{"id":2212,"date":"2024-01-24T00:03:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T06:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2024-01-10T17:23:52","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T23:23:52","slug":"1-24-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/1-24-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Day Seventeen | The Book of Acts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-0\">Acts 17<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Devotional by <\/span>Lauren Lee<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Read Acts 17<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"aligncenter wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-b058165 ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\"><style>.ugb-b058165-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:rgba(240,240,240,1) !important}.ugb-b058165-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f0f0f0 !important}.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-b058165-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-b058165-content-wrapper\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acts 17  <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul and Silas in Thessalonica<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>17\u00a0<\/strong>Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to\u00a0Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And Paul went in,\u00a0as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them\u00a0from the Scriptures,\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>explaining and proving that it was necessary for\u00a0the Christ to suffer and\u00a0to rise from the dead, and saying, \u201cThis Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.\u201d\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did\u00a0a great many of the devout\u00a0Greeks and not a few of the leading women.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>But the Jews\u00a0were jealous, and taking\u00a0some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>And when they could not find them,\u00a0they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, \u201cThese men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against\u00a0the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is\u00a0another king, Jesus.\u201d\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul and Silas in Berea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>The brothers\u00a0immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they\u00a0went into the Jewish synagogue.\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness,\u00a0examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek\u00a0women of high standing as well as men.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too,\u00a0agitating and stirring up the crowds.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>Then the brothers\u00a0immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and\u00a0Timothy remained there.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as\u00a0Athens, and after receiving a command\u00a0for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul in Athens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was&nbsp;provoked within him as he saw that the city was&nbsp;full of idols.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>So&nbsp;he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said,&nbsp;\u201cWhat does this babbler wish to say?\u201d Others said, \u201cHe seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities\u201d\u2014because&nbsp;he was preaching&nbsp;Jesus and the resurrection.&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And they took him and brought him to&nbsp;the Areopagus, saying, \u201cMay we know what this&nbsp;new teaching is that you are presenting?&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>For you bring some&nbsp;strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul Addresses the Areopagus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: \u201cMen of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription:\u00a0\u2018To the unknown god.\u2019\u00a0What therefore you worship\u00a0as unknown, this I proclaim to you.\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>The God who made the world and everything in it, being\u00a0Lord of heaven and earth,\u00a0does not live in temples made by man,\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>nor is he served by human hands,\u00a0as though he needed anything, since he himself\u00a0gives to all mankind\u00a0life and breath and everything.\u00a0<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0he made from one man every nation of mankind to live\u00a0on all the face of the earth,\u00a0having determined allotted periods and\u00a0the boundaries of their dwelling place,\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>that they should seek God,\u00a0and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.\u00a0Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,\u00a0<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>for<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018In him we live and move and have our being\u2019;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>as even some of&nbsp;your own poets have said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018For we are indeed his offspring.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>Being then God&#8217;s offspring,&nbsp;we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>The times of ignorance&nbsp;God overlooked, but&nbsp;now he&nbsp;commands all people everywhere to repent,&nbsp;<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>because he has fixed&nbsp;a day on which&nbsp;he will judge the world&nbsp;in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and&nbsp;of this he has given assurance to all&nbsp;by raising him from the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>Now when they heard of&nbsp;the resurrection of the dead,&nbsp;some mocked. One observation is that people will respond in different ways to the message of Jesus. We read here of Jews in Berea responding with \u201ceagerness\u201d and intellectuals in Athens responding with a spirit of inquiry. However, some of the Jews in Thessalonica had a more aggressive response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of their jealousy, \u201cThey formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked\u201d (v. 5). They claimed that the disciples \u201cTurned the world upside down\u201d with their message. What a testimony! These men are giving them a compliment in disguise. They\u2019re saying that Christians have radically impacted the world and that things are different now. Of course, that is what the resurrection of Jesus did. It changed everything, and now, like Paul and Silas, we get to impact the world with this good news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do this by reasoning with people, loving them well, and telling them of the existence and character of God. Paul says to the people of Athens, who worshipped an \u201cunknown God,\u201d that this God is actually known, and his name is Jesus! He is the one who gives us life. They just needed to be told about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s come alongside Paul and Silas with a radical faith that turns the world upside down. And, if faced with opposition or persecution, like they sometimes were, take courage because Jesus warned us of this. \u201cIf the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you\u201d (John\u202c 15:18).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is one practical way you can impact the world for the gospel today?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In today\u2019s reading, we see Paul and Silas share the gospel with different groups of people.
