It was about noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her,&nbsp;\u201cWill you give me a drink?\u201d8(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9The Samaritan woman said to him, \u201cYou are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?\u201d (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10Jesus answered her,&nbsp;\u201cIf you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11\u201cSir,\u201d the woman said, \u201cyou have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?&nbsp;12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>13Jesus answered,&nbsp;\u201cEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,14but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>15The woman said to him, \u201cSir, give me this water so that I won\u2019t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>16He told her,&nbsp;\u201cGo, call your husband and come back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>17\u201cI have no husband,\u201d she replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus said to her,&nbsp;\u201cYou are right when you say you have no husband.18The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>19\u201cSir,\u201d the woman said, \u201cI can see that you are a prophet.&nbsp;20Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>21&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cWoman,\u201dJesus replied,&nbsp;\u201cbelieve me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>25The woman said, \u201cI know that Messiah\u201d (called Christ) \u201cis coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>26Then Jesus declared,&nbsp;\u201cI, the one speaking to you\u2014I am he.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Disciples Rejoin Jesus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>27Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d or \u201cWhy are you talking with her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>28Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,&nbsp;29\u201cCome, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?\u201d&nbsp;30They came out of the town and made their way toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>31Meanwhile his disciples urged him, \u201cRabbi, eat something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>32But he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cI have food to eat that you know nothing about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>33Then his disciples said to each other, \u201cCould someone have brought him food?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>34&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cMy food,\u201dsaid Jesus,&nbsp;\u201cis to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.35Don\u2019t you have a saying, \u2018It\u2019s still four months until harvest\u2019? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.36Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.37Thus the saying \u2018One sows and another reaps\u2019 is true.38I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Many Samaritans Believe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>39Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman\u2019s testimony, \u201cHe told me everything I ever did.\u201d&nbsp;40So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.&nbsp;41And because of his words many more became believers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>42They said to the woman, \u201cWe no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jesus Heals an Official\u2019s Son<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>43After the two days he left for Galilee.&nbsp;44(Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)&nbsp;45When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>46Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.&nbsp;47When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>48&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cUnless you people see signs and wonders,\u201dJesus told him,&nbsp;\u201cyou will never believe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>49The royal official said, \u201cSir, come down before my child dies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>50&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cGo,\u201dJesus replied,&nbsp;\u201cyour son will live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man took Jesus at his word and departed.&nbsp;51While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.&nbsp;52When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, \u201cYesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>53Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him,&nbsp;\u201cYour son will live.\u201dSo he and his whole household believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>54This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Ever taught a toddler to be selfish and demanding? This sin nature renders us spiritually dead, and we\u2019re blinded by:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Power and popularity (the Pharisees);&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Religion and deceitful teaching (Samaritans);&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immorality (the excommunicated, adulterous woman at the well);&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural and generational ideas of who and what is superior or inferior (Samaritans and women in Jesus\u2019 time);&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ignorance and unbelief (disciples who perceived hunger and food as exclusively physical, the official with the dying son);&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Familiarity and prideful disdain (a prophet in his hometown).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These falsehoods sparkle in the glass then bite us with insatiable thirst (see Proverbs 23:31-35). Our only hope is to encounter Jesus, whose words of life reveal the mystery of who he is: the Giver\u2019s gift, living water, Messiah, the Christ, \u201cindeed, the savior of the world\u201d (John 4:42). Believing, we experience the greatest mystery of all time: the secret riches of indwelling hope in Christ (see Colossians 1:26-27). An eternal spring quenches our parched souls, and through our testimony, overflows to others so they, too, can encounter him, hear for themselves, and believe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you blinded by any empty promises of falsehoods that plague you with insatiable thirst? Talk to Jesus.
