This was during&nbsp;the days of Unleavened Bread.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>And when he had seized him, he put him&nbsp;in prison, delivering him over to four&nbsp;squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people.&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest&nbsp;prayer for him was made to God by the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peter Is Rescued<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers,&nbsp;bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And behold,&nbsp;an angel of the Lord&nbsp;stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell.&nbsp;He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, \u201cGet up quickly.\u201d And&nbsp;the chains fell off his hands.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And the angel said to him, \u201cDress yourself and&nbsp;put on your sandals.\u201d And he did so. And he said to him, \u201cWrap your cloak around you and follow me.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but&nbsp;thought he was seeing a vision.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city.&nbsp;It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>When Peter&nbsp;came to himself, he said, \u201cNow I am sure that&nbsp;the Lord has sent his angel and&nbsp;rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of\u00a0John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and\u00a0were praying.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>And when he knocked at the door of the gateway,\u00a0a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>Recognizing Peter&#8217;s voice,\u00a0in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>They said to her, \u201cYou are out of your mind.\u201d But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, \u201cIt is\u00a0his angel!\u201d\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed.\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>But\u00a0motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, \u201cTell these things to\u00a0James and to\u00a0the brothers.\u201d\u00a0Then he departed and went to another place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and&nbsp;ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Death of Herod<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and\u00a0having persuaded Blastus, the king&#8217;s chamberlain,\u00a0they asked for peace, because\u00a0their country depended on the king&#8217;s country for food.\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>And the people were shouting, \u201cThe voice of a god, and not of a man!\u201d\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately\u00a0an angel of the Lord struck him down, because\u00a0he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;the word of God increased and multiplied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>And Barnabas and Saul returned from\u00a0Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them\u00a0John, whose other name was Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. He breaks free from two chains, passes two guards, and walks straight through an iron gate that \u201copened on its own accord.\u201d After returning to reality following the stunning events of the night, Peter immediately responds: \u201cSurely the Lord rescued me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Meanwhile, Herod revels in his own importance. Eager to please the Jews, he executes James and imprisons Peter. We can certainly speculate about Herod\u2019s plans for Peter, but unbeknownst to him, Peter\u2019s fate was not in Herod\u2019s hands. Peter&#8217;s and Herod\u2019s\u2019 fates were fully in the Lord\u2019s hands, and time truly told what happens when man wears God\u2019s glory as if it\u2019s his own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">In the end, the word of God increased and multiplied because, of course, it did. No earthly authority can contain God\u2019s church or hinder the work of the faithful.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><strong><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Peter\u2019s escape from prison and Herod\u2019s demise both reveal the consequences of acknowledging or ignoring God\u2019s glory.
