He did not want\u00a0to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.\u00a0But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near,\u00a0Jesus\u2019 brothers said to him, \u201cLeave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.\u00a0No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.\u201d\u00a0For even his own brothers did not believe in him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore Jesus told them,\u00a0\u201cMy time is not yet here; for you any time will do. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. You go to the festival. I am not\u00a0\u00a0going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.\u201d After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.\u00a0Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, \u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, \u201cHe is a good man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others replied, \u201cNo, he deceives the people.\u201d\u00a0But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus Teaches at the Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.\u00a0The Jews there were amazed and asked, \u201cHow did this man get such learning without having been taught?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cMy teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou are demon-possessed,\u201d the crowd answered. \u201cWho is trying to kill you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus said to them,\u00a0\u201cI did one miracle, and you are all amazed. Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man\u2019s whole body on the Sabbath? Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Division Over Who Jesus Is<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, \u201cIsn\u2019t this the man they are trying to kill?\u00a0Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah?\u00a0But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out,\u00a0\u201cYes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.\u00a0Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, \u201cWhen the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus said,\u00a0\u201cI am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jews said to one another, \u201cWhere does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?\u00a0What did he mean when he said,\u00a0\u2018You will look for me, but you will not find me,\u2019and\u00a0\u2018Where I am, you cannot come\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,\u00a0\u201cLet anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On hearing his words, some of the people said, \u201cSurely this man is the Prophet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others said, \u201cHe is the Messiah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still others asked, \u201cHow can the Messiah come from Galilee?\u00a0Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David\u2019s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?\u201d\u00a0Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you bring him in?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo one ever spoke the way this man does,\u201d the guards replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou mean he has deceived you also?\u201d the Pharisees retorted.\u00a0\u201cHave any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?\u00a0No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law\u2014there is a curse on them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked,\u00a0\u201cDoes our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They replied, \u201cAre you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have&nbsp;John 7:53\u20148:11. The vote wasn\u2019t if he was the greatest performer, political candidate, or entertainer but whether he is the Messiah. Is Jesus their long awaited anointed one? Will he save them? Will he make them whole?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus said in John 7:28-29, \u201cYou know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.\u201d Their votes don\u2019t make him the Messiah, God does. Jesus also said in John 7:37-38, \u201cIf anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, \u2018Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.\u201d Their votes don\u2019t save him, Jesus saves them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the Reality TV show metaphor breaks down and we realize the truth. He isn\u2019t the contestant, we are. He has been watching our lives, rooting for us, arguing against the accuser, and giving us help when we need it most. He is the judge who decides our fate, declares our victory, and throws the best after party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In what ways have you judged Jesus?
