{"id":160,"date":"2019-12-18T00:30:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T06:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=160"},"modified":"2019-12-12T15:31:26","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T21:31:26","slug":"luke-day-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/luke-day-18\/","title":{"rendered":"Luke Chapter 18"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Day 18: December 18, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again in chapter 18 Jesus addresses two groups of people with two different parables, the first were disciples and the second were \u201csome who were confident in their own righteousness (18:9).\u201d\u00a0 The first parable describes a widow who is persistent in presenting her case to a judge. The same persistence should be a trait of believers as we pray to God. We pray with hope because God is good and faithful. The second parable confronts the self-righteousness of the Pharisees by comparing the pompous prayers of a Pharisee with the humble prayers of a tax collector. Again, Jesus makes a person of lowly relputation in Jewish society into the example to follow. This further enrages the religious leaders. Luke continues to reveal Jesus\u2019 true identity as the Son of God through interactions like the one with the rich ruler. Jesus says, \u201cNo one is good but God alone.\u201d And the one speaking those words was God himself, who despite His teaching and healing ministry, is misunderstood by his very own disciples. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-99e8a8b ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper.ugb-container__content-wrapper{width:100% !important}.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-99e8a8b .ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-container__wrapper ugb-99e8a8b-wrapper ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-99e8a8b-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Luke 18<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Parable of the Persistent Widow<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought&nbsp;always to pray and not&nbsp;lose heart.&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>He said,&nbsp;\u201cIn a certain city there was a judge who&nbsp;neither feared God nor respected man.&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, \u2018Give me justice against my adversary.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself,&nbsp;\u2018Though I neither fear God nor respect man,&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Lord said,&nbsp;\u201cHear what the unrighteous judge says.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;will not God give justice to&nbsp;his elect,&nbsp;who cry to him day and night?&nbsp;Will he delay long over them?&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>I tell you, he will give justice to them&nbsp;speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes,&nbsp;will he find faith on earth?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pharisee and the Tax Collector<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>He also told this parable to some&nbsp;who trusted&nbsp;in themselves that they were righteous,&nbsp;and treated others with contempt:&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cTwo men&nbsp;went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>The Pharisee,&nbsp;standing by himself, prayed&nbsp;thus: \u2018God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>I fast twice a week;&nbsp;I give tithes of all that I get.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>But the tax collector,&nbsp;standing far off,&nbsp;would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but&nbsp;beat his breast, saying, \u2018God,&nbsp;be merciful to me, a sinner!\u2019&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For&nbsp;everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let the Children Come to Me<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they&nbsp;rebuked them.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>But Jesus called them to him, saying,&nbsp;\u201cLet the children come to me, and&nbsp;do not hinder them,&nbsp;for to such belongs the kingdom of God.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>Truly, I say to you, whoever does not&nbsp;receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rich Ruler<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>And a ruler asked him, \u201cGood Teacher, what must I do to&nbsp;inherit eternal life?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus said to him,&nbsp;\u201cWhy do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>You know the commandments:&nbsp;\u2018Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said,&nbsp;\u201cAll these I have kept from my youth.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>When Jesus heard this, he said to him,&nbsp;\u201cOne thing you still lack.&nbsp;Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have&nbsp;treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said,&nbsp;\u201cHow difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter&nbsp;the kingdom of God!&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter&nbsp;the kingdom of God.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>Those who heard it said, \u201cThen who can be saved?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>But he said,&nbsp;\u201cWhat is impossible with man is possible with God.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>And Peter said, \u201cSee,&nbsp;we have left our homes and followed you.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cTruly, I say to you,&nbsp;there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers&nbsp;or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>who will not receive&nbsp;many times more&nbsp;in this time, and in&nbsp;the age to come eternal life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>And taking the twelve, he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cSee,&nbsp;we are going up to Jerusalem, and&nbsp;everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>For he will be&nbsp;delivered over to the Gentiles and will be&nbsp;mocked and shamefully treated and&nbsp;spit upon.&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on&nbsp;the third day he will rise.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>But they understood none of these things.&nbsp;This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>As he drew near to Jericho,&nbsp;a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.&nbsp;<sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant.&nbsp;<sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>They told him,&nbsp;\u201cJesus of Nazareth is passing by.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>And he cried out, \u201cJesus,&nbsp;Son of David, have mercy on me!\u201d&nbsp;<sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>And those who were in front&nbsp;rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, \u201cSon of David, have mercy on me!\u201d&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him,&nbsp;<sup>41&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWhat do you want me to do for you?\u201d&nbsp;He said, \u201cLord, let me recover my sight.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>42&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus said to him,&nbsp;\u201cRecover your sight;&nbsp;your faith has&nbsp;made you well.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>43&nbsp;<\/sup>And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him,&nbsp;glorifying God.
