For she has done a beautiful thing to me.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;you always have the poor with you, but&nbsp;you will not always have me.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it&nbsp;to prepare me for burial.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>Truly, I say to you, wherever&nbsp;this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told&nbsp;in memory of her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Judas to Betray Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>Then one of the twelve, whose name was&nbsp;Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>and said, \u201cWhat will you give me if I deliver him over to you?\u201d And they&nbsp;paid him&nbsp;thirty pieces of silver.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>And from that moment he sought an opportunity&nbsp;to betray him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Matthew leaves little room to doubt this as he describes the jar as an \u201calabaster flask of very expensive ointment.\u201d (v.7). John tells us that the perfume was not only expensive but worth a year\u2019s wages (John 12:5, NIV). Were her actions wasteful? In the moment, I might have thought so. Like the disciples, I am prudent, resourceful, and logical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But \u201cIs anything wasted which is all for Jesus? It might rather seem as if all would be wasted which was not given to Him!\u201d<sup data-fn=\"363adcc8-18e0-4708-a25c-4d0cf2b279ab\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#363adcc8-18e0-4708-a25c-4d0cf2b279ab\" id=\"363adcc8-18e0-4708-a25c-4d0cf2b279ab-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> Mary\u2019s gesture wasn\u2019t wasteful; it was one of extravagant, costly devotion, and it held profound significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The perfume poured upon the crown of Christ\u2019s head was symbolic. Throughout Scripture, anointing oil \u201csymbolized the water of life and God\u2019s spirit combined together\u201d and was \u201cused to mark a person or a place as a bridge between Heaven and Earth.<sup data-fn=\"3ce0ba1f-e7ae-4160-b707-e20343a19d1b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#3ce0ba1f-e7ae-4160-b707-e20343a19d1b\" id=\"3ce0ba1f-e7ae-4160-b707-e20343a19d1b-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After waking from a divine dream in the wilderness that depicted a ladder to heaven, Jacob exclaimed, \u201cHow awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.\u201d He then took the stone that rested under his head as he slept and anointed it with oil (Genesis 28:10-19). Heaven met Jacob on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the completion of the Tabernacle, the people of God anointed the tent with oil, acknowledging the Tabernacle as the bridge between the people of God (on Earth) and God himself (in Heaven).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Priests and kings who mediated the relationship between the Israelites (Earth) and God (Heaven) were anointed with oil to mark them as set apart, divinely ordained leaders before God.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Mary anoints Jesus using a perfume worth a year\u2019s wages. In doing so, she acknowledges him as the one in whom Heaven meets Earth, worships him because he is holy and set apart, and honors him as the mediator who would soon bridge the gap between herself and the righteous and holy God completely and forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary\u2019s decision was costly, but it certainly was not wasteful because she knew who reclined at the table. This man was the Christ\u2014a title derived from the Greek word \u03c7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2 (chr\u012bst\u00f3s), meaning &#8216;anointed one.&#8217; He was also the Messiah\u2014a designation taken from the Hebrew word \u05de\u05b8\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05d7\u05b7 (mashiach), meaning &#8216;anointed.&#8217; Mary was simply anointing the Anointed One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consider the costliness of Mary&#8217;s decision to anoint Jesus with perfume worth a year&#8217;s wages.
