\u00a0convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:\u00a0\u00a0concerning sin,\u00a0because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness,\u00a0because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world\u00a0is judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.\u00a0When\u00a0the Spirit of truth comes,\u00a0he will\u00a0guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but\u00a0whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.\u00a0He will\u00a0glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine;\u00a0therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA little while, and you will see me no longer; and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0again a little while, and you will see me.&#8221; So\u00a0some of his disciples said to one another, \u201cWhat is this that he says to us,\u00a0\u2018A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me\u2019;\u00a0and,\u00a0\u2018because I am going to the Father\u2019?\u201d So they were saying, \u201cWhat does he mean by\u00a0\u2018a little while\u2019?\u00a0We do not know what he is talking about.\u201d Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them,\u00a0\u201cIs this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, \u2018A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me\u2019? Truly, truly, I say to you,\u00a0you will weep and lament, but\u00a0the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but\u00a0your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also you have sorrow now, but\u00a0I will see you again, and\u00a0your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. In that day you will\u00a0ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you,\u00a0whatever you ask of the Father in my name,\u00a0he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name.\u00a0Ask, and you will receive,\u00a0that your joy may be full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I Have Overcome the World<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have said these things to you in figures of speech.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.\u00a0In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf;\u00a0for the Father himself loves you, because\u00a0you have loved me and\u00a0have believed that I came from God.\u00a0I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now\u00a0I am leaving the world and going to the Father.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His disciples said, \u201cAh, now you are speaking plainly and not\u00a0using figurative speech!\u00a0Now we know that\u00a0you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that\u00a0you came from God.&#8221; Jesus answered them,\u00a0\u201cDo you now believe? Behold,\u00a0the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when\u00a0you will be scattered, each to his own home, and\u00a0will leave me alone.\u00a0Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that\u00a0in me you may have peace.\u00a0In the world you will have\u00a0tribulation. Jesus reveals that while His time on earth will be ending soon, the disciples will not be left to navigate life\u2019s concerns without His support. He tells them that He is sending a Helper. A Helper who will guide them into all truth (13).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I imagine that Jesus\u2019 words were confusing, surprising, and eventually, deeply encouraging. While the gift of the Spirit\u2019s help in our lives is the chief focus of this chapter, Jesus mentions three other \u2018gifts\u2019:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Joy<\/strong>: Jesus said our sorrows will turn to joy (vv. 20-24)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Love<\/strong>: Jesus said that our Heavenly Father loves us (vv. 26-28)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Peace<\/strong>: Jesus said our troubles can be faced with peace (vv. 32-33)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Aren\u2019t you grateful? Reading those three promises is like a cool drink of water on a hot, humid day. Jesus\u2019 final lessons focused on the reality that while life has sorrowful and troublesome seasons, through prayer, His joy, His love, and His peace can flourish in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus states (16:13) that the Spirit will guide us \u2018into all truth\u2019.
