During supper, when\u00a0the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon\u2019s son, to betray him,\u00a0Jesus, knowing\u00a0that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that\u00a0he had come from God and\u00a0was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel,\u00a0tied it around his waist. Then he\u00a0poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples\u2019 feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, \u201cLord, do you wash my feet?&#8221; Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cWhat I am doing\u00a0you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.&#8221; Peter said to him, \u201cYou shall never wash my feet.\u201d Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cIf I do not wash you, you have no share with me.&#8221; Simon Peter said to him, \u201cLord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!&#8221; Jesus said to him,\u00a0\u201cThe one who has bathed does not need to wash,\u00a0except for his feet,\u00a0\u00a0but is completely clean. And\u00a0you\u00a0\u00a0are clean,\u00a0but not every one of you.&#8221; For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said,\u00a0\u201cNot all of you are clean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he had washed their feet and\u00a0put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them,\u00a0\u201cDo you understand what I have done to you? You call me\u00a0Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,\u00a0you also ought to wash one another\u2019s feet.\u00a0\u00a0For I have given you an example,\u00a0that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you,\u00a0a servant\u00a0\u00a0is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things,\u00a0blessed are you if you do them. I am not speaking of all of you; I know\u00a0whom I have chosen. But\u00a0the Scripture will be fulfilled,\u2018He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.&#8217; I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he.\u00a0\u00a0Truly, truly, I say to you,\u00a0whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One of You Will Betray Me<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After saying these things,\u00a0Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified,\u00a0\u201cTruly, truly, I say to you,\u00a0one of you will betray me.&#8221; The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table\u00a0at Jesus\u2019 side, so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus\u00a0of whom he was speaking. So that disciple,\u00a0leaning back against Jesus, said to him, \u201cLord, who is it?&#8221; Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cIt is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread\u00a0when I have dipped it.\u201d\u00a0So when he had dipped the morsel,\u00a0he gave it to Judas,\u00a0the son of Simon Iscariot. Then after he had taken the morsel,\u00a0Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him,\u00a0\u201cWhat you are going to do, do quickly.&#8221; Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. Some thought that,\u00a0because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, \u201cBuy what we need\u00a0for the feast,\u201d or that he should\u00a0give something to the poor.\u00a0So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out.\u00a0And it was night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A New Commandment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he had gone out, Jesus said,\u00a0\u201cNow is the Son of Man glorified, and\u00a0God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him,\u00a0God will also glorify him in himself, and\u00a0glorify him at once. Little children,\u00a0yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just\u00a0as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, \u2018Where I am going you cannot come.&#8217; A new commandment\u00a0I give to you,\u00a0that you love one another:\u00a0just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus Foretells Peter\u2019s Denial<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon Peter said to him, \u201cLord, where are you going?\u201d\u00a0Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cWhere I am going\u00a0you cannot follow me now,\u00a0but you will follow afterward.&#8221; Peter said to him, \u201cLord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.&#8221; Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cWill you lay down your life for me? It is an unconditional, sacrificial love that implies fidelity and commitment\u2026 until the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fidelity and commitment were not evident in the lives of Judas and Peter after this last\u2014very emotional\u2014dinner. This dinner comes after 3 years together that were filled with supernatural events with God made flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We, too, could become like Judas or Peter. Agape love does not come naturally to us. Due to our fallen nature, we are incapable of producing that love on our own.
