He went down to\u00a0Joppa and found a ship going to\u00a0Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to\u00a0Tarshish,\u00a0away from the presence of the\u00a0Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened&nbsp;to break up.&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>Then the mariners were afraid, and&nbsp;each cried out to his god. And&nbsp;they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>So the captain came and said to him, \u201cWhat do you mean, you sleeper? Arise,&nbsp;call out to your god!&nbsp;Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jonah Is Thrown into the Sea<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And they said to one another, \u201cCome, let us&nbsp;cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.\u201d So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>Then they said to him, \u201cTell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cI am a Hebrew, and I fear&nbsp;the&nbsp;Lord, the God of heaven,&nbsp;who made the sea and the dry land.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, \u201cWhat is this that you have done!\u201d For the men knew that&nbsp;he was fleeing from the presence of the&nbsp;Lord, because he had told them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>Then they said to him, \u201cWhat shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?\u201d For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>He said to them, \u201cPick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you,\u00a0for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.\u201d\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Nevertheless, the men rowed hard\u00a0to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore they called out to the\u00a0Lord, \u201cO\u00a0Lord, let us not perish for this man&#8217;s life, and\u00a0lay not on us innocent blood,\u00a0for you, O\u00a0Lord, have done as it pleased you.\u201d\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea,\u00a0and the sea ceased from its raging.\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>Then the men feared the\u00a0Lord\u00a0exceedingly,\u00a0and they offered a sacrifice to the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and made vows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Great Fish Swallows Jonah<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0appointed\u00a0a great fish to swallow up Jonah.\u00a0And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jonah&#8217;s Prayer<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Then Jonah prayed to the\u00a0Lord\u00a0his God from the belly of the fish,\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>saying,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI called out to the&nbsp;Lord, out of my distress,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and he answered me;<br>out of the belly of Sheol I cried,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and you heard my voice.<br><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>For you cast me into the deep,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;into the heart of the seas,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and the flood surrounded me;<br>all your waves and your billows<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;passed over me.<br><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>Then I said, \u2018I am driven away<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;from your sight;<br>yet I shall again look<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;upon your holy temple.\u2019<br><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>The waters closed in over me&nbsp;to take my life;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the deep surrounded me;<br>weeds were wrapped about my head<br><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;at the roots of the mountains.<br>I went down to the land<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;whose bars closed upon me forever;<br>yet you brought up my life from the pit,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;O&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;my God.<br><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>When my life was fainting away,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I remembered the&nbsp;Lord,<br>and my prayer came to you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;into your holy temple.<br><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>Those who pay regard to vain idols<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;forsake their hope of steadfast love.<br><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>But I with the voice of thanksgiving<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;will sacrifice to you;<br>what I have vowed I will pay.<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Salvation belongs to the&nbsp;Lord!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jonah Goes to Nineveh<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Then the word of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came to Jonah the second time, saying,\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cArise, go to\u00a0Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.\u201d\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the\u00a0Lord. Now\u00a0Nineveh was an exceedingly great city,\u00a0three days&#8217; journey in breadth.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>Jonah began to go into the city, going a day&#8217;s journey. And he called out, \u201cYet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!\u201d\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>And the people of Nineveh believed God.\u00a0They called for a fast and\u00a0put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People of Nineveh Repent<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>The word reached\u00a0the king of Nineveh, and\u00a0he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth,\u00a0and sat in ashes.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh,\u00a0\u201cBy the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor\u00a0beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water,\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>but let man and\u00a0beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God.\u00a0Let everyone turn from his evil way and from\u00a0the violence that is in his hands.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>Who knows? God may turn and relent\u00a0and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>When God saw what they did,\u00a0how they turned from their evil way,\u00a0God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jonah&#8217;s Anger and the&nbsp;Lord&#8217;s Compassion<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>But it displeased Jonah exceedingly,\u00a0and\u00a0he was angry.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And he prayed to the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and said, \u201cO\u00a0Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country?\u00a0That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a\u00a0gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and\u00a0relenting from disaster.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore now, O\u00a0Lord, please take my life from me,\u00a0for it is better for me to die than to live.\u201d\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cDo you do well to be angry?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city and\u00a0made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>Now the\u00a0Lord\u00a0God appointed a plant\u00a0and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort.\u00a0So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant, so that it withered.\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching\u00a0east wind,\u00a0and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he\u00a0was faint.
