And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.\u00a0<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>But Sarah\u00a0saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham,\u00a0laughing.\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>So she said to Abraham,\u00a0\u201cCast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.\u201d\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son.\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>But God said to Abraham, \u201cBe not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for\u00a0through Isaac shall your offspring be named.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>And I will make\u00a0a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.\u201d\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of\u00a0Beersheba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes.&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, \u201cLet me not look on the death of the child.\u201d And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.&nbsp;<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, \u201cWhat troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>Then&nbsp;God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.&nbsp;<sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wilderness&nbsp;and became an expert with the bow.&nbsp;<sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Treaty with Abimelech<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>At that time&nbsp;Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham,&nbsp;\u201cGod is with you in all that you do.&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants or with my posterity, but&nbsp;as I have dealt kindly with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned.\u201d&nbsp;<sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>And Abraham said, \u201cI will swear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech&#8217;s servants\u00a0had seized,\u00a0<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>Abimelech said, \u201cI do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, and I have not heard of it until today.\u201d\u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men\u00a0made a covenant.\u00a0<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart.\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>And Abimelech said to Abraham, \u201cWhat is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?\u201d\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>He said, \u201cThese seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand, that this\u00a0may be a witness for me that I dug this well.\u201d\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore\u00a0that place was called Beersheba,\u00a0because there both of them swore an oath.\u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>So they made a covenant at Beersheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.\u00a0<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and\u00a0called there on the name of the\u00a0Lord,\u00a0the Everlasting God.\u00a0<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 22<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sacrifice of Isaac<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>1\u00a0After these things\u00a0God tested Abraham and said to him, \u201cAbraham!\u201d And he said, \u201cHere I am.\u201d\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>He said, \u201cTake your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to\u00a0the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.\u201d\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>Then Abraham said to his young men, \u201cStay here with the donkey; I and the boy\u00a0will go over there and worship and come again to you.\u201d\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and\u00a0laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>And Isaac said to his father Abraham, \u201cMy father!\u201d And he said, \u201cHere I am, my son.\u201d He said, \u201cBehold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?\u201d\u00a0<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>Abraham said,\u00a0\u201cGod will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.\u201d So they went both of them together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and\u00a0laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>But the angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0called to him from heaven and said, \u201cAbraham, Abraham!\u201d And he said, \u201cHere I am.\u201d\u00a0<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>He said,\u00a0\u201cDo not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for\u00a0now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.\u201d\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>So Abraham called the name of that place,\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0Lord\u00a0will provide\u201d<sup>]<\/sup>\u00a0as it is said to this day, \u201cOn the mount of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0it shall be provided.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>And the angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0called to Abraham a second time from heaven\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>and said,\u00a0\u201cBy myself I have sworn, declares the\u00a0Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,\u00a0<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring\u00a0as the stars of heaven and\u00a0as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess\u00a0the gate of his\u00a0enemies,\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>and\u00a0in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed,\u00a0because you have obeyed my voice.\u201d\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to\u00a0Beersheba.
