{"id":162,"date":"2019-12-16T00:30:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T06:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=162"},"modified":"2019-12-12T15:24:41","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T21:24:41","slug":"luke-day-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/luke-day-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Luke Chapter 16"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Day 16: December 16, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 16 includes two parables about wealth. Jesus told his disciples the first parable. The second was directed to the Pharisees because of their response to the first. It is interesting and perhaps a bit confusing at first that Jesus would use an example of an unscrupulous (various commentaries call him shrewd and even unjust) manager to teach a lesson about using wealth for kingdom purposes, but that is what Jesus does. His point is that the wise use of wealth by believers can result in others entering the kingdom of God. This parable produced a strong negative reaction in the Pharisees, and the second parable of the rich man (symbolizing the Pharisees) and Lazarus proves Jesus\u2019 point that having riches should not be equated with righteousness. Unfortunately, the Pharisees refused to believe the Scriptures and wanted signs, but in the end, they would not believe any sign no matter how great \u2013 even the resurrection of the dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-4242971 ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-4242971 .ugb-4242971-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-4242971-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-4242971-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Luke 16<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Parable of the Dishonest Manager<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>He also said to the disciples,&nbsp;\u201cThere was a rich man who had&nbsp;a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions.&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>And he called him and said to him, \u2018What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your&nbsp;management, for you can no longer be manager.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>And the manager said to himself, \u2018What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>So, summoning his master&#8217;s debtors one by one, he said to the first, \u2018How much do you owe my master?\u2019&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>He said, \u2018A hundred measures&nbsp;of oil.\u2019 He said to him, \u2018Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>Then he said to another, \u2018And how much do you owe?\u2019 He said, \u2018A hundred measures&nbsp;of wheat.\u2019 He said to him, \u2018Take your bill, and write eighty.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>The master commended the dishonest manager for his&nbsp;shrewdness. For&nbsp;the sons of this world&nbsp;are&nbsp;more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than&nbsp;the sons of light.&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And I tell you,&nbsp;make friends for yourselves by means of&nbsp;unrighteous wealth,&nbsp;so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cOne who is&nbsp;faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches?&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And if you have not been faithful in&nbsp;that which is another&#8217;s, who will give you that which is your own?&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Law and the Kingdom of God<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>The Pharisees, who were&nbsp;lovers of money, heard all these things, and they&nbsp;ridiculed him.&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cYou are those who&nbsp;justify yourselves before men, but&nbsp;God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men&nbsp;is an abomination in the sight of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cThe Law and the Prophets were until John; since then&nbsp;the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and&nbsp;everyone forces his way into it.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Divorce and Remarriage<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cEveryone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rich Man and Lazarus<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cThere was a rich man who was clothed in&nbsp;purple and fine linen and&nbsp;who feasted sumptuously every day.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>And at his gate&nbsp;was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>who desired to be fed with&nbsp;what fell from the rich man&#8217;s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>The poor man died and was carried by&nbsp;the angels&nbsp;to Abraham&#8217;s side.&nbsp;The rich man also died and was buried,&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>and in&nbsp;Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and&nbsp;saw Abraham far off and Lazarus&nbsp;at his side.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And he called out,&nbsp;\u2018Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and&nbsp;cool my tongue, for&nbsp;I am in anguish in this flame.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>But Abraham said, \u2018Child, remember that&nbsp;you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said, \u2018Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father&#8217;s house\u2014&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>for I have five brothers\u2014so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>But Abraham said, \u2018They have&nbsp;Moses and the Prophets;&nbsp;let them hear them.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said, \u2018No,&nbsp;father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>He said to him, \u2018If they do not hear&nbsp;Moses and the Prophets,&nbsp;neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#ededed\" class=\"has-background\">The Holy Bible, English Standard Version\u00ae (ESV\u00ae), copyright \u00a9 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-843d310 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-843d310 hr.ugb-divider__hr{background-color:#dddddd !important;height:1px !important;width:50% !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-843d310 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Based on Jesus\u2019 teaching, especially 16:13, who or what are some of the masters you have served in the past?
