And&nbsp;Julius&nbsp;treated Paul kindly and&nbsp;gave him leave to go to his friends and be cared for.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>And putting out to sea from there we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were against us.&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>And when we had sailed across the open sea along the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra in Lycia.&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>There the centurion found&nbsp;a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy and put us on board.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>We sailed slowly for a number of days and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, and as the wind did not allow us to go farther, we sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmone.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>Coasting along it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>Since much time had passed, and the voyage was now dangerous because even\u00a0the Fast\u00a0was already over, Paul advised them,\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>saying, \u201cSirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with\u00a0injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.\u201d\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>But the centurion paid more attention to\u00a0the pilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>And because the harbor was not suitable to spend the winter in, the majority decided to put out to sea from there, on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete, facing both southwest and northwest, and spend the winter there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Storm at Sea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Now when the south wind blew gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to the shore.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>But soon a tempestuous wind, called the northeaster,\u00a0struck down from the land.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>And when the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along.\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>Running under the lee of a small island called Cauda,\u00a0we managed with difficulty to secure the ship&#8217;s boat.\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>After hoisting it up, they used supports to undergird the ship. Then, fearing that they would\u00a0run aground on the Syrtis, they lowered the gear,\u00a0and thus they were driven along.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Since we were violently storm-tossed, they began the next day\u00a0to jettison the cargo.\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>And on the third day they threw the ship&#8217;s tackle overboard with their own hands.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>Since they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among them and said, \u201cMen,&nbsp;you should have listened to me and not have set sail from Crete and incurred this&nbsp;injury and loss.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>Yet now I urge you to&nbsp;take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>For this very night&nbsp;there&nbsp;stood before me&nbsp;an angel of the God&nbsp;to whom I belong and&nbsp;whom I worship,&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>and he said, \u2018Do not be afraid, Paul;&nbsp;you must stand before Caesar. And behold,&nbsp;God has granted you all those who sail with you.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told.&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;we must&nbsp;run aground on some island.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>When the fourteenth night had come, as we were being driven across the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land.\u00a0<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>So they took a sounding and found twenty fathoms.\u00a0A little farther on they took a sounding again and found fifteen fathoms.\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>And fearing that we might\u00a0run on the rocks, they let down four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come.\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, and had lowered\u00a0the ship&#8217;s boat into the sea under pretense of laying out anchors from the bow,\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, \u201cUnless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.\u201d\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the ship&#8217;s boat and let it go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying, \u201cToday is the fourteenth day that you have continued in suspense and without food, having taken nothing.\u00a0<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore I urge you to take some food. For it will give you strength,\u00a0for\u00a0not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you.\u201d\u00a0<sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>And when he had said these things, he took bread, and\u00a0giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat.\u00a0<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>Then they all\u00a0were encouraged and ate some food themselves.\u00a0<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>(We were in all 276\u00a0persons in the ship.)\u00a0<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship,\u00a0throwing out the wheat into the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Shipwreck<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>Now when it was day,\u00a0they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach, on which they planned if possible to run the ship ashore.\u00a0<sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the ropes that tied the rudders. Then hoisting the foresail to the wind they made for the beach.\u00a0<sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>But striking a reef,\u00a0they ran the vessel aground. The bow stuck and remained immovable, and the stern was being broken up by the surf.\u00a0<sup>42\u00a0<\/sup>The soldiers&#8217; plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any should swim away and escape.\u00a0<sup>43\u00a0<\/sup>But the centurion,\u00a0wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and make for the land,\u00a0<sup>44\u00a0<\/sup>and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship. For years, he had been longing to go to Rome to establish a home base for the Church. In this chapter, we see the sovereignty of God on display. Luke gives us a detailed account of Paul\u2019s voyage to Rome, beginning with difficulty (27:4,7-8) and ending with disaster (27:40-44). But at the moment when it seemed like all hope was lost, God sends an angel to tell Paul \u201cDo not be afraid.\u201d (24). More often than not, God answers our prayers in ways we\u2019d never expect. The shipwreck was always a part of God\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you and I will most likely never be in this exact situation, we will certainly go through hard times and trials. But because of Jesus, you will never face hardship alone. Our struggles are a reminder that hope is not based in our circumstances, but in the God who holds all things together. Notice how Paul was exposed to the same dangers as everyone else, the waves were just as high, and the darkness was just as intense. As followers of Christ, you and I will face the same challenges as this world. Christians face trials and struggles just like everyone else.
