And they had&nbsp;John to&nbsp;assist them.&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain&nbsp;magician,&nbsp;a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>He was with&nbsp;the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>But Elymas the&nbsp;magician (for that is the meaning of his name)&nbsp;opposed them, seeking to turn&nbsp;the proconsul away from the faith.&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>But Saul, who was also called Paul,&nbsp;filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>and said, \u201cYou&nbsp;son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and&nbsp;villainy, will you not stop&nbsp;making crooked&nbsp;the straight paths of the Lord?&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And now, behold,&nbsp;the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.\u201d Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking&nbsp;people to lead him by the hand.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at&nbsp;the teaching of the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul and Barnabas at Antioch in Pisidia<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And&nbsp;John left them and returned&nbsp;to Jerusalem,&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And&nbsp;on the Sabbath day&nbsp;they went into the synagogue and sat down.&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>After&nbsp;the reading from&nbsp;the Law and the Prophets,&nbsp;the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, \u201cBrothers, if you have any&nbsp;word of encouragement for the people, say it.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>So Paul stood up, and&nbsp;motioning with his hand said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMen of Israel and\u00a0you who fear God, listen.\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>The God of this people Israel\u00a0chose our fathers and\u00a0made the people great\u00a0during their stay in the land of Egypt, and\u00a0with uplifted arm he led them out of it.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>And for about\u00a0forty years\u00a0he put up with\u00a0them in the wilderness.\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0after destroying\u00a0seven nations in the land of Canaan,\u00a0he gave them their land as an inheritance.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>All this took about 450 years. And after that\u00a0he gave them judges until\u00a0Samuel the prophet.\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Then\u00a0they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul\u00a0the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0when he had removed him,\u00a0he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said,\u00a0\u2018I have found in David the son of Jesse\u00a0a man after my heart,\u00a0who will do all my will.\u2019\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>Of this man&#8217;s offspring God has brought to Israel\u00a0a Savior, Jesus,\u00a0as he promised.\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>Before his coming,\u00a0John had proclaimed\u00a0a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>And as John was finishing his course,\u00a0he said, \u2018What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cBrothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you&nbsp;who fear God, to us has been sent&nbsp;the message of&nbsp;this salvation.&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because&nbsp;they did not recognize him nor understand&nbsp;the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath,&nbsp;fulfilled them by condemning him.&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;though they found in him no guilt worthy of death,&nbsp;they asked Pilate to have him executed.&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>And when&nbsp;they had carried out all that was written of him,&nbsp;they took him down from&nbsp;the tree and laid him in a tomb.&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;God raised him from the dead,&nbsp;<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>and for many days&nbsp;he appeared to those&nbsp;who had come up with him&nbsp;from Galilee to Jerusalem,&nbsp;who are now&nbsp;his witnesses to the people.&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>And we bring you the good news&nbsp;that what God promised to the fathers,&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018You are my Son,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;today I have begotten you.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead,&nbsp;no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018I will give you&nbsp;the holy and sure blessings of David.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>Therefore he says also in another psalm,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018You will not let your Holy One see corruption.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>For David, after he had\u00a0served the purpose of God in his own generation,\u00a0fell asleep and\u00a0was laid with his fathers and saw corruption,\u00a0<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>but he whom\u00a0God raised up did not see corruption.\u00a0<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>Let it be known to you therefore, brothers,\u00a0that through this man\u00a0forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,\u00a0<sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>and by him\u00a0everyone who believes is freed\u00a0from everything\u00a0from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.\u00a0<sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>41&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201c\u2018Look, you scoffers,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;be astounded and perish;<br>for I am doing a work in your days,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>42&nbsp;<\/sup>As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath.&nbsp;<sup>43&nbsp;<\/sup>And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and&nbsp;devout&nbsp;converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them&nbsp;to continue in&nbsp;the grace of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>44\u00a0<\/sup>The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.\u00a0<sup>45\u00a0<\/sup>But\u00a0when the Jews\u00a0saw the crowds, they were filled with\u00a0jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul,\u00a0reviling him.\u00a0<sup>46\u00a0<\/sup>And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, \u201cIt was necessary that the word of God\u00a0be spoken first to you.\u00a0Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves\u00a0unworthy of eternal life, behold, we\u00a0are turning to the Gentiles.\u00a0<sup>47\u00a0<\/sup>For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018I have made you&nbsp;a light for the Gentiles,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;that you may&nbsp;bring salvation to the ends of the earth.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>48\u00a0<\/sup>And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and\u00a0glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.\u00a0<sup>49\u00a0<\/sup>And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region.\u00a0<sup>50\u00a0<\/sup>But the Jews incited the devout\u00a0women of high standing and the leading men of the city,\u00a0stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and\u00a0drove them out of their district.\u00a0<sup>51\u00a0<\/sup>But they\u00a0shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.\u00a0<sup>52\u00a0<\/sup>And the disciples were filled\u00a0with joy and\u00a0with the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 14<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul and Barnabas at Iconium<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Now at Iconium\u00a0they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>But the\u00a0unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against\u00a0the brothers.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for\u00a0the Lord, who bore witness to\u00a0the word of his grace,\u00a0granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>But the people of the city\u00a0were divided;\u00a0some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers,\u00a0to mistreat them and\u00a0to stone them,\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>they learned of it and\u00a0fled to\u00a0Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country,\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>and there they continued to preach the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul and Barnabas at Lystra<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was\u00a0crippled from birth and had never walked.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and\u00a0seeing that he had faith to be made well,\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>said in a loud voice, \u201cStand upright on your feet.\u201d And he\u00a0sprang up and began walking.\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian,\u00a0\u201cThe gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!\u201d\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Barnabas they called\u00a0Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>And the priest of\u00a0Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and\u00a0wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they\u00a0tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out,\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cMen,\u00a0why are you doing these things?
