For they make\u00a0their phylacteries broad and\u00a0their fringes long,\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>and they\u00a0love the place of honor at feasts and\u00a0the best seats in the synagogues\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>and\u00a0greetings in\u00a0the marketplaces and being called\u00a0rabbi\u00a0by others.\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are\u00a0all brothers.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>And call no man your father on earth, for\u00a0you have one Father, who is in heaven.\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor,\u00a0the Christ.\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>The greatest among you shall be your servant.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut woe\u00a0to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you\u00a0shut the kingdom of heaven in people&#8217;s faces. For you\u00a0neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single\u00a0proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a\u00a0child of\u00a0hell\u00a0as yourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWoe to&nbsp;you,&nbsp;blind guides, who say,&nbsp;\u2018If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or&nbsp;the temple that has made the gold sacred?&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>And you say, \u2018If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by&nbsp;the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or&nbsp;the altar that makes the gift sacred?&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by&nbsp;him who dwells in it.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>And whoever swears by&nbsp;heaven swears by&nbsp;the throne of God and by&nbsp;him who sits upon it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For&nbsp;you tithe mint and dill and&nbsp;cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law:&nbsp;justice and mercy and faithfulness.&nbsp;These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing&nbsp;a camel!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For&nbsp;you clean the outside of&nbsp;the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of&nbsp;greed and self-indulgence.&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of&nbsp;the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like&nbsp;whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people&#8217;s bones and&nbsp;all uncleanness.&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>So you also&nbsp;outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of&nbsp;hypocrisy and lawlessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>saying, \u2018If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.\u2019\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>Thus you witness against yourselves that you are\u00a0sons of those who murdered the prophets.\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.\u00a0<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>You serpents,\u00a0you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to\u00a0hell?\u00a0<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore\u00a0I send you\u00a0prophets and wise men and\u00a0scribes,\u00a0some of whom you will kill and crucify, and\u00a0some you will\u00a0flog in your synagogues and\u00a0persecute from town to town,\u00a0<sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>so that on you may come all\u00a0the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous\u00a0Abel to the blood of\u00a0Zechariah the son of Barachiah,\u00a0whom you murdered between\u00a0the sanctuary and\u00a0the altar.\u00a0<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>Truly, I say to you,\u00a0all these things will come upon this generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lament over Jerusalem<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cO Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that&nbsp;kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it!
