For God said, \u201cLest the people\u00a0change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt.\u201d\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>But God\u00a0led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the people of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt equipped for battle.\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph\u00a0had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying,\u00a0\u201cGod will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones with you from here.\u201d\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0they moved on from Succoth and encamped at Etham, on the edge of the wilderness.\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0the\u00a0Lord\u00a0went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 14<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crossing the Red Sea<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1\u00a0<\/strong>Then the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to Moses,\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTell the people of Israel to\u00a0turn back and encamp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between\u00a0Migdol and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon; you shall encamp facing it, by the sea.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>For Pharaoh will say of the people of Israel, \u2018They are wandering in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.\u2019\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0I will harden Pharaoh&#8217;s heart, and he will pursue them, and I will\u00a0get glory over Pharaoh and all his host,\u00a0and the Egyptians shall know that I am the\u00a0Lord.\u201d And they did so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the&nbsp;mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, \u201cWhat is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>So he made ready his chariot and took his army with him,&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>and took&nbsp;six hundred chosen chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the people of Israel while&nbsp;the people of Israel were going out defiantly.&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>The&nbsp;Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh&#8217;s horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them&nbsp;encamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel&nbsp;cried out to the&nbsp;Lord.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>They&nbsp;said to Moses, \u201cIs it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt?&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>Is not this what&nbsp;we said to you in Egypt: \u2018Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians\u2019? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And Moses said to the people,&nbsp;\u201cFear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the&nbsp;Lord, which he will work for you today. For&nbsp;the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will fight for you, and you have only&nbsp;to be silent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;said to Moses, \u201cWhy do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>Lift up your staff, and&nbsp;stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and&nbsp;I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>And the Egyptians&nbsp;shall know that I am the&nbsp;Lord,&nbsp;when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them,\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night\u00a0without one coming near the other all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Then Moses\u00a0stretched out his hand over the sea, and the\u00a0Lord\u00a0drove the sea back by\u00a0a strong east wind all night and\u00a0made the sea dry land, and the waters were\u00a0divided.\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being\u00a0a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh&#8217;s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>And in the morning watch the\u00a0Lord\u00a0in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic,\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>clogging\u00a0their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, \u201cLet us flee from before Israel, for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0fights for them against the Egyptians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>Then the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to Moses,\u00a0\u201cStretch out your hand over the sea, that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.\u201d\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea\u00a0returned to its normal course when the morning appeared.
