And he went to see them,\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>and\u00a0because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0he reasoned in the synagogue\u00a0every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul&nbsp;was occupied with the word,&nbsp;testifying to the Jews that the Christ was&nbsp;Jesus.&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they opposed and reviled him,&nbsp;he shook out his garments and said to them,&nbsp;\u201cYour blood be on your own heads!&nbsp;I am innocent.&nbsp;From now on I will go to the Gentiles.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius&nbsp;Justus,&nbsp;a worshiper of God. His house was next door to the synagogue.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together&nbsp;with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Lord said to Paul&nbsp;one night in&nbsp;a vision,&nbsp;\u201cDo not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent,&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>for I am with you, and&nbsp;no one will attack you to harm you, for&nbsp;I have many in this city who are my people.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>But when Gallio was\u00a0proconsul of Achaia,\u00a0the Jews\u00a0made a united attack on Paul and\u00a0brought him before the tribunal,\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>saying, \u201cThis man is persuading people to worship God contrary to\u00a0the law.\u201d\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, \u201cIf it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious\u00a0crime, O Jews, I would have reason to accept your complaint.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>But\u00a0since it is a matter of questions about words and names and\u00a0your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of these things.\u201d\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>And he drove them from the tribunal.\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>And they all seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to any of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul Returns to Antioch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of\u00a0the brothers\u00a0and set sail for Syria, and with him\u00a0Priscilla and Aquila. At\u00a0Cenchreae\u00a0he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow.\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>And they came to\u00a0Ephesus, and he left them there, but\u00a0he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined.\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>But on taking leave of them he said, \u201cI will return to you\u00a0if God wills,\u201d and he set sail from Ephesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>When he had landed at Caesarea, he&nbsp;went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>After spending some time there, he departed and&nbsp;went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia,&nbsp;strengthening all the disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apollos Speaks Boldly in Ephesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>Now a Jew named\u00a0Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man,\u00a0competent in the Scriptures.\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>He had been instructed in\u00a0the way of the Lord. And\u00a0being fervent in spirit,\u00a0he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only\u00a0the baptism of John.\u00a0<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when\u00a0Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him\u00a0the way of God more accurately.\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>And when he wished to cross to\u00a0Achaia,\u00a0the brothers encouraged him and\u00a0wrote to the disciples to welcome him. As you read through Acts 18, notice the\u00a0key figures in the early church who were united by a commitment to Christ and the scriptures and, not to be overlooked, to one another.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too often, our objectives in life are formed from the comparisons we make to the world around us. Yet, we can look to the examples set by Paul and others in the local church and build our lives on the things pleasing to God. Amid trials and persecution in the emergence of the Christian faith, believers in Acts 18 were committed to God\u2019s Word, listening to God\u2019s call, and spending time with God\u2019s people. Simple but profound objectives that give the believer a wildly different lifestyle than what the unbelieving world understands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul\u2019s mission in life was clear: He wanted all to know that Jesus is the Messiah and he is worthy to be worshipped.
