{"id":2148,"date":"2024-01-15T00:03:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-15T06:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=2148"},"modified":"2024-01-08T17:40:11","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T23:40:11","slug":"1-15-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/1-15-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Day Eight | The Book of Acts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-0\">Acts 8<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Devotional by KJ Johnson<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Read Acts 8 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"aligncenter wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-b058165 ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\"><style>.ugb-b058165-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:rgba(240,240,240,1) !important}.ugb-b058165-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f0f0f0 !important}.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-b058165-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-b058165-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-b058165-content-wrapper\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acts 8<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saul Ravages the Church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8&nbsp;<\/strong>And&nbsp;Saul&nbsp;approved of his execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and&nbsp;they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him.&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he&nbsp;dragged off men and women and committed them to prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Philip Proclaims Christ in Samaria<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>Now&nbsp;those who were scattered went about preaching the word.&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>Philip went down to the city&nbsp;of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ.&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him&nbsp;and saw the signs that he did.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>So&nbsp;there was much joy in that city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Simon the Magician Believes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>But there was a man named Simon,&nbsp;who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria,&nbsp;saying that he himself was somebody great.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying,&nbsp;\u201cThis man is the power of God that is called&nbsp;Great.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had&nbsp;amazed them with his magic.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>But when&nbsp;they believed Philip as he preached good news&nbsp;about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ,&nbsp;they were baptized, both men and women.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And&nbsp;seeing signs and&nbsp;great miracles&nbsp;performed,&nbsp;he was amazed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>Now when&nbsp;the apostles at Jerusalem heard that&nbsp;Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John,&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>who came down and prayed for them&nbsp;that they might receive the Holy Spirit,&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>for&nbsp;he had not yet&nbsp;fallen on any of them, but&nbsp;they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>Then&nbsp;they laid their hands on them and&nbsp;they received the Holy Spirit.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles&#8217; hands, he offered them money,&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>saying, \u201cGive me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>But Peter said to him,&nbsp;\u201cMay your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God&nbsp;with money!&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for&nbsp;your heart is not right before God.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that,&nbsp;if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>For I see that you are in&nbsp;the gall&nbsp;of bitterness and in&nbsp;the bond of iniquity.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And Simon answered,&nbsp;\u201cPray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem,&nbsp;preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>Now&nbsp;an angel of the Lord said to Philip, \u201cRise and go toward the south&nbsp;to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.\u201d This is a desert place.&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And he rose and went. And there was an&nbsp;Ethiopian, a&nbsp;eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians,&nbsp;who was in charge of all her treasure.&nbsp;He had come to Jerusalem to worship&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah.&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Spirit said to Philip, \u201cGo over and join this chariot.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, \u201cDo you understand what you are reading?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said,&nbsp;\u201cHow can I, unless someone&nbsp;guides me?\u201d And&nbsp;he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLike a sheep he was led to the slaughter<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;so he opens not his mouth.<br><sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>In his&nbsp;humiliation justice was denied him.<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who can describe his generation?<br>For his life is taken away from the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>And the eunuch said to Philip, \u201cAbout whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Philip opened his mouth, and&nbsp;beginning with this Scripture&nbsp;he told him the good news about Jesus.&nbsp;<sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, \u201cSee, here is water!&nbsp;What prevents me from being baptized?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.&nbsp;<sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they came up out of the water,&nbsp;the Spirit of the Lord&nbsp;carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. The ESV may not be translated in whole or in part into any other language.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Devotional<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Do you truly believe in the life-changing power of the gospel?\u00a0 God continually takes what seems broken and dark and restores it.\u00a0 This passage shows us that the truth of Jesus holds the power to change any life.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Saul turns from the most violent of persecutors to a passionate missionary.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">The persecution of believers caused the gospel to spread.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">The gospel changes the lives of hungry souls in Samaria.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">The Ethiopian Eunuch is saved and takes the gospel back to his home.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">But this life change hinges on obedience and boldness.\u00a0 The persecuted believers took the gospel where they were scattered, and Philip went boldly proclaiming the gospel everywhere he went.\u00a0 This passage demonstrates the life changing power of the gospel, but even more so, it teaches us to be bold in proclaiming the gospel.\u00a0 Faithfulness and obedience are what God used to spark life change that reached the ends of the earth.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">This challenges us to faithfulness.\u00a0 First, we must believe in our hearts in the life-changing power of the gospel.\u00a0 It must change our lives.\u00a0 Second, God asks for our obedience when he calls us.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit called Philip to gospel moments and conversations.\u00a0 Philip\u2019s reaction was humble and confident obedience.\u00a0 How often do we sense that same tug of the Spirit yet ignore it?\u00a0 The results are not up to us, but the work is.\u00a0 All God asks for is our \u201cyes.\u201d\u00a0 If we simply obey, God will move far beyond what we could do on our own.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">How have you experienced the life-changing power of the gospel?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-f0575d6 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\"><style>.ugb-f0575d6 hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-f0575d6 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you truly believe in the life-changing power of the gospel?\u00a0 God continually takes what seems broken and dark and restores it.\u00a0 This passage shows us that the truth of Jesus holds the power to change any life.
