class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-01d158d-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acts 15:1-41<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Jerusalem Council<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>But some men came down from Judea and were teaching\u00a0the brothers, \u201cUnless you are\u00a0circumcised\u00a0according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.\u201d\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and\u00a0debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and\u00a0some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to\u00a0the apostles and the elders about this question.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>So,\u00a0being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria,\u00a0describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and\u00a0brought great joy to all\u00a0the brothers.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and\u00a0the apostles and the elders, and\u00a0they declared all that God had done with them.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>But some believers who belonged to\u00a0the party of the Pharisees rose up and said,\u00a0\u201cIt is necessary\u00a0to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>The&nbsp;apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And after there had been much&nbsp;debate, Peter stood up and said to them, \u201cBrothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you,&nbsp;that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear&nbsp;the word of&nbsp;the gospel and believe.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And God,&nbsp;who knows the heart,&nbsp;bore witness to them,&nbsp;by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us,&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>and&nbsp;he made no distinction between us and them,&nbsp;having cleansed their hearts&nbsp;by faith.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>Now, therefore, why&nbsp;are you putting God to the test&nbsp;by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples&nbsp;that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>But we&nbsp;believe that we will be&nbsp;saved through&nbsp;the grace of the Lord Jesus,&nbsp;just as they will.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul&nbsp;as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>After they finished speaking,&nbsp;James replied, \u201cBrothers, listen to me.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them&nbsp;a people for his name.&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u201c\u2018After this I will return,<br>and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen;<br>I will rebuild its ruins,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and I will restore it,<br><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>that the remnant\u00a0of mankind\u00a0may seek the Lord,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and all the Gentiles\u00a0who are called by my name,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0says the Lord, who makes these things\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>known from of old.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>Therefore&nbsp;my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who&nbsp;turn to God,&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>but should write to them&nbsp;to abstain from&nbsp;the things polluted by idols, and from&nbsp;sexual immorality, and from&nbsp;what has been strangled, and from&nbsp;blood.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him,&nbsp;for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Council&#8217;s Letter to Gentile Believers<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>Then it seemed good to\u00a0the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called\u00a0Barsabbas, and\u00a0Silas, leading men among\u00a0the brothers,\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>with the following letter:\u00a0\u201cThe brothers, both\u00a0the apostles and the elders, to the brothers\u00a0who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia,\u00a0greetings.\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>Since we have heard that\u00a0some persons have gone out from us and\u00a0troubled you\u00a0with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions,\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>it has seemed good to us, having come\u00a0to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our\u00a0beloved Barnabas and Paul,\u00a0<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>men who have\u00a0risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>We have therefore sent\u00a0Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth.\u00a0<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>For it has seemed good\u00a0to the Holy Spirit and\u00a0to us\u00a0to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements:\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>that you abstain from\u00a0what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.
