Spirit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2&nbsp;<\/strong>When&nbsp;the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like&nbsp;a mighty rushing wind, and&nbsp;it filled the entire house where they were sitting.&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>And divided tongues&nbsp;as of fire appeared to them and rested&nbsp;on each one of them.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>And they were all&nbsp;filled with the Holy Spirit and began&nbsp;to speak in other tongues&nbsp;as the Spirit gave them utterance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;they were amazed and astonished, saying, \u201cAre not all these who are speaking&nbsp;Galileans?&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>Parthians and&nbsp;Medes and&nbsp;Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>both Jews and&nbsp;proselytes, Cretans and Arabians\u2014we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, \u201cWhat does this mean?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>But others&nbsp;mocking said, \u201cThey are filled with new wine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peter&#8217;s Sermon at Pentecost<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: \u201cMen of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>For these people are not drunk, as you suppose,&nbsp;since it is only the third hour of the day.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201c\u2018And in the last days it shall be, God declares,<br>that I will pour out my Spirit&nbsp;on all flesh,<br>and your sons and&nbsp;your daughters shall prophesy,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and your young men shall see visions,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and your old men shall dream dreams;<br><sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>even on my male servants and female servants<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and&nbsp;they shall prophesy.<br><sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And I will show wonders in the heavens above<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and signs on the earth below,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;<br><sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>the sun shall be turned to darkness<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and the moon to blood,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;before&nbsp;the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.<br><sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And it shall come to pass that&nbsp;everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cMen of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth,&nbsp;a man attested to you by God&nbsp;with&nbsp;mighty works and wonders and signs that&nbsp;God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know\u2014&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>this Jesus,&nbsp;delivered up according to&nbsp;the definite plan and&nbsp;foreknowledge of God,&nbsp;you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because&nbsp;it was not possible for him to be held by it.&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>For David says concerning him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018I saw the Lord always before me,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;<br><sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;my flesh also will dwell&nbsp;in hope.<br><sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>For you will not abandon my soul to&nbsp;Hades,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or let your&nbsp;Holy One&nbsp;see corruption.<br><sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>You have made known to me the paths of life;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;you will make me full of gladness with your presence.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cBrothers, I may say to you with confidence about&nbsp;the patriarch David&nbsp;that he both died and&nbsp;was buried, and&nbsp;his tomb is with us to this day.&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that&nbsp;God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that&nbsp;he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>This Jesus&nbsp;God raised up,&nbsp;and of that we all are witnesses.&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>Being therefore&nbsp;exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from&nbsp;the Father&nbsp;the promise of the Holy Spirit,&nbsp;he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018The Lord said to my Lord,<br>\u201cSit at my right hand,<br><sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;until I make your enemies your footstool.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that&nbsp;God has made him&nbsp;both Lord and Christ, this Jesus&nbsp;whom you crucified.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>Now when&nbsp;they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, \u201cBrothers,&nbsp;what shall we do?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>And Peter said to them,&nbsp;\u201cRepent and&nbsp;be baptized every one of you&nbsp;in the name of Jesus Christ&nbsp;for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive&nbsp;the gift of the Holy Spirit.&nbsp;<sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>For&nbsp;the promise is for you and&nbsp;for your children and for all&nbsp;who are far off, everyone&nbsp;whom the Lord our God calls to himself.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying,&nbsp;\u201cSave yourselves from this&nbsp;crooked generation.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>41&nbsp;<\/sup>So those who received his word were baptized, and&nbsp;there were added that day about three thousand souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fellowship of the Believers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>42&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;they devoted themselves to the apostles&#8217;&nbsp;teaching and the&nbsp;fellowship, to&nbsp;the breaking of bread and the prayers.&nbsp;<sup>43&nbsp;<\/sup>And awe&nbsp;came upon every soul, and&nbsp;many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.&nbsp;<sup>44&nbsp;<\/sup>And all who believed were together and&nbsp;had all things in common.&nbsp;<sup>45&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.&nbsp;<sup>46&nbsp;<\/sup>And day by day,&nbsp;attending the temple&nbsp;together and&nbsp;breaking bread in their homes, they received their food&nbsp;with glad and generous hearts,<sup>47&nbsp;<\/sup>praising God and&nbsp;having favor with all the people. The coming of the Holy Spirit and Peter\u2019s sermon at Pentecost. These are two incredible events because (1) the Holy Spirit is now able to indwell believers when previously he would only rest on someone for a period of time (see the Prophets), and (2) Peter\u2019s sermon at Pentecost is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, sermons ever preached.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">However, I want to direct our focus to verses 42-47 and the fellowship of the believers. I want us to frame this in the context of a Life Group and see how the actions of the early church mirror our own Life Group core values: Invite, Learn, and Love.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">First, we<strong> invite<\/strong> people into our lives so that they will invite Jesus into theirs. The early church \u201cbroke bread together and had fellowship with one another\u201d (v. 42). They also attended the temple together and shared meals in each other\u2019s homes. Because of this, they found favor with all people (v. 46-47).&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Second, we<strong> learn<\/strong> to follow Jesus. Similarly, the early church \u201cdevoted themselves to the apostles\u2019 teaching\u201d (v. 42).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Third, we<strong> love<\/strong> others by caring and ministering to them in the context of biblical community. Acts 2:44-45 states, \u201cAnd all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.\u201d (v. 44-45). It\u2019s important to note that the early church exercised voluntary generosity, it was not mandated.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">How are you living out these core values in your Life Group?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, we read about two monumental events in church history.
