This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven,&nbsp;will&nbsp;come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>Then&nbsp;they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day&#8217;s journey away.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they had entered, they went up to&nbsp;the upper room, where they were staying,&nbsp;Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon&nbsp;the Zealot and Judas the son of James.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>All these&nbsp;with one accord&nbsp;were devoting themselves to prayer, together with&nbsp;the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and&nbsp;his brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>In those days Peter stood up among&nbsp;the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said,&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cBrothers,&nbsp;the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas,&nbsp;who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in&nbsp;this ministry.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>(Now this man&nbsp;acquired a field with&nbsp;the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong&nbsp;he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called&nbsp;in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cFor it is written in the Book of Psalms,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018May his camp become desolate,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and let there be no one to dwell in it\u2019;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018Let another take his office.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>So one of the men who have accompanied us during&nbsp;all the time that the Lord Jesus&nbsp;went in and out among us,&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>beginning from the baptism of John until the day when&nbsp;he was taken up from us\u2014one of these men must become with us&nbsp;a witness to his resurrection.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>And they put forward two, Joseph called&nbsp;Barsabbas, who was also called&nbsp;Justus, and&nbsp;Matthias.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;they prayed and said, \u201cYou, Lord,&nbsp;who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>to take the place in&nbsp;this ministry and&nbsp;apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;font-size:12px\">Scripture quotations are from the ESV\u00ae Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. The Holy Spirit empowers the disciples so that they can rightly understand and obey Jesus\u2019 teachings. We also see references to the Kingdom of God. We must remember that this is not an earthly political or military kingdom, but a gradual transformation of individual lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">A key verse in this passage is verse eight: \u201cBut you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.\u201d This is a thematic statement for all of Acts. As you journey through the book of Acts over the next twenty-seven days, pay attention to how the gospel spreads. The Holy Spirit, who gives power to Christ\u2019s Followers, has been eagerly awaited since John 14:16 when Jesus promised that a \u201cHelper\u201d would come. The disciples wondered when Jesus would come again (v. 6), but he challenged them to keep their focus on the witness of the gospel. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">It is easy to get consumed with what is next in our lives or to attempt to discern when something might happen, but we must ask: Have we given our attention to what Jesus commanded us to? When we place our faith in Jesus as both Savior and Lord, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13-14). Thus, it is now the Holy Spirit that empowers our witness, as seen in verse eight.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">What do we learn about the Holy Spirit in this passage?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-f0575d6 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\"><style>.ugb-f0575d6 hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-f0575d6 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The beginning of Acts parallels the conclusion of Luke\u2019s Gospel.
