And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to you,\u00a0\u2018You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince\u00a0over Israel.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron,\u00a0and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron\u00a0before the\u00a0Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and\u00a0he reigned forty years.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>At Hebron he reigned over Judah\u00a0seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And the king and his men went to Jerusalem&nbsp;against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, \u201cYou will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off\u201d\u2014thinking, \u201cDavid cannot come in here.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion,&nbsp;that is, the city of David.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And David said on that day, \u201cWhoever would strike the Jebusites, let him get up the water shaft to attack \u2018the lame and the blind,\u2019 who are hated by David&#8217;s soul.\u201d Therefore it is said, \u201cThe blind and the lame shall not come into the house.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And David lived in the stronghold and called it&nbsp;the city of David. And David built the city all around from the&nbsp;Millo inward.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>And David became greater and greater, for the&nbsp;Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And David knew that the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And David took more&nbsp;concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to David.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Defeats the Philistines<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down\u00a0to the stronghold.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Now the Philistines had come and spread out in\u00a0the Valley of Rephaim.\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>And David\u00a0inquired of the\u00a0Lord, \u201cShall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?\u201d And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to David, \u201cGo up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.\u201d\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. And he said, \u201cThe\u00a0Lord\u00a0has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.\u201d\u00a0Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim.\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>And the Philistines left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>And the Philistines came up yet again\u00a0and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>And when David inquired of the\u00a0Lord, he said, \u201cYou shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees.\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself,\u00a0for then the\u00a0Lord\u00a0has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.\u201d\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>And David did as the\u00a0Lord\u00a0commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba\u00a0to Gezer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ark Brought to Jerusalem<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from\u00a0Baale-judah\u00a0to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0of hosts\u00a0who sits enthroned on the cherubim.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>And they carried the ark of God\u00a0on a new cart and brought it\u00a0out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio,\u00a0the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart,\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>with the ark of God,\u00a0and Ahio went before the ark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uzzah and the Ark<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the\u00a0Lord, with\u00a0songs\u00a0and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>And when they came to the threshing floor of\u00a0Nacon, Uzzah\u00a0put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>And the anger of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0was kindled against Uzzah, and\u00a0God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>And David was angry because the\u00a0Lord\u00a0had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah\u00a0to this day.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>And David was afraid of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0that day, and he said, \u201cHow can the ark of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0come to me?\u201d\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>So David was not willing to take the ark of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0into the city of David. But David took it aside\u00a0to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>And the ark of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months,\u00a0and the\u00a0Lord\u00a0blessed Obed-edom and all his household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And it was told King David, \u201cThe&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.\u201d&nbsp;So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom&nbsp;to the city of David with rejoicing.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And when&nbsp;those who bore the ark of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;had gone six steps,&nbsp;he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>And David&nbsp;danced before the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;with all his might. And David was&nbsp;wearing a linen ephod.&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;with shouting and with the sound of the horn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David and Michal<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>As the ark of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the\u00a0Lord, and she despised him in her heart.\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>And they brought in the ark of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and set it\u00a0in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it.\u00a0And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the\u00a0Lord.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings,\u00a0he blessed the people in the name of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0of hosts\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat,\u00a0and a cake of raisins to each one.\u00a0Then all the people departed, each to his house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, \u201cHow the king of Israel honored himself today,\u00a0uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants&#8217; female servants, as one of the\u00a0vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!\u201d\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>And David said to Michal, \u201cIt was before the\u00a0Lord,\u00a0who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince\u00a0over Israel, the people of the\u00a0Lord\u2014and I will celebrate before the\u00a0Lord.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your\u00a0eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.\u201d\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The&nbsp;Lord&#8217;s&nbsp;Covenant with David<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Now when the king lived in his house and the\u00a0Lord\u00a0had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies,\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>the king said to\u00a0Nathan the prophet, \u201cSee now, I dwell\u00a0in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells\u00a0in a tent.\u201d\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>And Nathan said to the king,\u00a0\u201cGo, do all that is in your heart, for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>But that same night the word of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came to Nathan,\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGo and tell my servant David, \u2018Thus says the\u00a0Lord:\u00a0Would you build me a house to dwell in?\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>I have not lived in a house\u00a0since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about\u00a0in a tent for my dwelling.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>In all places where\u00a0I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with\u00a0any of the judges\u00a0of Israel, whom I commanded\u00a0to shepherd my people Israel, saying, \u201cWhy have you not built me a house of cedar?\u201d\u2019\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, \u2018Thus says the\u00a0Lord\u00a0of hosts,\u00a0I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince\u00a0over my people Israel.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>And I will appoint a place for my people Israel\u00a0and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place\u00a0and be disturbed no more.\u00a0And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly,\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And\u00a0I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the\u00a0Lord\u00a0declares to you that\u00a0the\u00a0Lord\u00a0will make you a house.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>When your days are fulfilled and\u00a0you lie down with your fathers,\u00a0I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>He shall build a house for my name, and\u00a0I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity,\u00a0I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>but my steadfast love will not depart from him,\u00a0as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.\u00a0Your throne shall be established forever.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David&#8217;s Prayer of Gratitude<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Then King David went in and sat before the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and said,\u00a0\u201cWho am I, O Lord\u00a0God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord\u00a0God.\u00a0You have spoken also of your servant&#8217;s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord\u00a0God!\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>And what more can David say to you?\u00a0For you know your servant, O Lord\u00a0God!\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore you are great, O\u00a0Lord\u00a0God.\u00a0For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name\u00a0and doing for them\u00a0great and awesome things by driving out before your people,\u00a0whom\u00a0you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods?\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O\u00a0Lord, became their God.\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>And now, O\u00a0Lord\u00a0God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken.\u00a0<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>And your name will be magnified forever, saying, \u2018The\u00a0Lord\u00a0of hosts is God over Israel,\u2019 and the house of your servant David will be established before you.\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>For you, O\u00a0Lord\u00a0of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, \u2018I will build you a house.\u2019 Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.\u00a0<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>And now, O Lord\u00a0God, you are God, and\u00a0your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you.
