And he said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cI am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated&nbsp;at the feet of&nbsp;Gamaliel&nbsp;according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers,&nbsp;being zealous for God&nbsp;as all of you are this day.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>I persecuted&nbsp;this Way&nbsp;to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women,&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>as&nbsp;the high priest and&nbsp;the whole council of elders can bear me witness. From them I received letters to&nbsp;the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cAs I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me,&nbsp;\u2018Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?\u2019&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And I answered, \u2018Who are you, Lord?\u2019 And he said to me,&nbsp;\u2018I am&nbsp;Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand&nbsp;the voice of the one who was speaking to me.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>And I said,&nbsp;\u2018What shall I do, Lord?\u2019 And the Lord said to me,&nbsp;\u2018Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cAnd&nbsp;one Ananias, a devout man&nbsp;according to the law,&nbsp;well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there,&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>came to me, and standing by me said to me, \u2018Brother Saul, receive your sight.\u2019 And&nbsp;at that very hour I received my sight and saw him.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said,&nbsp;\u2018The God of our fathers&nbsp;appointed you to know his will,&nbsp;to see&nbsp;the Righteous One and&nbsp;to hear a voice from his mouth;&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>for&nbsp;you will be a witness for him to everyone of what&nbsp;you have seen and heard.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>And now why do you wait?&nbsp;Rise and be baptized and&nbsp;wash away your sins,&nbsp;calling on his name.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWhen I had returned to Jerusalem and&nbsp;was praying in the temple, I fell into&nbsp;a trance&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>and saw him saying to me,&nbsp;\u2018Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And I said, \u2018Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another&nbsp;I imprisoned and&nbsp;beat those who believed in you.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>And when the blood of Stephen&nbsp;your witness was being shed,&nbsp;I myself was standing by and&nbsp;approving and&nbsp;watching over the garments of those who killed him.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to me,&nbsp;\u2018Go, for I will send you&nbsp;far away to the Gentiles.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul and the Roman Tribune<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said,&nbsp;\u201cAway with such a fellow from the earth! For&nbsp;he should not be allowed to live.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>And as they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air,&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>the tribune ordered him to be brought into&nbsp;the barracks, saying that he should be&nbsp;examined by flogging, to find out why they were shouting against him like this.&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>But when they had stretched him out for the whips,&nbsp;Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, \u201cIs it lawful for you to flog&nbsp;a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, \u201cWhat are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>So the tribune came and said to him, \u201cTell me, are you a Roman citizen?\u201d And he said, \u201cYes.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>The tribune answered, \u201cI bought this citizenship for a large sum.\u201d Paul said, \u201cBut I am a citizen by birth.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>So those who were about&nbsp;to examine him withdrew from him immediately, and the tribune also&nbsp;was afraid,&nbsp;for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that&nbsp;he had bound him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul Before the Council<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>But on the next day,&nbsp;desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. When the latter violently opposed him, God advanced Paul\u2019s appointed assignment to witness Jesus to everyone (Acts 22:10, 15 ESV). We can expect God to be equally faithful to us when adversaries reject the gospel and the inerrant truth of God\u2019s Word. It may be helpful to remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No authority or crowd can divert God\u2019s steadfast love and ever-present help for us as he fulfills his plans (Isaiah 14:27 and Psalm 138:8).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conflict often presents an opportunity to fearlessly testify what we have seen and heard of Jesus (Acts 22:15).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God uses us despite our past actions and present reputation (Acts 22:20-21).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Previous peers may become pompous persecutors (Acts 22:20, 22-23).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some may listen to a certain point before they reject our message, while others will remain curious, like Lysias (Acts 22:22, 24).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Acts 22 challenges me to confront my fear of man and heed Peter\u2019s instruction to \u201cbe prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you\u201d (1 Peter 3:15 ESV). Paul models a simple, practical approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Establish commonality with your audience: How are you alike?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Describe yourself before Christ: Who were you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Share your encounter with Jesus: How did you meet him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Summarize life with Jesus: What changed, and how is it different now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proactive preparation matters, for a ready defense breeds boldness to witness Jesus wherever God sends us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Have you crafted a concise, humble testimony that equips you to explain the hope you enjoy in Christ with those God brings across your path?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-f0575d6 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\"><style>.ugb-f0575d6 hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-f0575d6 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Miracles, strengthened disciples, and enraged Jews followed Paul to Jerusalem.
