And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>And they were both\u00a0righteous before God, walking\u00a0blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>But they had no child, because\u00a0Elizabeth was barren, and\u00a0both were advanced in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>Now&nbsp;while he was serving as priest before God when&nbsp;his division was on duty,&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot&nbsp;to enter&nbsp;the temple of the Lord and burn incense.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>And the whole multitude of the people&nbsp;were praying&nbsp;outside at the hour of incense.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of&nbsp;the altar of incense.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and&nbsp;fear fell upon him.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>But the angel said to him, \u201cDo not be afraid, Zechariah, for&nbsp;your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and&nbsp;you shall call his name John.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>And you will have joy and gladness, and many will&nbsp;rejoice at his birth,&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>for he will be&nbsp;great before the Lord. And&nbsp;he must not drink wine or strong&nbsp;drink, and&nbsp;he will be&nbsp;filled with the Holy Spirit,&nbsp;even from his mother&#8217;s womb.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God,&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>and&nbsp;he will go before him&nbsp;in the spirit and power of Elijah,&nbsp;to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and&nbsp;the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,&nbsp;to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>And Zechariah said to the angel,&nbsp;\u201cHow shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And the angel answered him, \u201cI am&nbsp;Gabriel.&nbsp;I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>And behold,&nbsp;you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in&nbsp;the temple.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in&nbsp;the temple. And&nbsp;he kept making signs to them and remained mute.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;when his time of&nbsp;service was ended, he went to his home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying,&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cThus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me,&nbsp;to take away my reproach among people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Birth of Jesus Foretold<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>In the sixth month the angel\u00a0Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named\u00a0Nazareth,\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>to a virgin betrothed\u00a0to a man whose name was Joseph,\u00a0of the house of David. And the virgin&#8217;s name was Mary.\u00a0<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>And he came to her and said, \u201cGreetings,\u00a0O favored one,\u00a0the Lord is with you!\u201d\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>But\u00a0she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>And the angel said to her, \u201cDo not be afraid, Mary, for\u00a0you have found favor with God.\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>And behold,\u00a0you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and\u00a0you shall call his name Jesus.\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>He will be great and will be called the Son of\u00a0the Most High. And the Lord God\u00a0will give to him the throne of\u00a0his father David,\u00a0<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>and he will reign over the house of Jacob\u00a0forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>And Mary said to the angel, \u201cHow will this be, since I am a virgin?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>And the angel answered her,\u00a0\u201cThe Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of\u00a0the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born\u00a0will be called\u00a0holy\u2014the Son of God.\u00a0<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her\u00a0who was called barren.\u00a0<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>For\u00a0nothing will be impossible with God.\u201d\u00a0<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>And Mary said, \u201cBehold, I am the servant\u00a0of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.\u201d And\u00a0the angel departed from her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mary Visits Elizabeth<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>In those days Mary arose and went with haste into\u00a0the hill country, to a town in Judah,\u00a0<sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.\u00a0<sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth\u00a0was filled with the Holy Spirit,\u00a0<sup>42\u00a0<\/sup>and she exclaimed with a loud cry,\u00a0\u201cBlessed are you among women, and\u00a0blessed is\u00a0the fruit of your womb!\u00a0<sup>43\u00a0<\/sup>And why is this granted to me that the mother of\u00a0my Lord should come to me?\u00a0<sup>44\u00a0<\/sup>For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.\u00a0<sup>45\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0blessed is she who believed that there would be\u00a0a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mary&#8217;s Song of Praise: The Magnificat<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>46&nbsp;<\/sup>And Mary said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy&nbsp;soul&nbsp;magnifies the Lord,<br><sup>47&nbsp;<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and my&nbsp;spirit rejoices in&nbsp;God my Savior,<br><sup>48&nbsp;<\/sup>for&nbsp;he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For behold, from now on all generations&nbsp;will call me blessed;<br><sup>49&nbsp;<\/sup>for&nbsp;he who is mighty&nbsp;has done great things for me,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and&nbsp;holy is his name.<br><sup>50&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;his mercy is for those who fear him<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;from generation to generation.<br><sup>51&nbsp;<\/sup>He has shown strength with his arm;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;<br><sup>52&nbsp;<\/sup>he has brought down the mighty from their thrones<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and exalted those of humble estate;<br><sup>53&nbsp;<\/sup>he has filled&nbsp;the hungry with good things,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and the rich&nbsp;he has sent away empty.<br><sup>54&nbsp;<\/sup>He has&nbsp;helped&nbsp;his servant Israel,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in remembrance of his mercy,<br><sup>55&nbsp;<\/sup>as he spoke to our fathers,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;to Abraham and to his offspring forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>56&nbsp;<\/sup>And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Birth of John the Baptist<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>57&nbsp;<\/sup>Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son.&nbsp;<sup>58&nbsp;<\/sup>And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord&nbsp;had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.&nbsp;<sup>59&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father,&nbsp;<sup>60&nbsp;<\/sup>but his mother answered, \u201cNo;&nbsp;he shall be called John.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>61&nbsp;<\/sup>And they said to her, \u201cNone of your relatives is called by this name.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>62&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called.&nbsp;<sup>63&nbsp;<\/sup>And he asked for&nbsp;a writing tablet and wrote,&nbsp;\u201cHis name is John.\u201d And they all wondered.&nbsp;<sup>64&nbsp;<\/sup>And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue&nbsp;loosed, and he spoke,&nbsp;blessing God.&nbsp;<sup>65&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;fear came on all their neighbors.
