He was\u00a0crippled from birth and had never walked.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and\u00a0seeing that he had faith to be made well,\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>said in a loud voice, \u201cStand upright on your feet.\u201d And he\u00a0sprang up and began walking.\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian,\u00a0\u201cThe gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!\u201d\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Barnabas they called\u00a0Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>And the priest of\u00a0Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and\u00a0wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they\u00a0tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out,\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cMen,\u00a0why are you doing these things? We also are men,\u00a0of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that\u00a0you should turn from these\u00a0vain things to\u00a0a living God,\u00a0who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>In past generations he\u00a0allowed all the nations\u00a0to walk in their own ways.\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>Yet\u00a0he did not leave himself without witness, for he\u00a0did good by\u00a0giving you rains from heaven and\u00a0fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with\u00a0food and\u00a0gladness.\u201d\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Even with these words they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul Stoned at Lystra<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds,&nbsp;they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>When they had preached the gospel to that city and had&nbsp;made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them&nbsp;to continue in&nbsp;the faith, and saying that&nbsp;through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they had&nbsp;appointed&nbsp;elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting&nbsp;they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul and Barnabas Return to Antioch in Syria<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia.&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia,&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>and from there they sailed to Antioch,&nbsp;where they had been&nbsp;commended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled.&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they arrived and gathered the church together,&nbsp;they declared all that God had done with them, and&nbsp;how he had&nbsp;opened&nbsp;a door of faith to the Gentiles.&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>And they remained no little time with the disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. But did you know that the second Friday of January is known as \u201cQuitter\u2019s Day\u201d? That is the day when many people give up on their New Year\u2019s resolutions or goals. Maybe you can relate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acts 14 is encouraging because we read about Paul and Barnabus\u2019 perseverance during their ministry journey. They did not give up. They faced incredible opposition and trials that would have caused most people to quit. Even after receiving evil comments and the stoning of Paul, they did not give up. If anyone had a good excuse to quit, it was Paul! However, he was committed to serving Christ, no matter the cost. He persevered through all the trials and encouraged other believers in their faith. His motivation was to say, \u201cI have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith\u201d (2 Tim. 4:7, ESV).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether serving in ministry or going about our daily lives at work, school, or caring for children, we will all experience trials and discouragement. We may never face stoning or other adversity like we just read about. Even so, we can persevere through hard times knowing God is with us, just like he was with Paul and Barnabus. I pray that this passage gives you hope and encouragement to press on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At this point in our devotional series, Quitter\u2019s Day has passed, so how are you doing with your New Year\u2019s resolutions?
