So they gave a dinner for him there.\u00a0Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound\u00a0of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, \u201cWhy was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii\u00a0and\u00a0given to the poor?&#8221; He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and\u00a0having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Jesus said,\u00a0\u201cLeave her alone, so that she may keep it\u00a0\u00a0for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Plot to Kill Lazarus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus\u00a0was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus,\u00a0whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, because\u00a0on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Triumphal Entry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day\u00a0the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.\u00a0So they took branches of\u00a0palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out,\u00a0\u201cHosanna! Blessed is\u00a0he who comes in the name of the Lord, even\u00a0the King of Israel!\u201d\u00a0And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFear not, daughter of Zion;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>behold, your king is coming,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>sitting on a donkey\u2019s colt!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His disciples did not understand these things at first, but\u00a0when Jesus was glorified, then\u00a0they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him\u00a0was that they heard he had done this sign.\u00a0So the Pharisees said to one another,\u00a0\u201cYou see that you are gaining nothing. Look,\u00a0the world has gone after him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some Greeks Seek Jesus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now\u00a0among those who went up to worship at the feast were some\u00a0Greeks. So these came to\u00a0Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, \u201cSir, we wish to see Jesus.&#8221; Philip went and told\u00a0Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them,\u00a0\u201cThe hour has come\u00a0for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you,\u00a0unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.\u00a0Whoever loves his life loses it, and\u00a0whoever\u00a0hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.\u00a0If anyone serves me, he must\u00a0follow me; and\u00a0where I am, there will my servant be also.\u00a0If anyone serves me,\u00a0the Father will honor him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? \u2018Father,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0save me from\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this hour\u2019? But\u00a0for this purpose I have come to\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this hour. Father, glorify your name.\u201d\u00a0Then\u00a0a voice came from heaven: \u201cI have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.&#8221; The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said,\u00a0\u201cAn angel has spoken to him.&#8221; Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cThis voice has come for your sake, not mine.\u00a0\u00a0Now is the judgment of this world; now will\u00a0the ruler of this world\u00a0be cast out. And I,\u00a0when I am lifted up from the earth,\u00a0will draw\u00a0all people to myself.\u201d He said this\u00a0to show by what kind of death he was going to die. So the crowd answered him, \u201cWe have heard from the Law that\u00a0the Christ remains forever. How can you say that\u00a0the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?&#8221; So Jesus said to them,\u00a0\u201cThe light is among you\u00a0for a little while longer.\u00a0Walk while you have the light, lest darkness\u00a0overtake you.\u00a0The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become\u00a0sons of light.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Unbelief of the People<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLord, who has believed what he heard from us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore they\u00a0could not believe. For again Isaiah said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has blinded their eyes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and&nbsp;hardened their heart,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>lest they see with their eyes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and understand with their heart, and turn,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and I would heal them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isaiah said these things because\u00a0he saw his glory and\u00a0spoke of him. Nevertheless,\u00a0many even of the authorities believed in him, but\u00a0for fear of the Pharisees they did not\u00a0confess it, so that they would not be\u00a0put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus Came to Save the World<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Jesus cried out and said,\u00a0\u201cWhoever believes in me, believes not in me but\u00a0in him who sent me.\u00a0And\u00a0whoever\u00a0sees me sees him who sent me. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. If anyone\u00a0hears my words and does not keep them,\u00a0I do not judge him; for\u00a0I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge;\u00a0the word that I have spoken will judge him\u00a0on the last day. For\u00a0I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father\u00a0who sent me has himself given me\u00a0a commandment\u2014what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. John writes \u201c\u2026for they [unbelievers] loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.\u201d Lazarus glorified Jesus by seeking his presence, Martha glorified him through service, and Mary glorified him by anointing his feet. Most importantly, Jesus was glorified by The Father (v. 28).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glory will be given; the question is: Are we focused on bringing honor and adoration to King Jesus or to ourselves?\u00a0 There is a clear distinction in this passage between worldly value and spiritual value. If we are not careful, we can succumb to the pressure of prioritizing the things of this world which are here for a moment and gone the next. God desires followers whose hearts and affections are dedicated to his Kingdom.
