I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And as they were eating,&nbsp;he said,&nbsp;\u201cTruly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, \u201cIs it I, Lord?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>He answered,&nbsp;\u201cHe who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>The Son of Man goes&nbsp;as it is written of him, but&nbsp;woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed!&nbsp;It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>Judas, who would betray him, answered, \u201cIs it I,&nbsp;Rabbi?\u201d He said to him,&nbsp;\u201cYou have said so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Institution of the Lord&#8217;s Supper<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and&nbsp;after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said,&nbsp;\u201cTake, eat;&nbsp;this is my body.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And he took a cup, and when he&nbsp;had given thanks he gave it to them, saying,&nbsp;\u201cDrink of it, all of you,&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>for&nbsp;this is my&nbsp;blood of the&nbsp;covenant, which is poured out for&nbsp;many&nbsp;for the forgiveness of sins.&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you&nbsp;in my Father&#8217;s kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Foretells Peter&#8217;s Denial<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they had sung a hymn,&nbsp;they went out to&nbsp;the Mount of Olives.&nbsp;<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Jesus said to them,&nbsp;\u201cYou will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, \u2018I will&nbsp;strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>But after I am raised up,&nbsp;I will go before you to Galilee.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>Peter answered him, \u201cThough they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>Jesus said to him,&nbsp;\u201cTruly, I tell you, this very night,&nbsp;before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>Peter said to him, \u201cEven if I must die with you, I will not deny you!\u201d And all the disciples said the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Prays in Gethsemane<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Jesus went with them&nbsp;to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples,&nbsp;\u201cSit here, while I go over there and pray.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>And taking with him&nbsp;Peter and&nbsp;the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>Then he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cMy soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and&nbsp;watch&nbsp;with me.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>And going a little farther he fell on his face&nbsp;and prayed, saying,&nbsp;\u201cMy Father, if it be possible, let&nbsp;this cup pass from me;&nbsp;nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter,&nbsp;\u201cSo, could you not watch with me one hour?&nbsp;<sup>41&nbsp;<\/sup>Watch and&nbsp;pray that you&nbsp;may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>42&nbsp;<\/sup>Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed,&nbsp;\u201cMy Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it,&nbsp;your will be done.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>43&nbsp;<\/sup>And again he came and found them sleeping, for&nbsp;their eyes were heavy.&nbsp;<sup>44&nbsp;<\/sup>So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for&nbsp;the third time, saying the same words again.&nbsp;<sup>45&nbsp;<\/sup>Then he came to the disciples and said to them,&nbsp;\u201cSleep and take your rest later on.&nbsp;See,&nbsp;the hour is at hand, and&nbsp;the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.&nbsp;<sup>46&nbsp;<\/sup>Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>47&nbsp;<\/sup>While he was still speaking,&nbsp;Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.&nbsp;<sup>48&nbsp;<\/sup>Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, \u201cThe one I will kiss is the man; seize him.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>49&nbsp;<\/sup>And he came up to Jesus at once and said, \u201cGreetings,&nbsp;Rabbi!\u201d And he kissed him.&nbsp;<sup>50&nbsp;<\/sup>Jesus said to him,&nbsp;\u201cFriend,&nbsp;do what you came to do.\u201d&nbsp;Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.&nbsp;<sup>51&nbsp;<\/sup>And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his&nbsp;sword and struck the servant&nbsp;of the high priest and cut off his ear.&nbsp;<sup>52&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Jesus said to him,&nbsp;\u201cPut your sword back into its place. For&nbsp;all who take the sword will perish by the sword.&nbsp;<sup>53&nbsp;<\/sup>Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me&nbsp;more than twelve&nbsp;legions of angels?&nbsp;<sup>54&nbsp;<\/sup>But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>55&nbsp;<\/sup>At that hour Jesus said to the crowds,&nbsp;\u201cHave you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day&nbsp;I sat in the temple&nbsp;teaching, and you did not seize me.&nbsp;<sup>56&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.\u201d&nbsp;Then all the disciples left him and fled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>57&nbsp;<\/sup>Then&nbsp;those who had seized Jesus led him to&nbsp;Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.&nbsp;<sup>58&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;Peter was following him at a distance, as far as&nbsp;the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with&nbsp;the guards to see the end.&nbsp;<sup>59&nbsp;<\/sup>Now the chief priests and the whole council&nbsp;were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death,&nbsp;<sup>60&nbsp;<\/sup>but they found none,&nbsp;though many false witnesses came forward. At last&nbsp;two came forward&nbsp;<sup>61&nbsp;<\/sup>and said, \u201cThis man said,&nbsp;\u2018I am able to&nbsp;destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<sup>62&nbsp;<\/sup>And the high priest stood up and said, \u201cHave you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>63&nbsp;<\/sup>But Jesus remained silent.&nbsp;And the high priest said to him,&nbsp;\u201cI adjure you by&nbsp;the living God,&nbsp;tell us if you are&nbsp;the Christ,&nbsp;the Son of God.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>64&nbsp;<\/sup>Jesus said to him,&nbsp;\u201cYou have said so. But I tell you, from now on&nbsp;you will see the Son of Man&nbsp;seated at the right hand of Power and&nbsp;coming on the clouds of heaven.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>65&nbsp;<\/sup>Then the high priest&nbsp;tore his robes and said,&nbsp;\u201cHe has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy.&nbsp;<sup>66&nbsp;<\/sup>What is your judgment?\u201d They answered,&nbsp;\u201cHe deserves death.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>67&nbsp;<\/sup>Then&nbsp;they spit in his face&nbsp;and&nbsp;struck him. And some slapped him,&nbsp;<sup>68&nbsp;<\/sup>saying, \u201cProphesy to us, you&nbsp;Christ! Who is it that struck you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peter Denies Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>69&nbsp;<\/sup>Now Peter was sitting outside&nbsp;in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, \u201cYou also were with Jesus the Galilean.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>70&nbsp;<\/sup>But he denied it before them all, saying, \u201cI do not know what you mean.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>71&nbsp;<\/sup>And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, \u201cThis man was with Jesus&nbsp;of Nazareth.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>72&nbsp;<\/sup>And again he denied it with an oath: \u201cI do not know the man.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>73&nbsp;<\/sup>After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, \u201cCertainly you too are one of them, for&nbsp;your accent betrays you.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>74&nbsp;<\/sup>Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, \u201cI do not know the man.\u201d And immediately the rooster crowed.&nbsp;<sup>75&nbsp;<\/sup>And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus,&nbsp;\u201cBefore the rooster crows, you will&nbsp;deny me three times.\u201d&nbsp;And he went out and wept bitterly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Rejection wounds. Betrayal blindsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insecurity taunts. Fear binds. Anxiety paralyzes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health declines. Treatments fail. Limits linger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Injuries sideline. Aging thieves. Death destroys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marriages crumble. Babies die. Children wander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finances fail. Losses mount. Hope fades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suffering is universal, but our experiences feel intensely personal. No one but me has walked in my shoes. No one but you has walked in yours. But Jesus\u2014Man of Sorrows\u2014he\u2019s walked in all of our shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our sorrows may catch us off guard, but Jesus knew what was said of him long before he departed heaven\u2019s glory for humanity\u2019s grit: \u201cHe was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not\u201d (Isaiah 53:3, ESV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were not simply strangers from pagan nations who\u2019d never heard of God or experienced his miracles and faithfulness. No, these were the people God set apart as his. They maliciously deemed him vile, avoided, and despised Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isaiah\u2019s predictions unfold in Matthew 26:17-75. Jesus knows his \u201ctime is at hand\u201d (18). As his enemies conspire in darkness and hatred, treachery within his inner circle tipped the progression of prophesied anguish, torment, and brutal affliction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus knows his body will be broken and his blood poured out for the forgiveness of my sins and yours, and he begins to live out the unthinkable. He is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Neglected by his closest friends when his sorrowful, troubled soul desperately needed their watchful care (37-45)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBetrayed into the hands of sinners\u201d (45)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treated like a criminal (47, 55)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kissed on the cheek while stabbed in the back (48-49)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Violently accosted (50)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deserted by the same close friends who swore their dying loyalty (35, 56)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hated by religious leaders consecrated and anointed to guard God\u2019s ways for his coming (57-59)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Falsely accused (59-60)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wanted dead (66)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spit on, beaten, mocked, and ridiculed (67-68)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disowned and disavowed by his most impassioned, vocal follower (69-74)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus really does get us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To know Jesus as Man of Sorrows is to know Jesus as one who knows our every sorrow in personal, profound, and amplified ways. It\u2019s to know Jesus\u2019 compassion as one who has felt what we feel and \u201csuffers with\u201d us (see Hebrews 4:15). It\u2019s to know the one who will soon turn our sorrows into joyful rejoicing (see John 20-22).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In what ways have you and Jesus suffered similar sorrow, suffering, or distress?
