And\u00a0after his father died,\u00a0God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot&#8217;s length, but promised\u00a0to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him,\u00a0though he had no child.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>And God spoke to this effect\u2014that\u00a0his offspring would\u00a0be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them\u00a0four hundred years.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u2018But\u00a0I will judge the nation that they serve,\u2019 said God, \u2018and after that they shall come out\u00a0and worship me in this place.\u2019\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And\u00a0so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and\u00a0circumcised him on the eighth day, and\u00a0Isaac became the father of Jacob, and\u00a0Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cAnd the patriarchs,\u00a0jealous of Joseph,\u00a0sold him into Egypt; but\u00a0God was with him\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>and rescued him out of all his afflictions and\u00a0gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt,\u00a0who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household.\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>Now\u00a0there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0on the second visit\u00a0Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and\u00a0Joseph&#8217;s family became known to Pharaoh.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred,\u00a0seventy-five persons in all.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0Jacob went down into Egypt, and\u00a0he died, he\u00a0and our fathers,\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>and\u00a0they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that\u00a0Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut\u00a0as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham,\u00a0the people increased and multiplied in Egypt\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>until there arose over Egypt another king\u00a0who did not know Joseph.\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants,\u00a0so that they would not be kept alive.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God&#8217;s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father&#8217;s house,\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>and\u00a0when he was exposed, Pharaoh&#8217;s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>And Moses\u00a0was instructed in\u00a0all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was\u00a0mighty in his words and deeds.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhen he was forty years old, it came into his heart\u00a0to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.\u00a0<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, \u2018Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?\u2019\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying,\u00a0\u2018Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?\u00a0<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?\u2019\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>At this retort\u00a0Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian,\u00a0where he became the father of two sons.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cNow when forty years had passed,\u00a0an angel appeared to him\u00a0in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord:\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>\u2018I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.\u2019 And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.\u00a0<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>Then the Lord said to him,\u00a0\u2018Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.\u00a0<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and\u00a0have heard their groaning, and\u00a0I have come down to deliver them.\u00a0And now come, I will send you to Egypt.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThis Moses, whom they rejected,\u00a0saying, \u2018Who made you a ruler and a judge?\u2019\u2014this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer\u00a0by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.\u00a0<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>This man led them out, performing\u00a0wonders and signs\u00a0in Egypt and\u00a0at the Red Sea and\u00a0in the wilderness for\u00a0forty years.\u00a0<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, \u2018God will raise up for you\u00a0a prophet like me from your brothers.\u2019\u00a0<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>This is the one\u00a0who was in the congregation in the wilderness with\u00a0the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers.\u00a0He received\u00a0living\u00a0oracles to give to us.\u00a0<sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and\u00a0in their hearts they turned to Egypt,\u00a0<sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>saying to Aaron,\u00a0\u2018Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.\u2019\u00a0<sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and\u00a0were rejoicing in\u00a0the works of their hands.\u00a0<sup>42\u00a0<\/sup>But\u00a0God turned away and\u00a0gave them over to worship\u00a0the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">\u201c\u2018Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?<br><sup>43\u00a0<\/sup>You took up the tent of\u00a0Moloch<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and the star of your god Rephan,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the images that you made to worship;<br>and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>44\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cOur fathers had\u00a0the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses\u00a0directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.\u00a0<sup>45\u00a0<\/sup>Our fathers in turn\u00a0brought it in with Joshua when they\u00a0dispossessed the nations\u00a0that God drove out before our fathers. So it was\u00a0until the days of David,\u00a0<sup>46\u00a0<\/sup>who found favor in the sight of God and\u00a0asked to find a dwelling place for\u00a0the God of Jacob.\u00a0<sup>47\u00a0<\/sup>But it was\u00a0Solomon who built a house for him.\u00a0<sup>48\u00a0<\/sup>Yet the Most High does not dwell\u00a0in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>49\u00a0<\/sup>\u201c\u2018Heaven is my throne,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and the earth is my footstool.<br>What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0or what is the place of my rest?<br><sup>50\u00a0<\/sup>Did not my hand make all these things?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>51\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYou stiff-necked people,\u00a0uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit.\u00a0As your fathers did, so do you.\u00a0<sup>52\u00a0<\/sup>Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of\u00a0the Righteous One,\u00a0whom you have now betrayed and murdered,\u00a0<sup>53\u00a0<\/sup>you who received the law\u00a0as delivered by angels and\u00a0did not keep it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">The Stoning of Stephen<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><sup>54\u00a0<\/sup>Now when they heard these things\u00a0they were enraged, and they\u00a0ground their teeth at him.\u00a0<sup>55\u00a0<\/sup>But he,\u00a0full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw\u00a0the glory of God, and Jesus standing\u00a0at the right hand of God.\u00a0<sup>56\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cBehold, I see\u00a0the heavens opened, and\u00a0the Son of Man standing\u00a0at the right hand of God.\u201d\u00a0<sup>57\u00a0<\/sup>But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together\u00a0at him.\u00a0<sup>58\u00a0<\/sup>Then\u00a0they cast him out of the city and\u00a0stoned him. His speech follows a well-established pattern in Jewish tradition and is paralleled in Psalms 78 and 107. He reviews the history of the nation, focusing on three topics: The patriarchal period (v. 2-16), Moses and the law (v. 17-43), and the Tabernacle and the Temple (v.44-50).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">But Stephen\u2019s speech is more than a recount of Israel\u2019s history.&nbsp; There are multiple applications we should consider:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">\u27a2 Stephen presented a case that defying God\u2019s plan for redemption is deeply embedded in each of us.&nbsp; For instance, Joseph\u2019s brothers hated him, even though he was God\u2019s pointed deliverer for them; and, of course, a similar thing could be said about Moses, the prophets, and ultimately, Jesus, as he was killed by those whom he came to redeem.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Am I aware of my propensity toward pride or self-sufficiency?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">\u27a2 Stephen implies that while the Jews were circumcised physically, their hearts were still full of rebellion.&nbsp; Whether they were worshipping idols in the Tabernacle or Solomon\u2019s Temple, they missed God\u2019s desire for their genuine adoration.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Am I guilty of going through the motions in my walk with Jesus?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">\u27a2 Stephen was a faithful witness.&nbsp; Note the similarities between Jesus\u2019 final words and Stephen\u2019s.&nbsp; And don\u2019t miss the clear difference (7:59).&nbsp; Stephen identifies Jesus as the one who can receive his spirit\u2014a clear testimony to Christ\u2019s redeeming death and full deity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><strong><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Am I taking advantage of opportunities to have a gospel conversation, whether convenient or not?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-f0575d6 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\"><style>.ugb-f0575d6 hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-f0575d6 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This chapter records Stephen\u2019s lengthy response to Caiaphas, a high priest, who, interestingly, asked a similar question to Jesus the night he was betrayed.\u00a0 It is commonly referred to as Stephen\u2019s defense, but not in the usual sense of the word.\u00a0 In reality, Stephen defends Christianity as God\u2019s path to redemption.
