And the people of Israel\u00a0cried out for help to the\u00a0Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>When the people of Israel cried out to the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;on account of the Midianites,&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;sent a prophet to the people of Israel. And he said to them, \u201cThus says the&nbsp;Lord, the God of Israel:&nbsp;I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery.&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and&nbsp;drove them out before you and gave you their land.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>And I said to you, \u2018I am the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;your God;&nbsp;you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.\u2019 But you have not obeyed my voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Call of Gideon<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>Now the angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash\u00a0the Abiezrite, while his son\u00a0Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0the angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0appeared to him and said to him,\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0Lord\u00a0is with you, O mighty man of valor.\u201d\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>And Gideon said to him, \u201cPlease, my lord, if the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are\u00a0all his wonderful deeds\u00a0that our fathers recounted to us, saying, \u2018Did not the\u00a0Lord\u00a0bring us up from Egypt?\u2019 But now the\u00a0Lord\u00a0has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.\u201d\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0turned to him and said, \u201cGo in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian;\u00a0do not I send you?\u201d\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to him,\u00a0\u201cPlease, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold,\u00a0my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father&#8217;s house.\u201d\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to him,\u00a0\u201cBut I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.\u201d\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to him,\u00a0\u201cIf now I have found favor in your eyes, then\u00a0show me a sign that it is you who speak with me.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Please\u00a0do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.\u201d And he said, \u201cI will stay till you return.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>So Gideon went into his house\u00a0and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah\u00a0of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>And the angel of God said to him, \u201cTake the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them\u00a0on this rock, and\u00a0pour the broth over them.\u201d And he did so.\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Then the angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes.\u00a0And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0vanished from his sight.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the\u00a0Lord. And Gideon said,\u00a0\u201cAlas, O Lord\u00a0God! For now I have seen the angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0face to face.\u201d\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>But the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to him,\u00a0\u201cPeace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.\u201d\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>Then Gideon built an altar there to the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and called it,\u00a0The\u00a0Lord\u00a0Is Peace. To this day it still stands at\u00a0Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>That night the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;said to him, \u201cTake your father&#8217;s bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down&nbsp;the Asherah that is beside it&nbsp;<sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>and build an altar to the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;your God on the top of the&nbsp;stronghold here, with stones laid in due order. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;had told him. But because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gideon Destroys the Altar of Baal<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built.\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>And they said to one another, \u201cWho has done this thing?\u201d And after they had searched and inquired, they said, \u201cGideon the son of Joash has done this thing.\u201d\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>Then the men of the town said to Joash, \u201cBring out your son, that he may die, for he has broken down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it.\u201d\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>But Joash said to all who stood against him, \u201cWill you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been broken down.\u201d\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore on that day Gideon\u00a0was called\u00a0Jerubbaal, that is to say, \u201cLet Baal contend against him,\u201d because he broke down his altar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>Now&nbsp;all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and they crossed the Jordan and encamped in&nbsp;the Valley of Jezreel.&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;the Spirit of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;clothed Gideon,&nbsp;and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him.&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they too were called out to follow him.&nbsp;And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went up to meet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sign of the Fleece<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>Then Gideon said to God, \u201cIf you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said,\u00a0<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.\u201d\u00a0<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water.\u00a0<sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>Then Gideon said to God,\u00a0\u201cLet not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.\u201d\u00a0<sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gideon&#8217;s Three Hundred Men<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Then\u00a0Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside\u00a0the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them,\u00a0by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;said to Gideon, \u201cThe people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand,&nbsp;lest Israel boast over me, saying, \u2018My own hand has saved me.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,&nbsp;\u2018Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.\u2019\u201d Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>And the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;said to Gideon, \u201cThe people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, \u2018This one shall go with you,\u2019 shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, \u2018This one shall not go with you,\u2019 shall not go.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>So he brought the people down to the water. And the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;said to Gideon, \u201cEvery one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;said to Gideon,&nbsp;\u201cWith the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him&nbsp;in the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>That same&nbsp;night the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;said to him, \u201cArise, go down against the camp,&nbsp;for I have given it into your hand.&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.\u201d&nbsp;Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Midianites and the Amalekites and&nbsp;all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number,&nbsp;as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, \u201cBehold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>And his comrade answered, \u201cThis is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, \u201cArise, for the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;has given the host of Midian into your hand.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with&nbsp;torches inside the jars.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cLook at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout,&nbsp;\u2018For the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;and for Gideon.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gideon Defeats Midian<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow.\u00a0And they cried out, \u201cA sword for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and for Gideon!\u201d\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Every man stood in his place around the camp,\u00a0and all the army ran. They cried out and fled.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>When they blew the 300 trumpets,\u00a0the\u00a0Lord\u00a0set\u00a0every man&#8217;s sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,\u00a0as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>Gideon sent messengers throughout&nbsp;all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, \u201cCome down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as&nbsp;Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.\u201d So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.&nbsp;<sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>And they captured&nbsp;the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb&nbsp;at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb.
