There he found some disciples.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them,\u00a0\u201cDid you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?\u201d And they said, \u201cNo,\u00a0we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.\u201d\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>And he said,\u00a0\u201cInto what then were you baptized?\u201d They said, \u201cInto\u00a0John&#8217;s baptism.\u201d\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>And Paul said,\u00a0\u201cJohn baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people\u00a0to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.\u201d\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>On hearing this,\u00a0they were baptized in\u00a0the name of the Lord Jesus.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and\u00a0they began speaking in tongues and\u00a0prophesying.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>There were about twelve men in all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them\u00a0about the kingdom of God.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>But when some became stubborn and\u00a0continued in unbelief, speaking evil of\u00a0the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>This continued for\u00a0two years, so that\u00a0all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sons of Sceva<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and\u00a0the evil spirits came out of them.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Then some of the itinerant Jewish\u00a0exorcists\u00a0undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying,\u00a0\u201cI adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.\u201d\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>But the evil spirit answered them,\u00a0\u201cJesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?\u201d\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all\u00a0of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and\u00a0the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Also many of those who were now believers came,\u00a0confessing and divulging their practices.\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>So the word of the Lord\u00a0continued to increase and prevail mightily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Riot at Ephesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit&nbsp;to pass through&nbsp;Macedonia and Achaia and&nbsp;go to Jerusalem, saying, \u201cAfter I have been there,&nbsp;I must also see Rome.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>And having sent into Macedonia two of&nbsp;his helpers,&nbsp;Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia&nbsp;for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>About that time&nbsp;there arose no little disturbance concerning&nbsp;the Way.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis,&nbsp;brought no little business to the craftsmen.&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, \u201cMen, you know that from this business we have our wealth.&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people,&nbsp;saying that&nbsp;gods made with hands are not gods.&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the&nbsp;great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out,\u00a0\u201cGreat is Artemis of the Ephesians!\u201d\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and\u00a0Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul&#8217;s\u00a0companions in travel.\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>And even some of the Asiarchs,\u00a0who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater.\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.\u00a0<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander,\u00a0motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd.\u00a0<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice,\u00a0\u201cGreat is Artemis of the Ephesians!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, \u201cMen of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from\u00a0the sky?\u00a0<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.\u00a0<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>For you have brought\u00a0these men here who are neither\u00a0sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess.\u00a0<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are\u00a0proconsuls. Sometimes, we too put our hope in church, in the things we do, or even in other people like the Christians in Ephesus did. The Christians in Ephesus are examples that the Holy Spirit only comes into our lives when we believe in Jesus and with that, miraculous things can happen. The Holy Spirit resting upon the Christians in Ephesus destroyed their unbelief.&nbsp; The harsh reality is that what happened to the Sons of Sceva is the result of living without truly knowing who Jesus is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember a time when I thought I knew a lot about cooking. I would tell people that I could cook these super fancy meals that would challenge Gordon Ramsay\u2019s best dish. Then, one day I mentioned that in front of someone who actually knew how to cook, and they started asking me how I make my famous chicken alfredo. I could not Google \u201cchicken alfredo recipes\u201d fast enough. I went away embarrassed. Similarly, we may not truly know Jesus but act like we do. Look deeper into the character of Jesus and gain confidence in the power that has been entrusted to you.
