I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite,\u00a0for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.\u201d\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And Samuel said, \u201cHow can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.\u201d And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said, \u201cTake a heifer with you and say,\u00a0\u2018I have come to sacrifice to the\u00a0Lord.\u2019\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do.\u00a0And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.\u201d\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>Samuel did what the\u00a0Lord\u00a0commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city\u00a0came to meet him trembling and said,\u00a0\u201cDo you come peaceably?\u201d\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cPeaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the\u00a0Lord.\u00a0Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.\u201d And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>When they came, he looked on\u00a0Eliab and thought, \u201cSurely the\u00a0Lord&#8217;s anointed is before him.\u201d\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>But the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to Samuel,\u00a0\u201cDo not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the\u00a0Lord\u00a0sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance,\u00a0but the\u00a0Lord\u00a0looks on the heart.\u201d\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesse called\u00a0Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, \u201cNeither has the\u00a0Lord\u00a0chosen this one.\u201d\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesse made\u00a0Shammah pass by. And he said, \u201cNeither has the\u00a0Lord\u00a0chosen this one.\u201d\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, \u201cThe\u00a0Lord\u00a0has not chosen these.\u201d\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>Then Samuel said to Jesse, \u201cAre all your sons here?\u201d And he said,\u00a0\u201cThere remains yet the youngest,\u00a0but behold, he is keeping the sheep.\u201d And Samuel said to Jesse,\u00a0\u201cSend and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.\u201d\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>And he sent and brought him in. Now he was\u00a0ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cArise, anoint him, for this is he.\u201d\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Then Samuel took\u00a0the horn of oil\u00a0and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.\u00a0And the Spirit of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David in Saul&#8217;s Service<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>Now the Spirit of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0departed from Saul,\u00a0and a harmful spirit from the\u00a0Lord\u00a0tormented him.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>And Saul&#8217;s servants said to him, \u201cBehold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you.\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>Let our lord now command your servants\u00a0who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will\u00a0play it, and you will be well.\u201d\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>So Saul said to his servants, \u201cProvide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.\u201d\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>One of the young men answered, \u201cBehold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing,\u00a0a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence,\u00a0and the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is with him.\u201d\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, \u201cSend me David your son,\u00a0who is with the sheep.\u201d\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul.\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>And David came to Saul\u00a0and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, \u201cLet David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.\u201d\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre\u00a0and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 17<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David and Goliath<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Now the Philistines\u00a0gathered their armies for battle. And they were gathered at\u00a0Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and\u00a0Azekah, in\u00a0Ephes-dammim.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered, and encamped in\u00a0the Valley of Elah, and drew up in line of battle against the Philistines.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named\u00a0Goliath of\u00a0Gath, whose height was six\u00a0cubits\u00a0and a span.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels\u00a0of bronze.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>And he had bronze armor on his legs, and a\u00a0javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>The shaft of his spear was like a weaver&#8217;s beam, and his spear&#8217;s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron.\u00a0And his shield-bearer went before him.\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, \u201cWhy have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and\u00a0are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants\u00a0and serve us.\u201d\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>And the Philistine said,\u00a0\u201cI defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.\u201d\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Now David was\u00a0the son of an\u00a0Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah,\u00a0named Jesse,\u00a0who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And\u00a0the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>David was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul,\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>but David went back and forth from Saul\u00a0to feed his father&#8217;s sheep at Bethlehem.\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesse said to David his son, \u201cTake for your brothers an ephah\u00a0of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand.\u00a0See if your brothers are well, and bring some token from them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to&nbsp;the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army.&nbsp;<sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>And David left the&nbsp;things in charge of the keeper of the&nbsp;baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>As he talked with them, behold,&nbsp;the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke&nbsp;the same words as before. And David heard him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid.&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>And the men of Israel said, \u201cHave you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to&nbsp;defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches&nbsp;and will give him his daughter and make his father&#8217;s house free in Israel.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>And David said to the men who stood by him, \u201cWhat shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away&nbsp;the reproach from Israel? For who is this&nbsp;uncircumcised Philistine, that he should&nbsp;defy the armies of&nbsp;the living God?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>And the people answered him in the same way,&nbsp;\u201cSo shall it be done to the man who kills him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab&#8217;s anger was kindled against David, and he said, \u201cWhy have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>And David said, \u201cWhat have I done now? Was it not but a word?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke&nbsp;in the same way, and the people answered him again as before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him.&nbsp;<sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>And David said to Saul,&nbsp;\u201cLet no man&#8217;s heart fail because of him.&nbsp;Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>And Saul said to David, \u201cYou are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>But David said to Saul, \u201cYour servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock,&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.&nbsp;<sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them,&nbsp;for he has defied the armies of the living God.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>And David said,&nbsp;\u201cThe&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.\u201d And Saul said to David, \u201cGo,&nbsp;and the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;be with you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail,&nbsp;<sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, \u201cI cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.\u201d So David put them off.&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd&#8217;s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>41&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David,&nbsp;with his shield-bearer in front of him.&nbsp;<sup>42&nbsp;<\/sup>And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth,&nbsp;ruddy and handsome in appearance.&nbsp;<sup>43&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Philistine said to David, \u201cAm I&nbsp;a dog, that you come to me with sticks?\u201d And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.&nbsp;<sup>44&nbsp;<\/sup>The Philistine said to David, \u201cCome to me, and I will give your flesh&nbsp;to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>45&nbsp;<\/sup>Then David said to the Philistine, \u201cYou come to me with a sword and with a spear and with&nbsp;a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel,&nbsp;whom you have defied.&nbsp;<sup>46&nbsp;<\/sup>This day the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head.&nbsp;And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day&nbsp;to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth,&nbsp;that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,&nbsp;<sup>47&nbsp;<\/sup>and that all this assembly may know that&nbsp;the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;saves not with sword and spear.&nbsp;For the battle is the&nbsp;Lord&#8217;s, and he will give you into our hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>48&nbsp;<\/sup>When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.&nbsp;<sup>49&nbsp;<\/sup>And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>50\u00a0<\/sup>So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David.\u00a0<sup>51\u00a0<\/sup>Then David ran and stood over the Philistine\u00a0and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead,\u00a0they fled.\u00a0<sup>52\u00a0<\/sup>And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath\u00a0and the gates of\u00a0Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from\u00a0Shaaraim as far as\u00a0Gath and Ekron.\u00a0<sup>53\u00a0<\/sup>And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.\u00a0<sup>54\u00a0<\/sup>And David took\u00a0the head of the Philistine\u00a0and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>55\u00a0<\/sup>As soon as Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner,\u00a0the commander of the army, \u201cAbner,\u00a0whose son is this youth?\u201d And Abner said,\u00a0\u201cAs your soul lives, O king, I do not know.\u201d\u00a0<sup>56\u00a0<\/sup>And the king said, \u201cInquire whose son the boy is.\u201d\u00a0<sup>57\u00a0<\/sup>And as soon as David returned from the striking down of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul\u00a0with the head of the Philistine in his hand.\u00a0<sup>58\u00a0<\/sup>And Saul said to him, \u201cWhose son are you, young man?\u201d And David answered,\u00a0\u201cI am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 18<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David and Jonathan&#8217;s Friendship<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan\u00a0loved him as his own soul.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And Saul took him that day\u00a0and would not let him return to his father&#8217;s house.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because\u00a0he loved him as his own soul.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>And David went out\u00a0and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul&#8217;s servants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saul&#8217;s Jealousy of David<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine,\u00a0the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>And the women\u00a0sang to one another as they celebrated,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSaul has struck down his thousands,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and David his ten thousands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him.
