I have sent to tell my lord, in order that\u00a0I may find favor in your sight.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, \u201cWe came to your brother Esau, and&nbsp;he is coming to meet you, and there are four hundred men with him.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Jacob was&nbsp;greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two camps,&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>thinking, \u201cIf Esau comes to the one camp and attacks it, then the camp that is left will escape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jacob said,&nbsp;\u201cO God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;who&nbsp;said to me, \u2018Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,\u2019&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for&nbsp;I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children.&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;you said, \u2018I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>So he stayed there that night, and from what he had with him he took\u00a0a present for his brother Esau,\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>thirty milking camels and their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>These he handed over to his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, \u201cPass on ahead of me and put a space between drove and drove.\u201d\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>He instructed the first, \u201cWhen Esau my brother meets you and asks you, \u2018To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these ahead of you?\u2019\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>then you shall say, \u2018They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a present sent to my lord Esau. And moreover, he is behind us.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, \u201cYou shall say the same thing to Esau when you find him,\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>and you shall say, \u2018Moreover, your servant Jacob is behind us.\u2019\u201d For he thought, \u201cI may appease him\u00a0with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterward I shall see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.\u201d\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>So the present passed on ahead of him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jacob Wrestles with God<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children,\u00a0and crossed the ford of the\u00a0Jabbok.\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had.\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>And Jacob was left alone. And\u00a0a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.\u00a0<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob&#8217;s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.\u00a0<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>Then he said, \u201cLet me go, for the day has broken.\u201d But Jacob said,\u00a0\u201cI will not let you go unless you bless me.\u201d\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to him, \u201cWhat is your name?\u201d And he said, \u201cJacob.\u201d\u00a0<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>Then he said,\u00a0\u201cYour name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel,\u00a0for\u00a0you have striven with God and\u00a0with men, and have prevailed.\u201d\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jacob asked him, \u201cPlease tell me your name.\u201d But he said,\u00a0\u201cWhy is it that you ask my name?\u201d And there he blessed him.\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel,\u00a0saying, \u201cFor\u00a0I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.\u201d\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>The sun rose upon him as he passed\u00a0Penuel, limping because of his hip.\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob&#8217;s hip on the sinew of the thigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 33<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jacob Meets Esau<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>1\u00a0And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold,\u00a0Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two female servants.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>And he put the servants with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>He himself went on before them,\u00a0bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him\u00a0and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>And when Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, \u201cWho are these with you?\u201d Jacob said,\u00a0\u201cThe children whom God has graciously given your servant.\u201d\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>Then the servants drew near, they and their children, and bowed down.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down. And last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down.\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>Esau said, \u201cWhat do you mean by\u00a0all this company\u00a0that I met?\u201d Jacob answered,\u00a0\u201cTo find favor in the sight of my lord.\u201d\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>But Esau said, \u201cI have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.\u201d\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>Jacob said, \u201cNo, please, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand.\u00a0For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me.\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>Please accept my\u00a0blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.\u201d Thus he\u00a0urged him, and he took it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Then Esau said, \u201cLet us journey on our way, and I will go ahead of\u00a0you.\u201d\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>But Jacob said to him, \u201cMy lord knows that the children are frail, and that the nursing flocks and herds are a care to me. If they are driven hard for one day, all the flocks will die.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>Let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will lead on slowly, at the pace of the livestock that are ahead of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord\u00a0in Seir.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>So Esau said, \u201cLet me leave with you some of the people who are with me.\u201d But he said, \u201cWhat need is there?\u00a0Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.\u201d\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>So Esau returned that day on his way to\u00a0Seir.\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>But Jacob journeyed to\u00a0Succoth, and built himself a house and made booths for his livestock.
