Ahab did more to provoke the\u00a0Lord, the God of Israel, to anger\u00a0than all the kings of Israel who were before him.\u00a0<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>In his days Hiel of Bethel built\u00a0Jericho. He laid its foundation at the cost of Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the\u00a0Lord, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 17<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elijah Predicts a Drought<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Now Elijah the Tishbite, of\u00a0Tishbe\u00a0in Gilead, said to Ahab,\u00a0\u201cAs the\u00a0Lord, the God of Israel, lives,\u00a0before whom I stand,\u00a0there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.\u201d\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And the word of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came to him:\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cDepart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.\u201d\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>So he went and did according to the word of the\u00a0Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Widow of Zarephath<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>Then the word of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;came to him,&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cArise, go to&nbsp;Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>So he arose and went to&nbsp;Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there&nbsp;gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, \u201cBring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, \u201cBring me a morsel of bread in your hand.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And she said,&nbsp;\u201cAs the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And Elijah said to her, \u201cDo not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>For thus says the&nbsp;Lord, the God of Israel, \u2018The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;sends rain upon the earth.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;that he spoke by Elijah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elijah Raises the Widow&#8217;s Son<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill. And his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>And she said to Elijah,\u00a0\u201cWhat have you against me, O\u00a0man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!\u201d\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to her, \u201cGive me your son.\u201d And he took him from her arms and carried him up into the upper chamber where he lodged, and laid him on his own bed.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>And he cried to the\u00a0Lord, \u201cO\u00a0Lord\u00a0my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son?\u201d\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the\u00a0Lord, \u201cO\u00a0Lord\u00a0my God, let this child&#8217;s life\u00a0come into him again.\u201d\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and\u00a0he revived.\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, \u201cSee, your son lives.\u201d\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>And the woman said to Elijah,\u00a0\u201cNow I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0in your mouth is truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 18<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elijah Confronts Ahab<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>After many days the word of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, \u201cGo, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.\u201d\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>And Ahab called Obadiah, who was\u00a0over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the\u00a0Lord\u00a0greatly,\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>and\u00a0when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the\u00a0Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.)\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>And Ahab said to Obadiah, \u201cGo through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.\u201d\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, \u201cIs it you, my lord Elijah?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And he answered him, \u201cIt is I. Go, tell your lord, \u2018Behold, Elijah is here.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said, \u201cHow have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>As the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, \u2018He is not here,\u2019 he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And now you say, \u2018Go, tell your lord, \u201cBehold, Elijah is here.\u201d\u2019&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And as soon as I have gone from you,&nbsp;the Spirit of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;from my youth.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>Has it not been told my lord what I did&nbsp;when Jezebel killed the prophets of the&nbsp;Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the&nbsp;Lord&#8217;s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water?&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>And now you say, \u2018Go, tell your lord, \u201cBehold, Elijah is here\u201d\u2019; and he will kill me.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>And Elijah said,&nbsp;\u201cAs the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him,&nbsp;\u201cIs it you, you&nbsp;troubler of Israel?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>And he answered, \u201cI have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father&#8217;s house, because you have&nbsp;abandoned the commandments of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;and&nbsp;followed the Baals.&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount&nbsp;Carmel, and the&nbsp;450 prophets of Baal and&nbsp;the 400 prophets of Asherah,&nbsp;who eat at Jezebel&#8217;s table.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Prophets of Baal Defeated<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And Elijah came near to all the people and said, \u201cHow long&nbsp;will you go limping between two different opinions?&nbsp;If the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.\u201d And the people did not answer him a word.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Elijah said to the people,&nbsp;\u201cI, even I only, am left a prophet of the&nbsp;Lord, but Baal&#8217;s prophets are&nbsp;450 men.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it.&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the&nbsp;Lord, and the God who&nbsp;answers by fire, he is God.\u201d And all the people answered, \u201cIt is well spoken.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, \u201cChoose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, \u201cO Baal, answer us!\u201d But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made.&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, \u201cCry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>And they cried aloud and&nbsp;cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of&nbsp;the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>Then Elijah said to all the people, \u201cCome near to me.\u201d And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0that had been\u00a0thrown down.\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came, saying,\u00a0\u201cIsrael shall be your name,\u201d\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the\u00a0Lord. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs\u00a0of seed.\u00a0<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, \u201cFill four jars with water and\u00a0pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.\u201d\u00a0<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cDo it a second time.\u201d And they did it a second time. And he said, \u201cDo it a third time.\u201d And they did it a third time.\u00a0<sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>And at the time of&nbsp;the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, \u201cO&nbsp;Lord,&nbsp;God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that&nbsp;you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that&nbsp;I have done all these things at your word.&nbsp;<sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>Answer me, O&nbsp;Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O&nbsp;Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>Then the fire of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.&nbsp;<sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said,&nbsp;\u201cThe&nbsp;Lord, he is God; the&nbsp;Lord, he is God.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>And Elijah said to them, \u201cSeize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.\u201d And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to&nbsp;the brook Kishon and&nbsp;slaughtered them there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;Sends Rain<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>And Elijah said to Ahab, \u201cGo up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.\u201d\u00a0<sup>42\u00a0<\/sup>So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel.\u00a0And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees.\u00a0<sup>43\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to his servant, \u201cGo up now, look toward the sea.\u201d And he went up and looked and said, \u201cThere is nothing.\u201d And he said, \u201cGo again,\u201d seven times.\u00a0<sup>44\u00a0<\/sup>And at the seventh time he said, \u201cBehold,\u00a0a little cloud like a man&#8217;s hand is rising from the sea.\u201d And he said, \u201cGo up, say to Ahab, \u2018Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<sup>45\u00a0<\/sup>And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to\u00a0Jezreel.\u00a0<sup>46\u00a0<\/sup>And the hand of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0was on Elijah,\u00a0and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of\u00a0Jezreel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 19<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elijah Flees Jezebel<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how\u00a0he had killed all the prophets with the sword.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,\u00a0\u201cSo may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to\u00a0Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>But he himself went a day&#8217;s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree.&nbsp;And he asked that he might die, saying, \u201cIt is enough; now, O&nbsp;Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, \u201cArise and eat.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And the angel of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;came again a second time and touched him and said, \u201cArise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food&nbsp;forty days and forty nights to&nbsp;Horeb, the mount of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;Speaks to Elijah<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold,\u00a0the word of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came to him, and he said to him, \u201cWhat are you doing here, Elijah?\u201d\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>He said, \u201cI have been very\u00a0jealous for the\u00a0Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant,\u00a0thrown down your altars, and\u00a0killed your prophets with the sword,\u00a0and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.\u201d\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cGo out and\u00a0stand on the mount before the\u00a0Lord.\u201d And behold, the\u00a0Lord\u00a0passed by, and\u00a0a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the\u00a0Lord, but the\u00a0Lord\u00a0was not in the wind. And after the wind\u00a0an earthquake, but the\u00a0Lord\u00a0was not in the earthquake.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>And after the earthquake a fire, but the\u00a0Lord\u00a0was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>And when Elijah heard it,\u00a0he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold,\u00a0there came a voice to him and said, \u201cWhat are you doing here, Elijah?\u201d\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>He said,\u00a0\u201cI have been very jealous for the\u00a0Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant,\u00a0thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.\u201d\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to him, \u201cGo, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus.
